Life · 生平

A life in three scenes

A poor boy who loved the old ways

Confucius was born in 551 BCE in Lu, a small state in what is now Shandong. The Zhou kings, who had ruled for five centuries, still reigned in name, and real power had passed to a dozen states that fought one another and were themselves torn by their great families. His father, an old soldier, died when he was a small child, and he grew up poor. He later summed up his life in six steps: “At fifteen I set my heart on learning. At thirty I stood firm. At forty I had no doubts. At fifty I knew the decree of Heaven. At sixty my ear was attuned. At seventy I could follow what my heart desired without overstepping the line.”

What he set his heart on was the culture of the early Zhou: its rites, its music, its odes and records. He believed that the founders of the dynasty had known how human beings should live together, and that the violence of his own day came from forgetting it. He described himself as “a transmitter and not a maker, one who trusts and loves the ancients.” In his thirties he began to take students, and he seems to have been the first person in China to make a living by teaching. He took anyone who came. “From the man who brought a bundle of dried meat upward,” he said, “I have never refused instruction to anyone.”

Fourteen years on the road

He wanted office, since he held that a good man’s place is in government. Around the age of fifty he was given a post in Lu and rose, tradition says, to be minister of justice. It did not last. Finding that the duke would not listen, he left the state in 497 with a band of students and spent fourteen years traveling from court to court in search of a ruler who would put his ideas into practice. None would. He was threatened, surrounded, and once nearly starved. At the gate of one city he became separated from his students, and a local man told them he had seen a stranger standing there who looked “like a dog from a house in mourning,” with no one to feed him. When this was repeated to Confucius he laughed and said, “That is it exactly.”

The hermits he met on the road thought him a fool. Two of them, plowing a field, told his student that the whole world was a flood and that it would be wiser to follow those who flee the age than one who merely flees one bad ruler after another. Confucius sighed when he heard it. “One cannot flock with birds and beasts. If I do not associate with these people, with whom should I associate? If the Way prevailed in the world, I would not be trying to change it.” A gatekeeper put the general opinion in one line: is that the man who knows it cannot be done and keeps on doing it?

The return 歸來

He came home to Lu in 484, aged sixty-seven, and gave his last years to teaching and to the old texts. Tradition credits him with editing the Odes and the Documents and with composing the chronicle of Lu, and says that he read the Book of Changes so often that the leather thongs binding its bamboo strips wore through three times. His son died before him, and so did Yan Hui, the student he loved best. He died in 479, believing that he had failed. Some of his students mourned at the grave for three years, and one stayed for six.

Four centuries later the historian Sima Qian visited the temple at Qufu, saw the carriage, the robes, and the ritual vessels, and watched the students practicing the rites. He wrote that he lingered and could not bring himself to leave. Kings and worthies beyond number were honored in their day and forgotten at their death. Confucius was a commoner, and after more than ten generations scholars still took him as their master.

The central idea ·

Becoming human through ritual

The word at the center of his teaching is rén, written with the signs for “person” and “two.” It has been translated as benevolence, humaneness, and goodness, and none fits exactly, because it names the whole quality of a person who is as a human being ought to be in relation to others. Asked what it is, he gives a different answer to each student. To one he says, “Love others.” To another he gives the rule he calls reciprocity: “What you do not want for yourself, do not do to others.” To his best student he gives the hardest answer: “To master oneself and return to ritual is rén.” Asked for the details, he adds: do not look at, listen to, say, or do what is contrary to ritual.

The pairing of inner goodness with outward ritual is his distinctive idea. By ritual, lǐ, he means the whole body of inherited forms through which people show respect: mourning, greeting, serving a meal, addressing a parent. A modern reader takes these for etiquette. Confucius saw in them the means by which raw feeling is shaped into something humane, as a language shapes thought. A child who is taught to bow to his elders is being taught to notice them. Done without feeling, the forms are empty, and he says so often. Done well, they make a community in which force is rarely needed. His political theory follows directly. Government is a matter of setting people right by example: “Let the ruler be a ruler, the minister a minister, the father a father, the son a son.” The person formed in this way he calls the jūnzǐ, the gentleman, a word that had meant a nobleman by birth and that he redefined as a nobleman by character.

