The last lesson asked what art is. This one asks about its oldest companion. When we call something beautiful, are we describing the thing or only reporting how it makes us feel? Most people give one answer in theory and the other in practice.

Is Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder?

01No disputing about taste

Two friends stand in front of a painting. One says it is beautiful and the other says it is ugly. If they were arguing about its width, they would fetch a ruler. For beauty there is no ruler, and an old proverb says that it is pointless to dispute about taste. David Hume, in an essay of 1757, gave the argument behind the proverb in its strongest form: “Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty.” To look for the real beauty of a thing is as fruitless as to look for the real sweet or the real bitter.

Hume then pointed out that nobody believes this. Anyone who claimed that a forgotten versifier was the equal of Milton would be thought to defend “no less an extravagance, than if he had maintained a mole-hill to be as high as Teneriffe.” We say that taste is personal, and we also say that some people have bad taste. A theory of beauty has to explain how both can be said.

02The key in the barrel

Hume’s answer begins with a story from Don Quixote. Two of Sancho Panza’s kinsmen were asked to judge a barrel of wine. One tasted it and pronounced it good, except for a slight taste of leather. The other agreed that it was good, except for a taste of iron. Everyone laughed at them. When the barrel was emptied, there was found at the bottom “an old key with a leathern thong tied to it.”

The pleasure of the wine was in the drinkers, but the leather and the iron were in the barrel, and some palates could detect them where others could not. Hume calls this delicacy of taste and holds that it can be trained. A true judge needs five things: “Strong sense, united to delicate sentiment, improved by practice, perfected by comparison, and cleared of all prejudice.” The joint verdict of such judges, he says, “is the true standard of taste and beauty.” We find them, in practice, by the test of time: “The same Homer, who pleased at Athens and Rome two thousand years ago, is still admired at Paris and at London.”

03A universal voice

Kant thought Hume’s judges could not settle the matter, since an expert’s say-so does not make me feel anything. He looked more closely at what we mean. If I say “Canary wine is pleasant,” I am quite content to be corrected: “It is pleasant to me.” No one argues about that. If I say that a rose or a poem is beautiful, I mean more. I am not reporting a private sensation. In Kant’s words, “we believe that we speak with a universal voice, and we claim the assent of every one.” I expect you to see it too, and I think something is missing in you if you do not.

What entitles me to this, Kant argued, is that the pleasure is disinterested. Taste is “the faculty of judging of an object … by an entirely disinterested satisfaction.” I do not want to eat the rose, own it, or use it. Since my liking rests on nothing peculiar to my appetites or my situation, I suppose that it rests on what I share with every other mind. A judgment of beauty is therefore subjective, being a feeling and not a measurement, and it still makes a claim on everyone. It cannot be proved. I can only say “look again” and point.

04The fish and the cook

The two positions had been stated in China two thousand years earlier. Zhuangzi took the skeptic’s side and made it wider than Hume’s. Mao Qiang and Lady Li were the women that people thought most beautiful, he says. “Fish, seeing them, dived deep. Birds, seeing them, flew high. Deer, seeing them, ran away. Which of the four knows the true beauty of the world?” Human taste is the taste of one species.

Mencius accepted the point about species and turned it around. Within one kind, he argued, natures are alike. “Mouths have the same preferences in flavors.” That is why the whole world follows the cook Yi Ya, who found out first what all our mouths enjoy. Ears are alike, and so the world follows the music master Kuang. Eyes are alike too: anyone who cannot see that Zidu is handsome “has no eyes.” Mencius’s interest was in morals, and he drew the conclusion that hearts must be alike as well. But the argument is Hume’s. Agreement in taste is evidence of a common human nature, and those who notice first what the rest of us will come to like are its experts.

05Beauty in the numbers

The oldest claim that beauty is in the object comes from the followers of Pythagoras. They found that two strings sound well together when their lengths stand in simple ratios: two to one gives the octave, three to two the fifth, four to three the fourth. Harmony, it seemed, was arithmetic made audible. The idea that beauty is proportion ruled Greek architecture and sculpture and returned in the Renaissance. Its best-known modern form, the claim that people prefer rectangles in the golden ratio of about 1.62 to 1, has not held up well. Gustav Fechner reported such a preference in 1876, and later experiments have found it weak or absent.

Psychology has found other regularities. Infants a few months old look longer at the faces that adults rate as attractive. Faces close to the average of a population, and symmetrical ones, are preferred in many cultures. People also come to like shapes, tunes, and even nonsense words more simply through having met them before, which means that some agreement in taste is habit. The evidence supports neither extreme. Part of what we find beautiful comes with being human, part comes from what we have grown used to, and part depends on a trained eye.

