Brush, ink, paper, and inkstone: turn a scholar's desk in 3D, grind ink, drop it on two kinds of paper, and watch a brush write 一 (one) in slow motion. Then write it yourself.
Chinese calligraphy needs only four tools: a brush, ink, paper, and an inkstone. Each one has its secrets: brush hair can be soft or springy, ink is made from soot, Xuan paper drinks in ink, and the inkstone is where you grind the ink.

A teaching model. Sizes are roughly real: the brush is about 26 centimeters long, and the grid on the paper is 26 centimeters wide. How far ink spreads, how fast the water turns black, and how much each kind of hair bends are illustrations, not measurements. The stroke 一 is hand-drawn as a centerline with a pressure for every point.

Reading ·
Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing. In Chinese calligraphy, people write characters with a soft brush and black ink, and they need only four tools: a brush, an ink stick, paper, and an inkstone. Together these are called the Four Treasures of the Study, because for centuries they sat on the desk in a scholar's study. People have written with brushes for a very long time. The oldest brush ever found came from a tomb near Changsha and is more than 2,200 years old.
The brush is a bundle of animal hair tied into a point and fixed to a bamboo handle. Soft white goat hair holds a lot of ink and makes round, gentle lines. Springy brown hair from the tail of a weasel makes sharp, strong lines. In Chinese it is called “wolf hair,” but it usually comes from a weasel. Many brushes mix the two kinds. A good brush has four virtues: its tip is sharp, its hairs are even, its body is round, and it springs back after you press it.
An ink stick looks like a small black bar, but it is made from soot. Makers burn pine wood or oil, collect the fine black soot, mix it with glue, and press it into molds to dry. To make liquid ink, you put a few drops of water on the inkstone and rub the stick in slow circles. Bit by bit, the soot comes off, and the water turns black. Grinding takes time, so many people today use bottled ink, but grinding is also a calm way to get ready to write.
Calligraphers often write on Xuan paper, which is named after Xuanzhou in Anhui Province, China. It is made by hand from the bark of the blue sandalwood tree and rice straw. Raw Xuan paper drinks in water, so a drop of ink spreads out with soft edges, and the paper shows every move of the brush. Copy paper is different. It is sized, or coated, so the water cannot soak in, and the ink sits on top. In Taiwan, the town of Puli has made handmade paper since the Japanese era.
The inkstone is a flat piece of fine, hard stone. Its surface is smooth but a little rough, just enough to grind the ink stick quickly. The flat part where you grind is called the hill, and the deep part at one end is called the sea, where the finished ink collects. Some of the most famous inkstones are Duan inkstones, carved from purple stone near Zhaoqing in Guangdong Province, an area that was called Duanzhou in the Tang dynasty.
Calligraphy is not only for experts or for grandparents. In Taiwan, students begin writing with a brush in third or fourth grade, and many people write spring couplets for the Lunar New Year. You do not even need ink to start: a brush dipped in clean water can practice on old newspaper or on a water-writing cloth, where the marks fade as they dry. In this lesson, first watch the 3D brush write the character 一 (one) in slow motion. Then try writing it yourself on the practice pad.

Four Places ·
The best-known treasures are named after the places that made them famous. Hu brushes come from Huzhou in Zhejiang, where the town of Shanlian still makes them by hand. Hui ink comes from old Huizhou in Anhui, and She County still makes it. Xuan paper is named after Xuanzhou in Anhui and is made in Jing County; in 2009 the craft was added to UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Duan inkstones are carved near Zhaoqing in Guangdong, which was called Duanzhou in the Tang dynasty.
The Name ·
Wenfang (文房) means a scholar's study, the room for reading and writing. In the late 900s, Su Yijian, an official of the Song dynasty, wrote a whole book about the four tools, the Wenfang Sipu (Four Records of the Study): two parts on brushes, and one part each on inkstones, ink, and paper. Another Song writer, Ye Mengde, wrote down a saying of his time: “Shezhou has the Four Treasures of the Study,” meaning brush, ink, paper, and inkstone. In 1121, Shezhou was renamed Huizhou, the home of Hui ink.
Made in Taiwan ·
Puli, near the geographic center of Taiwan, is known for its clean water, and papermakers need clean water. Handmade papermaking skills from Japan and China came to Puli during the Japanese era, and after World War II, through the 1960s and 1970s, Puli's handmade paper enjoyed a short export boom. From the 1980s the industry shrank, as many mills closed or moved to mainland China or Southeast Asia, and after the 1999 earthquake even fewer remained. Some of the mills still working now welcome visitors, who can watch paper being made and try making a sheet themselves.
A Saying ·
An old story says that Wang Xizhi, the great calligrapher of the Eastern Jin dynasty, once wrote on a wooden board for a ceremony. Later, when workers shaved the board to write on it again, they found his ink had soaked three fen deep into the wood (a fen is a small old unit of length). Today 入木三分 describes powerful brushwork, and also a comment or description that goes deep and gets right to the point.
Myth vs. Fact ·
You need bottled ink to write calligraphy.
For centuries, ink was ground fresh from an ink stick on an inkstone. Bottled ink is a modern shortcut that many classes use, and beginners can even practice with plain water on newspaper or a water-writing cloth.
Xuan paper is just ordinary white paper.
Xuan paper is made by hand from tree bark and rice straw. Raw Xuan paper is not sized, so it drinks in water and makes ink spread; copy paper is sized and smooth, so ink sits on top. The English name “rice paper” is misleading, too: the fibers come from bark and straw, not from rice grains.
The softer the brush, the easier it is to write.
Soft goat hair holds lots of ink, but it bends a lot and springs back slowly, so it is hard to control. Springier weasel-hair or mixed-hair brushes are often easier for beginners.
Only old people write calligraphy.
In Taiwan, students start writing with a brush in third or fourth grade as part of their Chinese lessons, and people of all ages write spring couplets for the Lunar New Year.
Four tools on one desk: the Four Treasures of the Study.
A good brush comes to a point, lines up evenly, stays round, and springs back.
A few drops of water, small circles, and patience make dark ink.
On raw Xuan paper, ink spreads; on sized paper, it stays put.

Water writing is clean and cheap, and you can repeat it as many times as you like, so it works well for a whole class. Newspaper soaks up water a bit like raw Xuan paper, so it also shows how ink would spread.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
An old saying goes: grind ink as gently as a sick man, and hold the brush as firmly as a strong man. Pressing hard makes rough, gritty ink. After grinding, wipe the ink stick dry so it does not stick to the stone or crack.