At fifteen I set my heart on learning. At thirty I stood firm. At forty I had no doubts. At fifty I knew the decree of Heaven. At sixty my ear was attuned. At seventy I could follow what my heart desired without overstepping the line.

The shortest autobiography in philosophy. The last step is the goal: a person whose desires and the right have become the same thing.

The strongest objection ·

Whose order?

His first critics were his contemporaries. Mozi, a generation later, attacked the Confucians on two counts. Their elaborate funerals and three years of mourning waste the wealth of the living, and their ethic of graded love, in which one cares most for one’s own family, is the very partiality that causes war. The Daoists said that he was treating the symptom. Preaching benevolence and ritual is what people do when natural harmony has already been lost. The Legalists, who actually built the first empire, said that he was naive. A state cannot be run on the hope that rulers will be sages. It needs clear laws and reliable punishments.

The modern objection is different. For two thousand years his teaching was the official creed of the Chinese state, and the relations he named, ruler and subject, father and son, husband and wife, elder and younger, were used to demand obedience from the lower party in each. The students who marched in Beijing in 1919 blamed the weakness of China on “Confucius and Sons” and called for the shop to be torn down. His defenders answer that he taught duties in both directions and said that a ruler who is not a ruler has lost his claim. That is true of the Analects. It remains a fair question whether an ethic built on roles and deference can protect the person whom the roles oppress, and whether it has room for the kind of right that can be claimed against one’s own family.

How we know · 史料

A book he did not write

Confucius wrote nothing that we can be sure of. What we have is the Analects, some five hundred short passages in twenty books, most of them beginning “The Master said.” It was put together by his students and their students over a period that may have lasted two centuries, and scholars agree that the books differ in date. The earliest layers are thought to lie in books 3 to 9, and some of the later books show the concerns of schools that formed after his death. The passages have no context and are arranged in no clear order, so that every reader must decide what question a given saying was answering. The biography in Sima Qian’s Records was written about four hundred years after the events, from materials of very uneven value, and includes stories told by his enemies.

There is also the problem of the name. “Confucianism” has meant at different times the teaching of the Analects, the cosmology of the Han court, the metaphysics of the Song philosophers, and a state examination system. He would have recognized perhaps the first. Reading him well means setting aside what was later built in his name and listening to a man in conversation with his students, who is often tired, sometimes funny, and seldom sure that he has succeeded.

Dharma and the West ·

Confucius and the Buddha

The two were close contemporaries, three thousand kilometers apart, and neither knew of the other. They share a practical temper. When a student asked Confucius about serving the spirits and about death, he replied: “You cannot yet serve the living. How can you serve the spirits? You do not yet understand life. How can you understand death?” The Buddha set aside questions about the origin of the world on similar grounds. Both taught that a person is made by training, both distrusted speculation, and both said in almost the same words that one should not do to others what one would not want for oneself. “To master oneself” is an instruction either could have given.

They part over the family. For Confucius the bonds of parent and child are the root of all virtue, and to cut them is to cut the root. The Buddha left his wife and infant son to seek awakening, and he founded an order of men and women who had done the same. When Buddhism entered China this was the first and deepest objection to it. A monk shaves his head, produces no heir, and does not bow to his parents or his king, and by Confucian standards each of these is a failure of filial duty. Chinese Buddhists replied for centuries that the monk repays his parents in a greater way by leading them toward liberation, and they gave new prominence to texts on gratitude to parents. The long negotiation produced the characteristically Chinese settlement in which the two teachings, with Daoism, were said to be three ways to one end. Each had its sphere. Confucius governed the family and the state, and the Buddha was consulted on suffering and death, about which the Master had declined to speak (Dharma and the West, D18).
