Chinese Calligraphy · Unit 4 · Lesson 15 ·
A brush line swells and thins, and a pencil line stays the same width. So what do the two have in common? Watch a brush and a pencil write the same character side by side in 3D, pull a slider to take the thickness away, find the stroke that is off, and write with both tools on one practice pad. This is the last of the fifteen lessons.
A brush and a pencil make different lines, but they build the same character. Take away the thick and thin of the brush, and what is left is the structure: the same strokes, in the same order, in the same places. We could not find a study that proves brush lessons make pencil writing better, so this lesson does not promise that. What it shows is the part the two tools share.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Drag to turn, and scroll or pinch to zoom. A brush and a pencil write the same character at the same time, along the same path. Watch the stroke counter and the two line widths. Then turn on the brush shadow to lay the brush character under the pencil one, or pick another character.

This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The reading, the cards, the slider, the game, and the practice pad below still work.
A teaching model. Both sheets have the same 25-cm square, far bigger than a real pencil square, so that you can see the lines. The pencil follows the center line of our own brush stroke data, point for point, and its line is drawn 0.3 cm wide at this size. A real pencil line also gets a little darker when you press, which the model does not show. The numbers come from the model, not from measuring anyone's handwriting.

Reading ·
For fourteen lessons you have followed the brush. But on most days you write with a pencil or a pen. Taiwan's curriculum calls this kind of writing 硬筆字, hard-pen writing, because the tip does not bend the way brush hairs do. So here is a fair question for the last lesson: does brush writing help your pencil writing?
Start with what is different. A brush is soft, so its line swells when you press and thins when you lift. A pencil is hard. Its core is a thin rod of graphite mixed with clay, and it leaves a line of almost the same width from beginning to end. In our model, the brush line in 永 changes from 0.3 to 2.5 centimeters wide. The pencil line stays at 0.3.
Now look at what is the same. In the model, a brush and a pencil write 永 at the same moment. Both make five strokes. Both follow the same stroke order. Both travel the same path, and every stroke lands in the same position on the grid. Take the width away from the brush character, and you get the pencil character. It looks like a skeleton.
Writers have a name for this skeleton: structure, or 間架結構 in Chinese. It means where each stroke starts and ends, how long it is, and how the strokes balance one another. Taiwan's curriculum asks students in Grades 3 to 6 to learn this structure and to write correct, neat hard-pen characters. It also says that in those grades hard-pen writing comes first, and the brush is the helper.
So, does the brush help? Here is an honest answer. We could not find a study that proves brush lessons make pencil writing better, so we will not promise that. What we can say is what the model shows: the two tools share stroke order and structure. A brush character is also big. The curriculum suggests squares of 8 to 12 centimeters for large brush characters, and 1.5 to 2 centimeters for hard-pen writing in Grades 1 and 2, so a stroke in the wrong position is easier to see.
Now try it yourself. Pull the slider and watch the thickness disappear. Find the stroke that is off in the game. Then write with both tools on the pad. The curriculum's advice is simple: aim for correct first, then upright, then neat, and beautiful last. It also says not to practice too much. Good writing is a habit, and you can build it with any tool.

In the model, the line in 永 goes from 0.3 to 2.5 cm wide. Press for thick, lift for thin.
The tip is hard, so the line keeps almost the same width. All that is left to decide is where the line goes.
Lay the brush character under the pencil one. Every pencil stroke runs down the middle of a brush stroke.
Both tools write 永 in five strokes, in the same order. You learned why order matters in Lesson 4.

Try It · 動手試
Here is a character written with a brush. Pull the slider to the left and its thick parts shrink until every line is as thin as a pencil line. Watch the three numbers: only one of them changes.
Game ·
On the left is a model written with a brush. On the right, someone copied it in pencil, but one stroke is too short, too long, leaning, or in the wrong place. Tap that stroke. The nine-square grid is there to help you compare.

Practice Pad · 練字板
Trace the pale red model, first with the pencil and then with the brush. With the pencil, the line is the same width however you move, so all your attention can go to position. You can also change the grid: a 田 grid, a nine-square grid, or a 米 grid.

Pencils and Taiwan ·
Two things about the pencil from an encyclopedia and a pencil maker, and two about writing from Taiwan's own documents.
The “Lead” ·
An encyclopedia explains that a pencil is a thin rod of graphite, often called the “lead,” though it contains none of that metal. Modern pencils still use a mixture of graphite and clay. Taiwan's Ministry of Education dictionary says the same: a core made of graphite powder and clay.
H and B · H 和 B
One pencil maker explains the letters this way: H is for hard and B is for black, so HB means hard black, a medium-soft grade that the maker calls ideal for writing. The more clay in the core, the harder the pencil. The more graphite, the softer and blacker the line.
Taiwan's Classrooms ·
Taiwan's Mandarin curriculum says Grades 1 and 2 practice hard-pen writing, and Grades 3 to 6 also learn the brush. Its teaching notes describe four steps for both tools: tracing over a red model, copying from a model beside you, writing on your own, and using your writing in real life.
The National Contest ·
In the writing event of Taiwan's National Language Competition, every group writes regular script with a traditional brush: 50 characters in 50 minutes. Students write characters 7 centimeters square. Half of the score is for brushwork. The other half is for structure and layout.
