A29 · Beauty and Art
What Is Art?
In 1917 a urinal was sent to an art exhibition in New York. Four definitions of art, from Plato’s mirror to the artworld, each tested against ten objects that you sort yourself, with Xie He, Su Shi, and Dewey for company.
People have made paintings, songs, and poems in every society we know of, and for most of history nobody needed to say what they had in common. The question became urgent when artists began to make things that looked like nothing art had been before. This lesson opens the unit on beauty and art by asking what the word covers.

What Is Art?
01A urinal in New York
In April 1917 the Society of Independent Artists held its first exhibition in New York. Its rule was simple: any artist who paid the fee could show a work, and there would be no jury. One entry was a porcelain urinal, laid on its back, signed “R. Mutt 1917,” and titled Fountain. The directors argued, and the object was kept out of sight behind a partition for the length of the show. Marcel Duchamp, a French artist who sat on the board, resigned in protest. A small magazine edited by his friends then printed a defense: “Whether Mr Mutt with his own hands made the fountain or not has no importance. He CHOSE it.” He took an ordinary article, the writer said, and “created a new thought for that object.”
The original was lost soon afterward. The examples now in museums are replicas made decades later. In 2004 five hundred British art professionals voted Fountain the most influential work of the twentieth century. Whatever one thinks of it, it did what a good philosophical example does. It was a case that every existing definition of art got wrong, or else got right for an embarrassing reason.
02A mirror held up to the world 對著世界舉起的一面鏡子
The oldest definition says that art is imitation. Plato states it in order to attack it. There is the idea of a bed, he says, and there is the bed that a carpenter makes by looking to the idea, and then there is the bed in a painting, which copies only how the carpenter’s bed looks from one side. The imitator, he concludes, is “thrice removed from the king and from the truth.” Anyone can do what he does by “turning a mirror round and round.” Aristotle kept the definition and dropped the contempt: people learn by imitating and take pleasure in recognizing a likeness. For two thousand years most European theory began here. The trouble is that music imitates nothing in particular, and neither does a temple, a carpet, or a line of calligraphy.
A second definition looks to the maker. In 1897 Leo Tolstoy, by then more preacher than novelist, wrote that “art is a human activity, consisting in this, that one man consciously, by means of certain external signs, hands on to others feelings he has lived through, and that other people are infected by these feelings, and also experience them.” A boy who meets a wolf and then tells the story so that his listeners feel his fear has made art. By this test Tolstoy rejected most of Shakespeare and Beethoven as insincere or unintelligible to plain people, and praised peasant songs.
China arrived at this view first and never held the other. The Book of Documents says that “poetry speaks what the heart is set on,” and the preface to the Book of Songs explains: “In the heart it is intent. Sent forth in words it is poetry.” Chinese critics took it for granted that a poem or a piece of calligraphy shows the person who made it. The weakness of the expression theory lies elsewhere. A cry of pain expresses a feeling and is not a poem, and much great art was made to order by people whose feelings we know nothing about.
04Lines and colors
A third definition looks at the work alone. In 1914 the English critic Clive Bell asked what a Persian bowl, a Chinese carpet, a Giotto fresco, and a Cézanne have in common, and answered: “lines and colours combined in a particular way, certain forms and relations of forms, stir our aesthetic emotions.” He called this significant form. What a picture shows is irrelevant, and Bell dismissed a famous painting of a crowded railway station, full of lifelike detail, as interesting and not art at all.
Chinese painters had long agreed that likeness is not the point. Around 500 CE Xie He listed six principles of painting and put first “spirit resonance, which means vitality.” Fidelity to the object came third. Su Shi wrote in the eleventh century: “To judge a painting by its likeness is to see as a child sees.” What these writers valued, though, was the life in the brushwork and the character of the painter that it revealed, which is nearer to expression than to Bell’s pure pattern. Bell’s definition has a further problem. When asked what makes a form significant, he could only say that it is the kind that moves us aesthetically, and the definition goes round in a circle.
05Whatever the artworld says
None of the three could explain Fountain. It imitates nothing, expresses no feeling that anyone can name, and has the same form as every other urinal from the same factory. In 1964 the philosopher Arthur Danto saw Andy Warhol’s Brillo Boxes, plywood copies of supermarket cartons, and concluded that what makes something art cannot be anything the eye can see. It is “an atmosphere of artistic theory, a knowledge of the history of art: an artworld.” George Dickie turned this into a definition: a work of art is an artifact that someone acting on behalf of the artworld has offered as a candidate for appreciation. On this account Fountain is art for the plain reason that it was put forward and taken up as art.
The institutional theory fits every case, and critics say that this is its fault. It tells us that something is art when the right people call it so, and is silent about why they should. Morris Weitz had argued in 1956 that the search was a mistake from the start. Art, like a game, has no single feature shared by all its instances. They are linked by overlapping resemblances, and each new movement extends the family. On this view the question “What is art?” has no final answer, and the changes in the answer from one age to the next are a record of what each age cared about.
06The object and the experience
John Dewey thought all four definitions looked in the wrong place. They ask what kind of object a work of art is. In Art as Experience (1934) he argued that art is something that happens between a person and the world, and that the museum piece is only its most concentrated form. A mechanic absorbed in a job well done and a cook who cares about the meal have experiences of the same kind as the painter’s. A society that locks art in special buildings, he thought, has usually let it drain out of ordinary work.
The question has a new form today. A computer program can now produce an image that imitates well, has striking form, and wins a prize at an art fair, while no one involved has had any feeling to express. Whether it is art depends on which of these theories is right, and the answer will affect who is paid and who is credited.

