Are People Born Good?
01Water and willow
Around 320 BCE two philosophers argued about human nature in images, and the record of it is the oldest sustained debate on the subject that we have. Gaozi said that human nature is like willow wood, and morality is like the cups and bowls a craftsman carves from it. Goodness is something made out of us. Mencius asked whether the craftsman follows the nature of the willow or does violence to it. If morality is a violence done to human beings, people will have every reason to hate it. Gaozi tried again. Human nature is like water whirling in a pool. Open a channel to the east and it flows east, open one to the west and it flows west. It has no preference between good and bad.
Mencius accepted the image and turned it. “Water indeed has no preference between east and west. But has it no preference between up and down? Human nature is good as water flows downward. There is no person who is not good, and there is no water that does not flow down.” You can splash water over your head by striking it, and you can force it up a hill by damming it, but that is what circumstance does to it. When people are made to do wrong, something similar has been done to their nature.
02The four sprouts 四端
Mencius did not mean that people are born virtuous. His claim was about tendencies. Anyone who suddenly sees a child about to fall into a well, he says, feels alarm and compassion, and feels it before any thought of gain or reputation. That feeling is a sprout. There are four of them, compassion, shame, deference, and the sense of right and wrong, and from them grow humaneness, rightness, propriety, and wisdom. “These are not welded onto me from outside. I have them from the start.” A sprout can be tended or trampled. His most famous image is Ox Mountain, which was once covered in trees. It stood near a great city, and axes cut it down. The stumps put out new shoots with the night air and the rain, and cattle and sheep grazed them off. People who see it bare suppose that it never had timber. “But is that the nature of the mountain?”
03Crooked timber 枸木
Two generations later Xunzi, the most systematic of the early Confucians, wrote a chapter that opens: “Human nature is bad. Its goodness is the product of deliberate effort.” People are born fond of profit, he observes, and if they follow that fondness there will be strife and no yielding. They are born with envy and hatred, and with desires of the ear and eye. To follow nature is to end in violence. “Crooked wood must be steamed and bent before it is straight, and dull metal must be ground before it is sharp.” Goodness comes from teachers, models, and ritual, which the sages invented because they saw what people are like without them. Xunzi was no pessimist about the result. He agreed with Mencius that the man in the street can become a sage. He located the capacity in intelligence and effort, where Mencius had located it in feeling. The practical difference is large. For Mencius education is gardening, and for Xunzi it is carpentry.
04The same quarrel in Europe
Europe had the argument nineteen centuries later, and its two great voices line up with the Chinese ones closely. Thomas Hobbes, writing during a civil war, asked what life would be like with no government to keep people in awe. His answer is that every man would be the enemy of every other, and there would be “no Arts; no Letters; no Society; and which is worst of all, continuall feare, and danger of violent death; And the life of man, solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short.” People are not wicked on his account. They are roughly equal, they want the same scarce things, and none can trust the rest. Order has to be imposed.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau replied in 1755 that Hobbes had described people as society has made them and mistaken the portrait for nature. Natural man, he argued, is solitary, healthy, and peaceable, with two instincts, a care for his own survival and a pity that makes him unwilling to see another creature suffer. Corruption begins with property. “The first man, who, after enclosing a piece of ground, took it into his head to say, ‘This is mine,’ and found people simple enough to believe him, was the true founder of civil society,” and of all the crimes and wars that followed. His book on education opens with the sentence: “God makes all things good; man meddles with them and they become evil.” Ox Mountain could not be put more briefly.
05Babies in the laboratory
For most of history the question could be argued only from anecdote. In the last few decades psychologists have found ways to put it to infants, who have had little time to be taught. In experiments at Yale published in 2007, babies of six and ten months watched a puppet show in which one figure helped another up a hill and a third pushed it down. Offered the two afterward, most reached for the helper. In studies at Leipzig, toddlers of eighteen months who saw a stranger drop something and reach for it went and picked it up for him, unasked and unrewarded. These findings are Mencius’s child at the well, observed under controlled conditions.
The same researchers have found the other side. Infants prefer those who resemble them, and they like to see a puppet who chose a different food from theirs treated badly. Small children help freely and share grudgingly. And adults are easily led. In Stanley Milgram’s experiments of the 1960s about two-thirds of ordinary volunteers, told to do so by a man in a gray coat, went on pressing switches that they believed were giving severe electric shocks to a stranger. The prison experiment run at Stanford in 1971 is cited for the same lesson, though later study of the records has shown that the guards were coached, and it is now treated with caution.
