Chinese Calligraphy · Unit 3 · Lesson 8 ·
One spring day in 353, Wang Xizhi and his friends floated wine cups down a winding stream and wrote poems. Then he wrote a preface that became the most famous piece of running script. Float a cup in 3D, watch the brush write 之 four different ways, and find all twenty in a real copy of the scroll.
Wang Xizhi lived in the Eastern Jin dynasty, and later generations called him the Sage of Calligraphy. In 353, at a spring gathering beside a winding stream, he wrote the Lanting Xu, the best-known work of running script. Its 324 characters include 之 twenty times, and no two are written the same way. The original is lost; we know it from later copies.

Reading ·
On the third day of the third month in the year 353, Wang Xizhi met his friends at the Orchid Pavilion in Kuaiji, near today's Shaoxing in Zhejiang. It was the day of an old spring custom: people went to the water to wash away bad luck. There were high mountains, tall bamboo, and a clear, fast stream.
The friends sat along a winding stream and played a game. Cups of wine floated down from upstream, and when a cup stopped beside a guest, that guest picked it up and drank. They also wrote poems. An early record says that 26 of them wrote poems that day, and 15 could not and had to drink more wine as a penalty. Wang Xizhi described the day as “one cup, one poem.”
At the end of the day, the poems were gathered into a collection, and Wang Xizhi wrote a preface for it. We call it the Lanting Xu, the Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection. It begins with the happy gathering and ends with deeper thoughts about how quickly life passes.
The preface is written in running script. A Tang dynasty writer, He Yanzhi, counted 28 lines and 324 characters. He noticed that when a character appears more than once, each one has a different shape. The character 之 appears most often, about twenty times, and no two are alike. Count them in the gallery below: there are exactly twenty.
Where is the original today? Nobody has it. Tang dynasty books say that Emperor Taizong loved Wang Xizhi's writing so much that the Lanting Xu was buried with him. What we have are copies made by hand in the Tang dynasty and later. That is why museums call the Lanting Xu “the best running script under heaven” and yet can show only copies.
Later generations called Wang Xizhi the Sage of Calligraphy. In this lesson, float a cup down the stream, watch the brush write 之 four different ways, find the matching 之 in the game, and trace them yourself.

Low and wide. The zigzag slides to the left and ends in a long, heavy line.
The widest of the four, with a sharp turn at the upper right, like the wide world it is describing.

Stories of Wang Xizhi ·
Stories people have told about him for more than a thousand years, and one letter you can see in Taiwan. They are old stories; nobody can check every detail.
Geese · 鵝
The history of the Jin dynasty says a Daoist priest in Shanyin kept fine geese. Wang Xizhi loved them and asked to buy them. The priest said: write out the Daodejing for me, and the whole flock is yours. Wang Xizhi gladly wrote it and carried the geese home in a cage, very pleased.
Fans · 扇子
The same history tells of an old woman selling six-sided bamboo fans. Wang Xizhi wrote five characters on each one. She was upset at first. He told her: just say these were written by Wang Youjun, and ask a hundred coins. She did, and people rushed to buy them.
A Son-in-Law · 女婿
A Tales of the World story: a great official sent a messenger to the Wang family to choose a husband for his daughter. All the young men tried to look their best, except one, who lay on the east bed with his belly bare as if he had heard nothing. “That is the one!” said the official. It was Wang Xizhi. Today 東床 still means a son-in-law.
Taiwan · 台灣
The National Palace Museum in Taipei keeps a short letter of Wang Xizhi's, Timely Clearing After Snowfall: four lines, 28 characters, beginning “Xizhi bows his head. After the quick snow, the sky has cleared.” The museum says it is a fine tracing copy made in the Tang dynasty. The Qianlong Emperor loved it and counted it among his Three Rarities. It is a National Treasure.
Myth vs. Fact ·
Museums show the Lanting Xu that Wang Xizhi wrote himself.
The original is lost. What museums have are copies made by hand in the Tang dynasty and later, and rubbings from stone carvings.
A great calligrapher writes the same character the same way every time.
In the Lanting Xu it is the opposite. He Yanzhi wrote that every repeated character has a different form, and that the twenty or so 之 are all different.〈蘭亭序〉正好相反。
The Lanting Xu is only about a party.〈蘭亭序〉只是在寫一場聚會。
✓ Fact · 事實It begins with the gathering, but then it turns to time, life, and death. You can read the whole essay in our Classical Chinese Prose series.
✗ Myth · 迷思Wang Xizhi invented running script.
Running script was already in use before him. He is remembered because he wrote it so well that later generations took his writing as their model.
