Everyone wants to be happy and few can say what they are wanting. The word covers a feeling, a judgment about one’s life, and a way of living, and the three do not always go together.

What Is Happiness?

01The machine

In 1974 the Harvard philosopher Robert Nozick described a device that neuroscientists might one day build. You float in a tank with electrodes attached to your brain, and the machine gives you any experience you like. You could seem to write a great novel, win a friend, or climb a mountain, and it would feel from the inside exactly as the real thing feels. You may choose your experiences in advance from a large library, and once you are in you will not know that you are in. Your body is cared for. Others can plug in too, so there is no one you need stay outside to help. Would you plug in for the rest of your life?

Most people who are asked say no, and Nozick thought their refusal showed something. If all that mattered to us were how our lives feel from the inside, we would have no reason to hesitate. Since we do hesitate, something else must matter. He suggested three things. We want to do certain things, and not merely to have the experience of doing them. We want to be a certain kind of person, and someone floating in a tank is not brave or kind or anything at all. And we want to be in contact with reality, not confined to a world that human beings have made.

02Three theories

The machine sorts the answers that philosophers have given to the question of what makes a life go well for the person who lives it. The first is hedonism: a good life is one with the most pleasure and the least pain, and nothing else counts in itself. It is the simplest view and the one the machine was designed to embarrass, since a hedonist ought to plug in at once. The second is the desire theory: a life goes well to the extent that the person gets what he wants. It explains the refusal neatly. I want to write a novel, and in the tank I would only believe that I had. Its weakness is that people want things that do them no good, and can be pleased by the fulfillment of desires that were planted in them. The third view holds that some things are good for a person whether or not he wants them or enjoys them: knowledge, friendship, achievement, the exercise of his abilities. Philosophers call it the objective list theory, and its weakness is the question of who writes the list.

03The garden 花園

Hedonism has had one great defender who was no friend of luxury. Epicurus taught in a garden outside Athens around 300 BCE, and his name has become a word for fine dining through a misunderstanding he tried to prevent. “When we say, then, that pleasure is the end and aim, we do not mean the pleasures of the prodigal or the pleasures of sensuality, as we are understood to do by some through ignorance, prejudice, or willful misrepresentation. By pleasure we mean the absence of pain in the body and of trouble in the soul.” The pleasant life is produced by “sober reasoning,” which examines every desire and drives out the beliefs that disturb us. He sorted desires into three kinds. Some are natural and necessary, like the desire for food and shelter, and these are easily met. Some are natural and unnecessary, like the desire for fine food. Some are neither, like the desires for fame and power, and these can never be satisfied, since they have no limit. Happiness comes from wanting what is enough.

04Activity, and luck

Aristotle would have refused the machine without hesitation, and his reason is the root of the third theory. Happiness, for him, is something we do. It is “activity of soul in accordance with virtue,” over a complete life, and a person asleep or inactive is no more happy than a harp that is never played is making music. The man in the tank does nothing. Aristotle also saw a consequence that gentler philosophers have tried to avoid. If happiness is a life of excellent activity, it needs equipment: health, some money, friends, a city at peace. A good person who suffers the fate of King Priam, who saw his sons killed and his city burned, cannot be called happy. So happiness is partly a matter of luck, and he discusses the old saying of Solon that we must “see the end” before calling anyone happy.

05The alley and the highest joy

The Chinese tradition has a famous case that tests Aristotle’s claim about equipment. Confucius said of his favorite student: “How admirable Hui is! A bamboo dish of rice, a gourd of water, a mean alley. Others could not bear the misery, and Hui does not let it change his joy.” Later Confucians made a standing question of it: what was it that Yan Hui delighted in? The answer could not be poverty, which no one enjoys. It was something that poverty could not reach, and they took it to be the delight of a person whose desires and whose sense of what is right had become one. This is a happiness that needs little luck.

Zhuangzi goes further and doubts the pursuit itself. He looks at what the world calls happiness, wealth, rank, long life, good food, and at the people rushing after these things “as though they could not stop,” and says that he cannot tell whether their happiness is happiness or not. His own conclusion is a paradox: “The highest happiness is without happiness.” The joy that is sought and held is already anxious. What remains when the seeking stops has no name that the seekers would recognize. Mill discovered the same thing in his breakdown: “Ask yourself whether you are happy, and you cease to be so.”

06What the measurements say

Psychologists now measure happiness by asking large numbers of people how they feel and how satisfied they are with their lives, and several findings bear on the old theories. People adapt. Those who win lotteries and those who suffer serious injuries both return, within a few years, much of the way to where they were, a pattern known as the hedonic treadmill. Epicurus would have expected it. Income raises reported happiness steeply among the poor and less and less above a moderate level. The two measures come apart: a parent of small children often reports less pleasure hour by hour and more satisfaction with life as a whole. And the longest study of adult lives, which has followed a group of Harvard graduates and Boston men since 1938, found that the best predictor of a healthy and contented old age was the quality of a person’s close relationships. No one in the study was in a tank.

