Chinese Calligraphy 書法

A brush, a stick of ink, a sheet of paper, and a stone. People have written with brush and ink for more than two thousand years and turned writing into an art. Watch a brush write in slow motion, then try it yourself.
一枝筆、一塊墨、一張紙、一方硯。人們用筆墨寫字已經兩千多年,把寫字變成了藝術。先看毛筆慢動作怎麼寫,再自己動手試試。

Every lesson starts with a question about the brush, the characters, or the people who wrote them. A 3D brush writes on Xuan paper in slow motion, one idea at a time, and an English reading explains it, with Chinese a tap away.
每一課都從一個問題開始:關於毛筆、關於字、或是寫字的人。一枝 3D 毛筆在宣紙上用慢動作寫字,一課只講清楚一件事;再讀一篇英文短文把它說明白,中文翻譯隨點隨看。

At the bottom of every lesson is a practice pad. Write with a mouse, a finger, or a stylus: write slowly for a thick line and quickly for a thin one, just like a real brush. Stroke order follows Taiwan's Ministry of Education standard, and every date, name, and place has been checked against the sources listed on each page.
每一課下方都有練字板:用滑鼠、手指或觸控筆寫,寫得慢線就粗、寫得快線就細,跟真的毛筆一樣。筆順照教育部的標準;每一個年代、人名、地名都查證過,出處列在每一頁最下方。

15 of 15 lessons are ready so far; more are on the way.
目前完成 15 課(共規劃 15 課),持續增加中。

書桌上的四樣工具、軟軟的毛筆怎麼寫出粗細、八種基本筆畫,以及筆順為什麼有先後。

Lesson 1 · 第一課入門 · Beginner

What Are the Four Treasures of the Study?

文房四寶是什麼?Brush, ink, paper, and inkstone: turn a scholar's desk in 3D, grind ink, drop it on two kinds of paper, and watch a brush write 一 (one) in slow motion. Then write it yourself.筆、墨、紙、硯:在 3D 裡轉著看讀書人的書桌,磨墨、把墨滴在兩種紙上,再看毛筆慢動作寫出「一」。最後自己寫寫看。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

How Does a Brush Make Thick and Thin Lines?

一枝毛筆怎麼寫出粗細?A brush's tip is soft: press down for a thick line, lift up for a thin one. Control the pressure of a 3D brush yourself, compare the center tip with the side tip, slow down every part of 十 (ten), and see how your own press-and-lift curve compares.毛筆的筆鋒是軟的:往下按線就粗,往上提線就細。自己控制 3D 毛筆壓多重、比較中鋒和側鋒、把「十」的每一段放慢看,再看看你的提按曲線像不像示範。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →
Lesson 3 · 第三課入門 · Beginner

Can One Character Teach You Every Stroke?

永字八法:一個字學會所有筆畫?The character 永 (forever) has only five strokes, but inside them are the eight basic movements of regular script. Watch a 3D brush write 永, replay each of the eight principles in slow motion, then write it yourself in the right order.「永」只有五畫,裡面卻藏著楷書最基本的八種運筆。看 3D 毛筆寫「永」,把八法一法一法放慢重播,再照筆順自己寫一次。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →
Lesson 4 · 第四課入門 · Beginner

Why Do We Write Strokes in Order?

筆順與結構:為什麼要先橫後豎?Left to right, top to bottom, horizontal before vertical: Taiwan's Ministry of Education sums up stroke order in 17 basic rules. Watch a 3D brush follow six of them, play Guess the Next Stroke, and practice the six example characters.先左後右、先上後下、先橫後豎:教育部把筆順歸納成 17 條基本法則。看 3D 毛筆示範其中 6 條,玩「猜下一筆」,再練寫六個例字。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

How Chinese Writing Changed 字體的演變

From marks on tortoise shells to the neat lines of seal script, the silkworm heads and swallow tails of clerical script, and the speed of running and cursive script.
從龜甲上的刻痕到線條勻稱的篆書、蠶頭燕尾的隸書,再到越寫越快的行書與草書。

Lesson 5 · 第五課入門 · Beginner

Where Did Chinese Characters Come From?

漢字從哪裡來?甲骨文到篆書Long before paper, people carved characters on tortoise shells and cast them in bronze. In 3D, crack a shell the way Shang diviners did, carve a character, make a rubbing from a bronze ding, and watch a brush write small seal script. Then pull a slider through 3,000 years.在有紙以前,人們把字刻在龜甲上、鑄在青銅器上。在 3D 裡照商代占卜的方法讓龜甲裂開、刻一個字,從青銅鼎拓下銘文,再看毛筆寫小篆;最後拉一根滑桿,走過三千年。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →
Lesson 6 · 第六課入門 · Beginner

Why Does Clerical Script Have Silkworm Heads and Swallow Tails?

隸書:為什麼是蠶頭燕尾?Clerical script made writing quicker: curves became straight lines, tall shapes became flat, and one stroke in each character got a head like a silkworm's and a tail like a swallow's. Watch a 3D brush write that stroke part by part, see seal script turn into clerical script, and unroll a scroll of bamboo slips.隸書讓寫字變快了:彎彎的線變直、長長的字形變扁,每個字有一筆起筆像蠶頭、收筆像燕尾。看 3D 毛筆一段一段寫出這一筆,看小篆變成隸書,再攤開一卷竹簡。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

Regular, Running, Cursive: How Fast Can You Write?

