A life in three scenes
A book written in his twenties
Hume was born in Edinburgh in 1711 and grew up on his family’s small estate near the English border. His father died when he was two. He went to the University of Edinburgh at about eleven, which was early even for the time, and was expected to become a lawyer. He found that he could not bear the law and wanted only to read philosophy. At eighteen, he later said, there opened up to him “a new scene of thought,” and he worked at it so hard that his health broke down for several years.
In 1734 he went to France to live cheaply and write, and settled at La Flèche, the town where Descartes had gone to school. There, between the ages of twenty-three and twenty-six, he wrote A Treatise of Human Nature. It is one of the great books of philosophy, and it failed. “It fell dead-born from the press,” he wrote, without even exciting a murmur among the zealots. He concluded that the fault lay in the manner and not the matter, and spent years recasting its arguments in shorter and more graceful works.
No professor’s chair
Hume never held a university post. He applied for the chair of moral philosophy at Edinburgh in 1745 and for a chair at Glasgow a few years later, and both times the clergy blocked him on the ground that he was an unbeliever. He earned his living as tutor to a mad nobleman, as secretary to a general, and then as keeper of the Advocates’ Library in Edinburgh, which gave him the books he needed to write a six-volume History of England. The History made him rich and, in his own time, far more famous than his philosophy did.
Le bon David
In 1763 he went to Paris as secretary to the British ambassador and found himself a celebrity. The French called him le bon David, and he was by every account a kind, sociable, and very fat man who loved good dinners. He tried to help the persecuted Jean-Jacques Rousseau by bringing him to England, and Rousseau, growing suspicious, accused him of plotting against him. The quarrel entertained Europe.
He retired to Edinburgh, where he cooked for his friends and revised his works. In 1775 he learned that he had a fatal disorder of the bowels. He faced death without fear and without changing his views, to the dismay of James Boswell, who visited to see whether an unbeliever could really die calmly. He arranged for his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, which he had kept unpublished for twenty-five years, to appear after his death. His friend Adam Smith wrote that he had always considered him “as approaching as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human frailty will permit.”

The central idea ·
Every idea is a copy of an impression
Hume divides the contents of the mind into impressions, which are the vivid perceptions we have when we see, feel, love, or hate, and ideas, which are the faint copies of these that we use in thinking. His first principle is that every simple idea is copied from an earlier impression. This gives him a test. When a philosopher uses a word, ask from what impression the supposed idea is derived. If none can be found, the word has no meaning.
He then applies the test to the most important ideas in philosophy, with destructive results. Necessary connection: we have an impression of one event following another and none of any tie between them. The self: “when I enter most intimately into what I call myself, I always stumble on some particular perception or other,” and so a person is “nothing but a bundle or collection of different perceptions.” Moral judgment: no observation of an act reveals its wrongness, which lies in the feeling of the observer, and no statement of what ought to be can be deduced from statements of what is. Even action is ruled by feeling: “Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions.” Reason can tell us how to get what we want. It cannot tell us what to want.
Be a philosopher; but, amidst all your philosophy, be still a man.
Nature’s advice to the thinker, as Hume imagines it, and a fair summary of how he lived.
The strongest objection ·
His own fork cuts him 他自己的叉子刺到了他
The Enquiry ends with one of the most quoted paragraphs in philosophy. Take any book, Hume says, and ask whether it contains abstract reasoning about quantity or number, or experimental reasoning about matters of fact. If it contains neither, “Commit it then to the flames: for it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion.” The obvious question is which of the two the Enquiry itself contains. The claim that all meaningful statements fall into these two classes is not a truth of mathematics. It does not look like a report of experiments either. By its own test the book seems to belong in the fire. The same difficulty returned in the twentieth century for the logical positivists, who revived Hume’s principle and were asked how it could itself be verified.
Kant’s objection goes deeper. Hume assumed that the mind receives impressions passively and that order must be found among them. Kant replied that a stream of unconnected impressions would not be an experience of anything. To perceive a ball moving, one must already connect what is seen now with what was seen a moment ago, according to rules. The connections Hume could not find in his impressions are, on this view, what the mind contributes in order to have experience at all. Kant said it was Hume who “first interrupted my dogmatic slumber.”
How we know · 史料
A footnote that has not been forgiven
Hume’s reputation for good sense and good nature makes one passage harder to read. In a footnote added in 1753 to his essay “Of National Characters,” he wrote that he was inclined to suspect that Black people were naturally inferior to whites, and he dismissed a report of a learned Black man in Jamaica as probably exaggerated. The claim had no basis in evidence and was challenged in his own day by the philosopher James Beattie, among others. He revised the note late in life and did not withdraw it. In 2020 the University of Edinburgh removed his name from one of its buildings. The passage is sometimes excused as a prejudice of the age. It is fairer to say that the philosopher who told us to proportion belief to evidence failed, on this subject, to do so, and that the failure did harm.
Dharma and the West ·
Hume and the Buddha
No Western philosopher sounds more Buddhist than Hume on the self. He looked inward for the owner of his experiences and found only the experiences, “a bundle or collection of different perceptions, which succeed each other with an inconceivable rapidity, and are in a perpetual flux and movement.” A Theravāda monk analyzing the person into five aggregates would say almost the same. The psychologist Alison Gopnik has even argued that Hume could have heard of Buddhist ideas at La Flèche, where one of the Jesuits had lived in Siam and knew a fellow missionary’s report on Tibetan Buddhism. The evidence is circumstantial, and most scholars think Hume reached his view independently.
The contrast lies in what each did next. Hume found his conclusions disturbing, and his remedy was to leave the study: “I dine, I play a game of backgammon, I converse, and am merry with my friends,” after which his speculations seemed cold and strained. For him the discovery that there is no self was a theoretical result with no practical use. For the Buddha it was the most practical discovery possible, because clinging to a self is the cause of suffering, and seeing through it, steadily and in experience, is release. Hume reached the insight by argument and then set it aside at dinner. The Buddhist path is a method for keeping it in view (Dharma and the West, D2).