The machine remains a good test because it separates what we feel from what is so. A reader who would refuse it has learned that he wants more from life than good feelings. A reader who would accept it holds a view with a long and honorable history. Either way it is worth doing the experiment slowly.

In his own words

One of three letters by Epicurus that survive, preserved by a biographer five centuries later. It is three pages long and contains his whole ethics.

R. D. Hicks (public domain)

Let no one be slow to seek wisdom when he is young nor weary in the search thereof when he is grown old. For no age is too early or too late for the health of the soul. And to say that the season for studying philosophy has not yet come, or that it is past and gone, is like saying that the season for happiness is not yet or that it is now no more.

Letter to Menoeceus (Diogenes Laertius X.122)

The letter opens by identifying philosophy with the pursuit of happiness, which tells us what Epicurus thought philosophy was for. It is medicine. “The health of the soul” is the same image Plato used for justice in the lesson on the ring, and Epicurus draws the practical conclusion: one does not postpone a cure. His school accepted women and slaves, which no other school in Athens did, on the ground that everyone has a soul that can be ill.

When we say, then, that pleasure is the end and aim, we do not mean the pleasures of the prodigal or the pleasures of sensuality, as we are understood to do by some through ignorance, prejudice, or willful misrepresentation. By pleasure we mean the absence of pain in the body and of trouble in the soul. It is not an unbroken succession of drinking-bouts and of merrymaking… which produce a pleasant life; it is sober reasoning, searching out the grounds of every choice and avoidance, and banishing those beliefs through which the greatest disturbances take possession of the soul.

Letter to Menoeceus (Diogenes Laertius X.131–132)

Two Greek words lie behind the definition: aponia, freedom from bodily pain, and ataraxia, freedom from disturbance. Epicurus holds that when these are present nothing can be added, so that pleasure has a ceiling and the ceiling is easily reached. This is what makes his hedonism so unlike the popular kind. It is also where critics attack. Cicero objected that the absence of pain is a neutral state and that calling it the highest pleasure is a trick with words. The reader can test the claim on the experience machine, which offers something far more vivid than tranquility.

Both sides ·

Objections and replies

Objection 1 · 反駁

Happiness is subjective. If a person feels happy, he is happy, and no philosopher can tell him otherwise.

Reply · 回應

This is true of the feeling and less clearly true of the thing we wish for our children. Consider a man whose wife and friends secretly despise him and who never finds out. He feels as happy as a man whose wife and friends love him. Most people judge that the second man’s life is going better, and would choose it for themselves. If so, how a life is going can differ from how it seems to the one living it.

Objection 2 · 反駁

The objective list is arrogance. Who is anyone to say that knowledge or friendship is good for a person who does not want it?

Reply · 回應

The worry is fair, and lists have been used to push people around. But the theory does not say that anything should be forced on anyone. It says that a person can be mistaken about what would be good for him, which everyone accepts about his own past. We all remember wanting things that would have harmed us. The list is a summary of what people who have tried many ways of living tend to report, and it can be revised as the reports come in.

Objection 3 · 反駁

Seeking happiness is selfish. A good person thinks about duty and about others, and lets happiness look after itself.

Reply · 回應

Kant held something like this, and Mill’s crisis taught him that happiness pursued directly escapes. Both points can be granted without giving up the subject. To ask what makes a life go well is necessary for anyone who cares about others, since we cannot benefit them without some idea of what a benefit is. And on the best ancient accounts, Aristotle’s and the Confucian, the happy life is the life of a person who is good to others. The two questions were asked together for most of history.

Dharma and the West ·

A view from the Dharma

The Buddha ranks kinds of happiness in an ascending order, and the order is the reverse of what the machine offers. Lowest is the pleasure of the senses, which is real, brief, and bound up with the fear of losing it. Above it is the happiness of a mind that has given up such pleasures and become collected in meditation, which the texts describe as a joy that drenches the body as water soaks a ball of bath powder. Above that is the peace of a mind that no longer clings. The machine supplies the first kind without limit and cannot supply the others, since they are states of the person and not contents of experience. Epicurus, who placed tranquility above excitement, is the Western philosopher who saw this most clearly.

The tradition then makes a claim that goes beyond him. Sāriputta once declared, “Extinguishment is bliss!” A monk objected: “What’s blissful about it, since nothing is felt?” He answered: “The fact that nothing is felt is precisely what’s blissful about it.” Every feeling, however pleasant, is something that has arisen and will pass, and to depend on it is to be exposed. The Dhammapada puts the ranking in a line: contentment is the greatest wealth, and nibbāna “the ultimate happiness.” Whether a happiness that is not a feeling can be called happiness at all is the point at which Zhuangzi’s paradox, “the highest happiness is without happiness,” and the Buddha’s meet (Dharma and the West, D6 and D22).
