Why Do People Copy Sutras by Hand?

Before printing, every book was copied by hand, and Buddhist texts called sutras were copied with special care. People still copy them today, slowly, one character in each square. Watch a brush copy a line of the Heart Sutra in 3D, compare slow writing with hurried writing, find the right square, and copy five characters yourself.

Big idea ·

To copy a sutra is to write out a Buddhist text by hand, slowly and carefully, one character in each square, from top to bottom and from right to left. Long ago this was how books were made. Today many people still do it, as a way to show respect and to practice paying attention.

A teaching model. The eight characters are one line of the Heart Sutra in the translation of Xuanzang; the whole text has 260 characters. The characters are our own brush strokes in regular script, with the stroke order of Taiwan's Ministry of Education. The brush is drawn much larger than the small brush used for real sutra copying, and real squares are only a centimeter or two wide. “In a hurry” is our own sketch of what rushing does, and the evenness score only measures how much each character's size, place, and tilt differ from the even page. The minutes are worked out from the model's speed; real people write at many different speeds.

Model, stroke data, and the writing engine are drawn and programmed by My Culture Connect. The line 色即是空,空即是色 is from the Heart Sutra, T08 no. 251, CBETA.

Unit 13: Why Do People Copy Sutras by Hand?

Imagine a world with no printers and no copy machines. If you wanted a book, someone had to write out every word by hand. For hundreds of years, that is how the Buddhist texts called sutras were passed on. Trained copyists wrote them on long rolls of paper with ruled columns, one small, neat character after another.

Even after printing was invented, people went on copying sutras by hand, and many still do. The sutras themselves speak of writing them out as a good thing to do. For the people who copy, it is a way to show respect for the words, and a way to practice paying attention.

The rules are simple. Sit up straight. Write one character in each square. Start at the top of the column on the right, write down to the bottom, and then move one column to the left. Do not hurry. Try to make every character the same size, in the middle of its square.

The most copied text is probably the Heart Sutra. It is very short: the translation by the Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang has only 260 characters. Its best-known line has eight characters: 色即是空,空即是色, “form is emptiness, emptiness is form.” People have thought about that line for more than a thousand years. In this lesson, we simply write it.

One famous copyist was Master Hongyi. Before he became a monk in 1918, he was an art and music teacher named Li Shutong. As a monk he gave up most of his arts, but he kept on writing sutras and short sayings to give to people. He said that what his writing shows is calm and quiet.

You do not have to be Buddhist to try the method. Monks in old Europe copied books by hand too, and so did scribes in many other traditions. Copying any text you care about, slowly and neatly, is good practice for the hand and for the mind.

Before Printing ·

A job called “sutra copyist”

A study from National Taiwan University explains that before printing was invented, old books all depended on clerks and copyists, and that Buddhist sutra copyists in the Northern Wei period were called jingsheng. The Diamond Sutra itself praises “writing out, keeping, reading, and reciting” the text.

Dunhuang ·

A cave full of hand-copied scrolls

The dictionary records that a stone chamber at Dunhuang, on the old Silk Road, was found in 1900. Inside were a great many Buddhist texts hand-copied from the Six Dynasties to the Five Dynasties. Many were taken abroad. Taiwan's National Central Library keeps 142 Dunhuang items today.

A Monk ·

From Li Shutong to Master Hongyi

Li Shutong (1880–1942) taught art and music. In 1918 he became a monk at Hupao Temple in Hangzhou and took the name Hongyi. The record of his life kept by a society in Taiwan lists sutra after sutra that he copied, and says that in his last year he was still writing for students. His last four characters were 悲欣交集, “sorrow and joy together.”

Taiwan · 台灣

Sutras in the museum, and rooms for copying

The National Palace Museum keeps a hand-copied scroll labeled “sutra scroll by a Tang copyist”; the museum notes its seventeen characters to a column, the same layout as Dunhuang sutras. Some temples in Taiwan have quiet rooms for copying. One describes the practice as writing out a sutra with the most respectful heart: sit quietly first, and then copy with a calm mind.

Myth vs. Fact ·

Four things people get wrong

Copying a sutra is a handwriting contest: the prettiest page wins.

The point is care and attention, not beauty. Neat, even, and complete matters more than fancy.

A sutra page is written from left to right, like this sentence.

It is written in columns, from top to bottom, and the columns go from right to left.

The Heart Sutra is a very long book.〈心經〉是一部很長的書。

✓ Fact · 事實It is one of the shortest sutras. We counted the main text in Xuanzang's translation: 260 characters. The dictionary says it has “only a few hundred characters.”

Only Buddhists copied holy books by hand.

Many traditions did. Monks in medieval Europe copied books in a writing room called a scriptorium, Jewish scribes write Torah scrolls with a quill on parchment, and for most of Islamic history the Qur'an was kept in manuscript.

Before you pick up a brush

  • Ink stains clothes and is very hard to wash out. Wear old clothes or an apron, and roll up your sleeves.
  • Cover the desk with old newspaper, and keep the ink in a heavy, steady dish so it will not tip over.
  • Press gently. Crushing the brush against the paper squashes the hairs and can split or break them.
  • Do not put the brush, the ink, or the ink stick in your mouth, and do not lick the brush tip to shape it.
  • After writing, wash the brush in clean water until the water runs clear, gently shape it into a point, and hang it tip-down or lay it flat to dry. Wash your hands, too.

Classroom Activity 1 ·

Five Quiet Minutes

You need ·

  • Squared paper (squares of about 1.5 cm) and a pencil or a fine brush pen
  • A short text: this lesson's eight characters, or a line the class chooses
  • A timer計時器

Steps · 步驟

  1. Sit up straight, feet on the floor. Take three slow breaths.
  2. For five minutes, copy the text without talking: one character in each square, starting at the top right.
  3. When the timer rings, stop, even in the middle of a line.
  4. Look at your page. Are the first character and the last character the same size? How did the five minutes feel?

Any respectful text works: a poem, a class promise, or a favorite sentence. Students should feel free to choose.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

Two Speeds, One Line

You need ·

  • Two sheets of squared paper for each student
  • A stopwatch碼表

Steps · 步驟

  1. Copy the eight characters as fast as you can. Write down your time.
  2. Copy them again, taking at least three times as long.
  3. Put the two pages side by side. Circle any character that left the middle of its square.
  4. Talk about it: when is fast writing useful, and when is slow writing better?

Lesson 7 showed that fast scripts have their uses too. Slow is right for this job, not for every job.
