A brush's tip is soft: press down for a thick line, lift up for a thin one. Control the pressure of a 3D brush yourself, compare the center tip with the side tip, slow down every part of 十 (ten), and see how your own press-and-lift curve compares.
The biggest difference between a brush and a ballpoint pen is the soft tip. Press down, and the hairs spread for a thick line; lift up, and they gather for a thin one. The beauty of calligraphy lives in the rhythm of pressing and lifting, and it starts with holding the brush upright.

Drag to turn, and scroll or pinch to zoom. In Press and lift, the brush crosses the paper row by row while you decide how hard it presses: drag the slider, or choose a pattern. In Center or side tip, the same line is written two ways. In Writing 十, slow down the start, the middle, and the finish of each stroke. Change the view with Side, Top, or Tip.

A teaching model. Sizes are roughly real: the brush is about 26 centimeters long, and the grid is 26 centimeters wide, so one thousandth of the grid is 0.26 millimeters; line widths use the same rule as the practice pad. In the side tip, the handle leans about 24 degrees and the ink is drawn hair by hair; real dry-brush streaks depend on the ink, the paper, and the speed. The strokes of 十 are hand-drawn as centerlines with a pressure for every point.

Reading ·
Draw a line with a ballpoint pen, and it is the same width from beginning to end. Draw a line with a brush, and it can be as thin as a hair in one place and as wide as your finger in another. The secret is the soft tip. When you press the brush down, the hairs spread out, and the line gets thicker. When you lift it up, the hairs come back together, and the line gets thinner.
Calligraphers call these two movements pressing and lifting. A good line is not pressed the same way from end to end. In a horizontal stroke, the brush presses down at the start, moves a little lighter through the middle, and presses again near the end. This rhythm of pressing and lifting gives a stroke its life, a bit like the beat in a piece of music.
Every stroke has three parts: the start, the middle, and the finish. In regular script, the tip often starts by moving a little in the opposite direction, so that it is hidden inside the stroke. This is called hiding the tip. At the end, the brush can turn back on itself, or it can lift slowly until the line ends in a fine point, like a needle hanging down.
Watch where the tip goes. When the handle stays upright, the tip runs along the middle of the line. This is called the center tip, and it makes lines that look round and full. When the handle leans, the tip slides along one edge, and the line turns flat, with one sharp side and one rough side. This is the side tip.
To keep the tip in the middle, hold the brush upright. A traditional grip, often traced to Lu Xisheng of the Tang dynasty, gives each of the five fingers a job. The thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger hold the handle from both sides, the ring finger pushes back from behind, and the little finger supports the ring finger. Keep your fingers firm but your palm hollow, as if you were holding an egg.
Speed matters, too. When the brush moves slowly, more ink soaks into the paper and the line grows thicker. When it moves quickly, the line becomes thinner and drier. In this lesson, slow down the 3D brush to watch pressing and lifting up close. Then write 十 (ten) on the practice pad: first the horizontal stroke, then the vertical one. The pad will compare your press-and-lift curve with the brush's.

A traditional grip gives each finger one job and names it with one character. It is often traced to Lu Xisheng of the Tang dynasty and is known as the five-character method.
Presses the handle from the inside, tilted slightly upward.
Presses from the outside, so the thumb and index finger hold the handle between them.
Curls like a hook around the outside and pulls inward.
Pushes back from the inside with the edge of the nail, balancing the middle finger.

Sayings About the Brush ·
Four sayings about writing with a brush, and the stories behind them.
A Story ·
The Old Book of Tang records that Emperor Muzong once asked the calligrapher Liu Gongquan how to use the brush perfectly. Liu answered, “Using the brush depends on the heart. When the heart is upright, the brush is upright.” The emperor's face changed: he understood that Liu was giving him advice through calligraphy. Today 心正筆正 also means that an honest heart leads to honest actions.
Iron and Silver ·
The Tang calligrapher Ouyang Xun wrote in his essay On Using the Brush that good strokes are “firm like iron strokes, graceful like silver hooks.” A children's classic, Youxue Qionglin, later used the words for Wang Xizhi's writing. Today 鐵畫銀鉤 praises calligraphy that is both strong and beautiful.
Strength · 力道
The saying comes from Yan Zhenqing's notes on the brush methods he learned from Zhang Xu: when the writing is strong, its force seems to reach right through to the back of the paper. Today 力透紙背 praises powerful calligraphy, and also writing whose ideas are deep and strong. Strength here means control, not crushing the brush.
Movement · 動感
The Song poet Shi Xiaoyou praised a friend with the line “筆走龍蛇” in one of his ci poems: the brush moves as freely as dragons and snakes. Today it describes writing or calligraphy that flows freely and skillfully. You will see this kind of movement in running and cursive script later in this series.
Myth vs. Fact ·
✗ Myth · 迷思Thick lines need a thick brush.
One brush can make both. Press it down and the hairs spread; lift it and they gather. In this lesson's model, the same brush makes lines from under 2 millimeters to about 3 centimeters wide.
✗ Myth · 迷思Pressing harder makes stronger calligraphy.
Strength comes from control: pressing and lifting at the right moments. Crushing the brush squashes the hairs, makes blobs, and can split the tip.
You hold a brush the same way as a pencil.
A brush is held upright, often with all five fingers, and the palm stays hollow. A pencil-style grip tilts the handle, so the tip slides to one side and the line turns flat.
A stroke is just a line from one end to the other.
Every stroke has a start, a middle, and a finish. The tip can hide at the start, run in the middle, and turn back or lift to a point at the end.