06What the evidence settles
The picture that emerges gives each ancient party something. Mencius was right that the beginnings of sympathy and of a sense of fairness are present before instruction, and Gaozi’s blank water is the view that has fared worst. Xunzi was right that we are also born with partiality, appetite, and readiness to follow, and that the first moral impulses are narrow: they extend to the helper, the kin, and the familiar face, and it takes training to carry them further. Both were right that everything depends on what is done next. They disagreed about which part of our equipment to call “nature,” and that is partly a dispute about a word. Mencius meant by nature what is distinctive of human beings and grows under good conditions. Xunzi meant what is present at birth without effort.
Something real is left when the word is set aside, and it is the choice between the gardener and the carpenter. A parent or a state that believes people are shoots to be tended will rely on example, trust, and room to grow. One that believes people are crooked timber will rely on rules, incentives, and supervision. Each policy tends to produce the evidence that supports it, since people who are trusted often become trustworthy and people who are watched often give cause for watching. That may be the most important fact about human nature: it responds to what is believed about it.

Mencius 6A2; Xunzi, chapter 23, “Human Nature Is Bad” 《孟子・告子上》第二章;《荀子・性惡》 · translated for this series from the Chinese text
Gaozi said, “Human nature is like whirling water. Open a passage for it to the east and it flows east. Open a passage to the west and it flows west. Human nature does not distinguish good from not good, as water does not distinguish east from west.” Mencius said, “Water indeed does not distinguish east from west. Does it not distinguish up from down? The goodness of human nature is like the downward flow of water. There is no person who is not good, and there is no water that does not flow down.”
Mencius wins the exchange by accepting his opponent’s image and finding in it a feature the opponent had overlooked. That is skill in debate. It is fair to ask whether it is an argument. Water’s tendency to run downhill does not show that people tend to be good, and Gaozi could have answered with another image in which the pull was the other way. What the passage does is make a claim clear: nature is a tendency and not a fixed state, and a tendency can be overpowered without being absent.
Human nature is bad. Its goodness is the product of deliberate effort. Now, the nature of man is such that he is born with a fondness for profit. If he follows this, strife and plunder arise and yielding disappears. … Thus crooked wood must await steaming and bending against the frame before it is straight, and dull metal must await grinding and whetting before it is sharp.
The key word is wěi, written with the signs for “person” and “to do.” In later Chinese it means “false,” and readers who took it that way thought Xunzi was calling goodness a sham, which helped ruin his reputation. He means “made by human effort,” as a pot is made. His point is that civilization is an artifact and a precious one. Notice also the shape of the argument. He reasons from what would happen if people followed their inborn desires without restraint, which is exactly how Hobbes reasons about the state of nature.
Both sides ·
Objections and replies
The whole debate is confused. “Good” and “bad” are standards that societies apply. Nature is neither, as a river is neither just nor unjust.
This is Gaozi’s position, and it has a point: the words are evaluations. But the question can be restated without them. Do human beings, before instruction, tend toward the conduct that makes shared life possible, or away from it? That is a question about dispositions, and it has an answer whether or not we attach the words. Infants who prefer helpers are evidence about it.
If people are born good, there is no explaining how evil came into the world. Someone must have been the first to corrupt the rest.
The objection hits Rousseau harder than Mencius. Rousseau must explain how good creatures invented bad institutions, and his story of the first fence is not much of an explanation. Mencius never said that we have good impulses only. He said that we also have a body with appetites, which he called the lesser part, and that a person goes wrong by letting the lesser part lead. His view needs no first corrupter. It needs only neglect.
If people are born bad, the sages who invented morality could not have existed. Where did they get the goodness to see that it was needed?
This was pressed against Xunzi in his own day, and he answers it in the same chapter. The sages did not differ from other people in nature. They differed in the accumulation of thought and effort. A potter is not made of clay, and one need not be good by nature in order to work out, by intelligence, that a life without rules is miserable for everyone. The reply shows what Xunzi really believed in. He trusted human intelligence more than human feeling.

A view from the Dharma
The Buddha makes two statements that seem to belong to opposite camps. “This mind, mendicants, is radiant. But it’s corrupted by visiting corruptions.” The defilements are called visitors. They arrive and can be made to leave, and what they cover is bright. That is close to Ox Mountain. But when a monk suggested that an infant must be free of the fetters, since it has no concepts with which to form a wrong view, the Buddha corrected him. A baby has no notion of sensual pleasure or of other beings, “yet the underlying tendency to sensual desire still lies within them,” and the tendency to ill will too. That is close to Xunzi. The two statements are consistent. Latent tendencies toward greed, hatred, and delusion are present from the start, and none of them belongs to the mind’s nature, since all can be removed.
The Mahāyāna developed the first statement into the teaching of Buddha-nature: every sentient being has within it, covered by defilements, the nature of an awakened one. A companion page asks which Western and Chinese view of human nature this comes closest to, and where the comparison fails.