楷書、行書、草書:同一個字,三種速度One character, three ways to write it. In regular script every stroke stands alone. In running script the strokes join. In cursive script they melt into one flowing line. Watch three brushes race in 3D, name five scripts in a game, and time your own writing on the practice pad.同一個字,三種寫法:楷書一筆一畫分開,行書把筆畫連起來,草書連成一條流動的線。看三枝毛筆在 3D 裡比賽,玩五種字體的認字遊戲,再用練字板的碼表量量自己寫多快。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

Lesson 8 · 第八課入門 · Beginner

Why Is Wang Xizhi Called the Sage of Calligraphy?

書聖王羲之:蘭亭序的故事One spring day in 353, Wang Xizhi and his friends floated wine cups down a winding stream and wrote poems. Then he wrote a preface that became the most famous piece of running script. Float a cup in 3D, watch the brush write 之 four different ways, and find all twenty in a real copy of the scroll.西元 353 年的一個春天,王羲之和朋友們在彎彎的小溪上漂酒杯、作詩;他接著寫下一篇序,成了最有名的行書。在 3D 裡放一只酒杯,看毛筆把「之」寫成四種樣子,再到摹本裡找出全部二十個「之」。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

Strong Muscle, Hard Bone: Why Does Every Calligrapher's Writing Look Different?

顏筋柳骨:為什麼每個書法家的字都不一樣?Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan both wrote regular script in the Tang dynasty, yet you can tell them apart at a glance. Watch two brushes write the same character side by side in 3D, compare their press-and-lift curves, guess who wrote each character on real stone rubbings, and find out whose lines yours are closer to.顏真卿和柳公權都是唐朝人,寫的都是楷書,可是一眼就分得出來。在 3D 裡看兩枝毛筆並排寫同一個字、比一比提按曲線,到真的拓本上猜猜每個字是誰寫的,再看看你的線條比較像誰。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

過年貼在門上的紅紙、作品上小小的紅色印章、一筆一畫地抄寫,以及毛筆字和其他書寫的關係。

Lesson 11 · 第十一課入門 · Beginner

How Do You Write Spring Couplets?

怎麼寫春聯?Before the Lunar New Year, red paper goes up beside the door: two matching lines, a short line above, and a diamond with 春 or 福. Watch the brush write 春 and 福 in 3D, decide which line goes on which side of the door, play the upper-line game, and trace the two characters yourself.農曆新年前,門邊會貼上紅紙:兩句相對的句子、上面一條短的橫批,還有寫著「春」或「福」的菱形紅紙。在 3D 裡看毛筆寫「春」和「福」,決定哪一句貼在門的哪一邊,玩「哪一句是上聯?」,再自己描寫這兩個字。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

What Are the Red Seals on a Work of Calligraphy?

印章與篆刻:作品上的紅色印章是什麼?A finished work of calligraphy is black and white, with a few small squares of red. They are seals. Watch a seal show its face, dip into red paste, and print in 3D; find out why the face must be carved backward; tell red-character seals from white-character seals; and design a seal of your own.一件寫好的書法作品是黑白的,上面有幾個小小的紅色方塊——那是印章。在 3D 裡看印章把印面翻給你看、蘸印泥、蓋在紙上;弄懂印面為什麼要反著刻;分辨朱文和白文;再設計一方自己的印。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

Why Do People Copy Sutras by Hand?

抄經:書法與修行Before printing, every book was copied by hand, and Buddhist texts called sutras were copied with special care. People still copy them today, slowly, one character in each square. Watch a brush copy a line of the Heart Sutra in 3D, compare slow writing with hurried writing, find the right square, and copy five characters yourself.還沒有印刷術的時候,每一本書都是用手抄的;佛教的經典抄得特別用心。直到今天還有很多人抄經:慢慢地,一格一個字。在 3D 裡看毛筆抄〈心經〉的一句,比較「慢而勻」和「趕著寫」,找出下一個字該寫的格子,再自己抄五個字。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

How Is Chinese Calligraphy Different from Western Calligraphy?

中文書法和西洋書法有什麼不同?Chinese and Western calligraphy are both beautiful writing, but the tools are different, and the tools shape the lines. Watch a soft brush and a stiff broad-edge pen write side by side in 3D, turn the nib and see the thick strokes move, guess which tool made each stroke, and try both on two practice pads.中文書法和西洋書法都是把字寫得美,可是工具不一樣,而工具會決定線條的樣子。在 3D 裡看軟軟的毛筆和硬硬的平頭筆並排寫字,轉一轉筆嘴、看粗的筆畫跑到哪裡去,猜猜每一筆是哪一種筆寫的,再到兩個練字板上各試一次。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →

Does Brush Writing Help Your Pencil Writing?

毛筆字和硬筆字A brush line swells and thins, and a pencil line stays the same width. So what do the two have in common? Watch a brush and a pencil write the same character side by side in 3D, pull a slider to take the thickness away, find the stroke that is off, and write with both tools on one practice pad. This is the last of the fifteen lessons.毛筆的線有粗有細,鉛筆的線從頭到尾一樣粗。那兩種字有什麼是一樣的?在 3D 裡看毛筆和鉛筆並排寫同一個字,拉動滑桿把粗細拿掉,找出寫歪的那一筆,再用同一個練字板兩種筆都寫寫看。這是十五堂課的最後一課。Start the lesson · 開始上課 →
