We use one word for the person we do business with, the person we laugh with, and the person who knows us. Philosophers have asked whether these are the same relation in different strengths or different relations altogether, and why a life without the last kind seems not worth living.

What Is a Friend?

01The thing no one would live without 誰也不肯沒有的東西

Aristotle gave two of the ten books of his Ethics to friendship, more than to any other single subject, and he opens with a sentence that states its importance flatly: “without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods.” The rich need friends in order to have someone to benefit, the poor need them as a refuge, the young to keep them from error, and the old to care for them. Modern moral philosophy has had much less to say. Its main theories are about what we owe to everyone, and a friend is someone to whom we give what we do not owe and from whom we expect what we could not demand. The ancient writers, Greek and Chinese, treated the subject as central, and the best way into it is still Aristotle’s question: what is it that we like when we like a person?

02Three kinds 三種

There are three things, he says, for which we can love anything: because it is useful, because it is pleasant, or because it is good. “There are therefore three kinds of friendship.” In the first, each party values the other for some advantage. Business partners are friends in this way, and so are many neighbors and colleagues. In the second, each enjoys the other’s company: the people we drink, travel, or play with. Aristotle does not despise these. He observes two things about them. In both, the other person is loved for something he supplies, and so they last only as long as the supply. “Those who love each other for their utility do not love each other for themselves but in virtue of some good which they get from each other.” When the usefulness ends or tastes change, the friendship dissolves, and no one is to blame.

The third kind is different. “Perfect friendship is the friendship of men who are good, and alike in virtue,” and such friends “wish well to their friends for their sake.” Here the person himself is what is loved, his character and not his services. This friendship includes the other two, since good people are both useful and pleasant to each other, and it lasts, because character is the most durable thing about a person. It is also rare. It needs time and shared life, “for men cannot know each other till they have eaten salt together,” and nobody can have it with many people, any more than one can be in love with many at once. Aristotle adds a phrase that has been repeated ever since: a friend of this kind is “another self.”

03Because it was he 因為是他

Aristotle’s account makes friendship reasonable: we love the good because it is good. The French essayist Michel de Montaigne, who had one such friend and lost him, thought that this leaves out the center of the experience. He met Étienne de La Boétie at a crowded feast in Bordeaux when both were young magistrates, and from that first meeting, he says, nothing was so near to either as the other. La Boétie died a few years later, at thirty-two. Montaigne wrote the essay on friendship some ten years afterward. In such a friendship, he says, two souls “mix and work themselves into one piece, with so universal a mixture, that there is no more sign of the seam by which they were first conjoined.” Asked for the reason, he can give none. “If a man should importune me to give a reason why I loved him, I find it could no otherwise be expressed, than by making answer: because it was he, because it was I.”

The disagreement is real. For Aristotle a friend is loved for qualities, and anyone with the same qualities would in principle do as well. For Montaigne the friend cannot be replaced, and a list of his virtues would explain nothing. Both seem to be describing something true. We do admire our closest friends, and we would be dismayed to learn that they were cruel. Yet we would not exchange them for someone more admirable.

04The one who knows the tune 知音

The Chinese tradition has its own word for Montaigne’s kind of friend, and it comes from a story. Bo Ya was a master of the zither, and Zhong Ziqi was good at listening. When Bo Ya played with his mind on high mountains, Zhong Ziqi said, “Splendid! Lofty as Mount Tai!” When his mind was on flowing water, Zhong Ziqi said, “Splendid! Broad as the great rivers!” Whatever Bo Ya had in mind, Zhong Ziqi never failed to grasp it. When Zhong Ziqi died, another version adds, Bo Ya broke the zither and cut its strings and never played again, judging that there was no one left in the world worth playing for. The phrase zhīyīn, “one who knows the tone,” has meant a true friend ever since. What the story picks out is being understood. Zhong Ziqi did nothing for Bo Ya and gave him no pleasure that a paying audience could not have given. He heard what was meant.

The historian Sima Qian preserves a second example in the words of the statesman Guan Zhong. When he was poor and took the larger share of their profits, his friend Bao Shuya did not think him greedy, knowing that he was poor. When he fled three times in battle, Bao did not think him a coward, knowing that he had an old mother. “It was my parents who gave me life,” Guan Zhong said, “and it is Bao who knows me.” To be known in this way is to be seen at one’s worst and read correctly. It asks more of a friend than Aristotle’s likeness in virtue.

05Three that help and three that harm

Confucius approaches the matter as a teacher would, by asking what a friend does to you. “Three kinds of friends are a gain and three are a loss. To have friends who are upright, friends who are true to their word, and friends who have heard much is a gain. To have friends who are smooth, friends who are soft and pleasing, and friends who are glib is a loss.” The helpful friend tells you the truth, can be relied on, and knows things you do not. The harmful ones are, in Aristotle’s terms, friends of pleasure. They agree with you. His student Zengzi states the purpose in a line: the gentleman “uses his friends to support his humaneness.” A friend is a partner in becoming a better person, and friendship is the one relationship among the five Confucian bonds that is chosen and that holds between equals.

Zhuangzi offers a caution about warmth. “The friendship of the gentleman is plain as water. The friendship of the small man is sweet as rich wine. The gentleman’s plainness brings closeness. The small man’s sweetness ends in a break.” A relation that needs constant sweetness is being held together by something other than the two people.