In their own words
The founding statement of the imitation theory, and two Chinese texts that put likeness third and last.
Plato, Republic, Book X, 596d–597e; Xie He, Classified Record of Ancient Painters, preface; Su Shi, “Written on a Painting of Flowering Branches by Secretary Wang of Yanling” 柏拉圖《理想國》卷十 596d–597e;謝赫《古畫品錄・序》;蘇軾〈書鄢陵王主簿所畫折枝二首〉其一 · Plato translated by Benjamin Jowett (public domain); Xie He and Su Shi translated for this series
Well then, here are three beds: one existing in nature, which is made by God, as I think that we may say—for no one else can be the maker? No. There is another which is the work of the carpenter? Yes. And the work of the painter is a third? Yes. […] And the tragic poet is an imitator, and therefore, like all other imitators, he is thrice removed from the king and from the truth? That appears to be so.
Plato counts inclusively, so “thrice removed” means third in line: idea, object, picture. His target is Homer and the tragedians, whom Athenians treated as teachers. The argument is that a poet can describe a general or a doctor convincingly while knowing nothing of war or medicine.
What are the six principles? The first is spirit resonance, which means vitality. The second is bone method, which means the use of the brush. The third is fidelity to the object in depicting forms. The fourth is conformity to kind in applying colors. The fifth is planning and placing. The sixth is transmission by copying. To judge a painting by its likeness is to see as a child sees. To insist that a poem be on its stated subject is surely not to know poetry.
Xie He’s list was repeated by every later Chinese writer on painting. The punctuation of the six phrases is disputed, and the reading given here is the traditional one. Su Shi was praising a friend’s small picture of a sprig with one red flower, which he said conveyed a boundless spring.

Objections and replies
This is a quarrel about a word. Call Fountain art or do not. Nothing changes.
A good deal changes. The word decides what museums buy with public money, what schools teach, what copyright protects, and whose work is called craft and paid accordingly. For centuries embroidery and pottery were excluded and oil painting included, and the people on each side of that line were not a random selection.
If anything can be art, then the word means nothing, and skill, which is the one thing people can actually judge, has been thrown away.
The institutional theory separates two questions that the objection runs together: whether something is art, and whether it is any good. A thing can be art and bad art. Skill remains a standard of quality. The reply has limits. If the classification carries no judgment at all, it is hard to see why anyone fought so hard to have Fountain admitted.
“Art” as a single category is a modern European idea. Other cultures made beautiful and meaningful things without it.
This is true and important. The grouping of painting, sculpture, music, poetry, and architecture as the fine arts dates from eighteenth-century Europe. Classical China ranked calligraphy, poetry, and painting together as the pursuits of the educated and left sculpture and building to artisans. The modern Chinese word for art, 藝術, took its present sense from Japanese in the late nineteenth century. Recognizing this supports Weitz: the category has a history, and its edges have always been drawn by particular people for particular reasons.

A view from the Dharma
The early texts are wary of the arts as entertainment. Those who keep the eight precepts on observance days give up dancing, singing, music, and shows, and so do monks and nuns at all times. One discourse explains why. Tālapuṭa, the head of a company of performers, asks the Buddha whether it is true, as his teachers said, that a dancer who makes people laugh is reborn among the laughing gods. Twice the Buddha answers, “Enough, chief, let it be. Don’t ask me that.” Asked a third time, he says that people are already bound by greed, hate, and delusion, and that a performer who presents them with “even more arousing things” makes them more heedless. Tālapuṭa weeps, and says that he is not weeping at the answer. He weeps because he has been deceived for so long. The test applied is Tolstoy’s, with a different standard: art is judged by the states of mind it passes on.
That standard cuts both ways, and the tradition drew the other conclusion as well. The Buddha taught in verse and in images that people remembered for a lifetime. Tālapuṭa became a monk, and a long poem under his name is preserved in the canon. Later Buddhists filled Asia with sculpture, painting, chant, and calligraphy, and gave an account of what these are for: they are a finger pointing at the moon, to be valued for what they direct the mind toward and not held on to for themselves. In Chan and Zen, brush painting and calligraphy became practices in their own right, in which the quality of the line was taken to show the state of the mind that made it, which is close to what Xie He meant by spirit resonance (Dharma and Western Philosophy D18).