06What the proverb leaves out 那句諺語漏掉的

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is true in the sense that Hume and Kant both granted. Without a mind that feels, nothing is beautiful. The proverb leaves out that the eyes of beholders are built much alike, that an eye can be more or less acute, and that it can be educated. A teacher who shows a class how a poem works is trying to bring the students to hear something they did not hear before, and their preferences are left to them. If beauty were only private feeling, there would be nothing for the teacher to show.

Thought experiment ·

Try it: three tests of your eye

First, a test with right answers: find the square that differs. Second, a test with none: choose the rectangle you like best. Third, three statements to accept or reject. Together they place you between Zhuangzi and Pythagoras.

It is with good reason, says Sancho to the squire with the great nose, that I pretend to have a judgment in wine: This is a quality hereditary in our family. Two of my kinsmen were once called to give their opinion of a hogshead, which was supposed to be excellent, being old and of a good vintage. One of them tastes it; considers it; and after mature reflection pronounces the wine to be good, were it not for a small taste of leather, which he perceived in it. The other, after using the same precautions, gives also his verdict in favour of the wine; but with the reserve of a taste of iron, which he could easily distinguish. You cannot imagine how much they were both ridiculed for their judgment. But who laughed in the end? On emptying the hogshead, there was found at the bottom, an old key with a leathern thong tied to it.

Of the Standard of Taste, paragraphs 15–16

Hume adapted the story freely from Don Quixote, Part II, chapter 13. “Pretend” here has its older sense of “claim.” The moral he draws is that qualities really in the object may be too faint for most people to notice and are noticed all the same by a few.

Mao Qiang and Lady Li were what people consider beautiful. Fish, seeing them, dived deep. Birds, seeing them, flew high. Deer, seeing them, broke into a run. Which of these four knows the true beauty of the world? Mouths have the same preferences in flavors. Ears hear the same in sounds. Eyes find the same beauty in looks. When it comes to hearts, should they alone have nothing in common?

Zhuangzi 2; Mencius 6A7

Zhuangzi compares species and finds no common standard. Mencius compares members of one species and finds one. The two passages do not contradict each other, and together they give the modern view: standards of beauty are relative to a kind of creature and largely shared within it.

Both sides ·

Objections and replies

Objection 1 · 反駁

The “test of time” only shows which works the powerful chose to preserve and teach. Homer survived because schoolmasters made boys read him.

Reply · 回應

There is truth in this, and Hume’s list of approved authors shows the limits of his century. Two things can be said in reply. Much that was imposed has been forgotten as soon as the pressure stopped, so preservation by authority is not enough to explain survival. And works have crossed into cultures that had no reason to defer to their origin. Tang poems are read in translation by people who owe nothing to the Tang court.

Objection 2 · 反駁

If beauty were a real feature of things, science would have found it by now. Physics has no term for it.

Reply · 回應

Physics has no term for red either, only for wavelengths. Redness is how certain surfaces look to creatures with eyes like ours, and it would be odd to conclude that nothing is really red. Beauty may be a property of that kind: real, and dependent on the kind of observer. This is roughly where Hume ends up, and it is what the passages from Zhuangzi and Mencius say when they are read together.

Objection 3 · 反駁

Kant’s disinterested pleasure is a fiction. No one looks at anything without wants, memories, and a position in society.

Reply · 回應

The sociologist Pierre Bourdieu argued that taste marks social class and that the “pure” gaze is the luxury of those who do not have to worry about use. Kant need not deny that taste is used in this way. His claim concerns what we are entitled to say. To call a thing beautiful and add that I like it because it flatters me or will sell well is to withdraw the claim. The ideal may seldom be met and still be what the word means.

Dharma and the West ·

A view from the Dharma

The Buddhist analysis sides with Hume on where beauty is found and goes on to ask what it does. Pleasant feeling arises when a sense organ, an object, and attention come together. It belongs to that meeting and is not a property of the object. What we call the beauty of a thing is a perception laid over the contact, shaped by habit and desire. The texts treat this perception as trainable, as Hume does, and they train it in the opposite direction. A monk troubled by desire for bodies is taught to contemplate the body as a collection of parts, hair, nails, teeth, skin, until the perception of beauty stops arising of itself. The aim is freedom. The practice does not hold that bodies are in truth ugly. It holds that a mind which cannot help finding things attractive is not in command of itself.

The same tradition contains some of the earliest nature poetry in the world, composed by monks and nuns who had finished that training. Mahākassapa, the strictest ascetic among the Buddha’s disciples, describes the hills where he lived: “The rain comes down on the lovely flats, in the mountains frequented by seers. Echoing with the cries of peacocks, these rocky crags delight me!” The line is repeated like a refrain. It shows that the end of craving does not end the sense of beauty. What is left is delight without the wish to own or keep, which is very close to what Kant meant by disinterested pleasure. On this account disinterested pleasure is the ordinary condition of a mind that has stopped grasping (Dharma and Western Philosophy D25).