06Friends by the hundred

The word has recently been stretched. A person may now have a thousand “friends” on a screen, most of whom he has not eaten salt with. The anthropologist Robin Dunbar has argued, from the size of primate brains and from counts of human groups, that a person can keep up stable relationships with about a hundred and fifty people, of whom about fifteen are close and about five are intimate. The numbers have held up fairly well in studies of telephone records and of online networks. They are Aristotle’s point in figures: the highest kind of friendship needs shared time, and time is limited.

That leaves a question the exercise below is meant to raise. Most of the people we call friends are friends of use or of pleasure, and there is nothing wrong with that. The difficulty comes from not knowing which is which. We are hurt when a friendship of convenience ends with the convenience, and we neglect, because it is plain as water, the one that would have lasted.

Perfect friendship is the friendship of men who are good, and alike in virtue; for these wish well alike to each other qua good, and they are good themselves. Now those who wish well to their friends for their sake are most truly friends; for they do this by reason of own nature and not incidentally; therefore their friendship lasts as long as they are good—and goodness is an enduring thing.

Nicomachean Ethics VIII.3, 1156b7

“Qua good” means “in so far as they are good.” The phrase “for their sake” is the heart of the passage. Aristotle is contrasting it with wishing a friend well for one’s own sake, as a man wishes his wine to keep so that he may drink it. The last clause gives the reason such friendships last, and it shows what the argument depends on: that character is stable. A modern reader may doubt this. People change, and the friendships that survive are often those in which each has gone on loving the other through the change.

…in the friendship I speak of, they mix and work themselves into one piece, with so universal a mixture, that there is no more sign of the seam by which they were first conjoined. If a man should importune me to give a reason why I loved him, I find it could no otherwise be expressed, than by making answer: because it was he, because it was I.

Essays I.27 (I.28 in modern editions)

Close reading · 精讀

The most famous sentence Montaigne wrote was an afterthought. In the first edition of 1580 the passage ended by saying that the reason could not be expressed. He wrote “because it was he” in the margin of his own copy some years later, and “because it was I” later still, in different ink. The two halves matter equally. He is saying that the friendship is explained by nothing general on either side, neither by the friend’s merits nor by his own needs. “They” at the start refers to the two souls. The image of the seam comes from tailoring: two pieces of cloth so well joined that the join has vanished.

Both sides ·

Objections and replies

Objection 1 · 反駁

Friendship is unfair. Morality tells us to treat everyone equally, and a friend is someone we favor.

Reply · 回應

The tension is real, and Mozi and the utilitarians have pressed it. Two replies are available. One is that a world without special attachments would contain far less care in total, since care for everyone in general is thin, so that even an impartial judge would approve of friendship. The other is that this defense gets the matter backward. A man who visits his friend in the hospital because friendship maximizes welfare has, as one philosopher put it, one thought too many. On this second view friendship is among the things that make a human life worth having, and a morality with no room for it has left something out.

Objection 2 · 反駁

Aristotle says we should not befriend those worse than ourselves, and Confucius says the same. If everyone followed that advice, the better person in each pair would refuse, and no one would have a friend.

Reply · 回應

The puzzle about the Analects line “have no friend who is not your equal” is old, and commentators have long read it otherwise: do not take as your model of friendship someone who is unlike you in aims, or more simply, look for what in each friend is better than you. Confucius also says that among any three people walking he will find a teacher. Friends are seldom better or worse across the board. One is braver and the other more patient, and each can be the other’s superior in something.

Objection 3 · 反駁

“Another self” is the wrong ideal. If my friend is another me, I have learned nothing and loved no one but myself.

Reply · 回應

The objection takes the phrase too literally. Aristotle means that I stand to my friend as I stand to myself: I want his good as directly as I want my own, and his joys and griefs are mine. He does not mean that the friend resembles me in every respect, and elsewhere he says that we know ourselves best by looking at a friend, as we see our own face only in a mirror. That needs someone who is other. The Chinese stories make the same point by contrast. Zhong Ziqi could not play. What he gave Bo Ya was an ear.

Dharma and the West ·

A view from the Dharma

The Buddha’s attendant Ānanda once remarked that good friendship is half of the spiritual life. “Not so, Ānanda! Not so, Ānanda! Good friends, companions, and associates are the whole of the spiritual life.” A person with good friends can be expected to develop the path, and the Buddha describes himself as the good friend by relying on whom beings are freed. The Pali term is kalyāṇamitta, the beautiful or admirable friend. It is close to Aristotle’s friendship of character, with the goal moved: the friend is the one who helps you toward liberation, where Aristotle’s helps you toward a flourishing life in the city.

For lay life the Buddha gave advice that reads like a longer version of the Analects passage. He tells the young householder Sigālaka to recognize four enemies disguised as friends, among them the one who only takes and the flatterer, and four good-hearted friends: “the helper, the friend in good times and bad, the counselor, and the one who’s sympathetic.” The counselor is described in words Confucius could have used: “They keep you from doing bad. They support you in doing good. They teach you what you do not know.” The tradition adds one thing the philosophers lack. Loving-kindness, mettā, comes from the same root as mitta, friend. It is friendliness trained until it no longer depends on who the other person is, and it is to be extended in the end to strangers and enemies. Aristotle says that we can be friends in the full sense with very few. The Buddha agrees about friendship and holds that the goodwill at its center can be made boundless.
