A boy raised in Latin
Montaigne was born in 1533 on his family’s estate in the wine country east of Bordeaux. His great-grandfather had made a fortune in salt fish and bought the land and the title with it. His father had ideas about education. The infant was sent to nurse with a peasant family, so that he would feel close to the poor. He was then given a German tutor who spoke no French, and everyone in the household, including the servants, was required to address the child only in Latin. He was six before he heard French. Each morning he was woken by music. He said later that he had been brought up with such gentleness that he was unfit for effort, and it gave him a lifelong belief that learning should be a pleasure.
He studied law and at twenty-four became a magistrate in the high court at Bordeaux. There he met Étienne de La Boétie, a colleague three years older, a poet and the author of a bold essay against tyranny. The friendship lasted until La Boétie’s death in 1563. Montaigne sat by the bed through the last days and wrote a long account of them to his own father. He said that the rest of his life was smoke and a dark, tedious night. He married two years later, without much enthusiasm, and of his six daughters only one lived to grow up.
The tower
In 1571, on his thirty-eighth birthday, he retired. He had a Latin inscription painted on the wall of his study, saying that Michel de Montaigne, long weary of the servitude of the court and of public employments, had withdrawn to the bosom of the learned Muses. The study was on the third floor of a round tower at the corner of the house, lined with a thousand books, and on its ceiling beams he had some fifty sayings painted, most of them from the ancient skeptics and from the Bible: I suspend judgment. What do I know? Man is clay. He meant to spend his remaining years in calm.
The calm did not come. His mind, he found, behaved like a runaway horse and gave birth to so many chimeras and fantastic monsters that he began to write them down, hoping to make his mind ashamed of itself. That is how the Essays began. Outside the tower France was tearing itself apart. The wars between Catholics and Protestants broke out when he was twenty-nine and were still going on when he died, and the massacre of Saint Bartholomew’s Day took place the year after his retirement. His estate lay between the two parties. He left his gates unlocked through the whole of the wars and was robbed once.
Mayor, traveler, patient
The first two books of the Essays were published in 1580. He then set off on horseback through Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, partly to see the world and partly to try the mineral springs, since he had begun to pass kidney stones, the disease that had killed his father. In Rome he learned that he had been elected mayor of Bordeaux. He served four years, carrying messages between the Catholic king and the Protestant Henry of Navarre, who twice stayed at his house. When plague broke out in the city at the end of his term, he declined to enter it to hand over his office, for which he has been blamed ever since.
He spent his last years adding to the book. He never deleted. He wrote new passages in the margins of his own copy, so that an essay begun in his thirties may contain a remark from his fifties contradicting it. A third book appeared in 1588, franker and more personal than the first two. He died in 1592, during a mass said in his room, of an inflammation of the throat that had taken away his speech. He was fifty-nine.

The central idea ·
The French word essai means a trial or an attempt, and Montaigne chose it to describe what he was doing. He takes a subject, thumbs, cannibals, fear, the education of children, and tries his judgment on it, to see what he thinks. The subject of every essay is finally the one named in his note to the reader: “myself am the matter of my book.” Philosophers before him had asked what Man is. He asks what this man is, and reports what he finds with a candor nobody had attempted: his laziness and bad memory, his fondness for scratching his ears, his fear of pain, the way his opinions shift with his digestion. He justifies the project in a sentence. “Every man carries the entire form of human condition.” To describe one person truthfully is to describe something about all.
What he finds is movement. “I cannot fix my object; ’tis always tottering and reeling by a natural giddiness… I do not paint its being, I paint its passage,” from day to day and from minute to minute. He contradicts himself, he says, and does not contradict the truth. From this comes his skepticism. A creature so changeable, whose reason can be bent by a toothache, a custom, or a glass of wine, has small claim to certainty about God and nature, and none to burn other people for disagreeing. His longest essay turns the arguments of the ancient skeptics against human pride. The lesson he draws is tolerance and a certain cheerfulness. Since we cannot be angels, we had better learn to be human well. “There is nothing so fine and legitimate,” he writes at the end of the book, “as well and duly to play the man.”
I do not paint its being, I paint its passage.
He is speaking of himself as the object of his own portrait.
The strongest objection ·
The foolish project
The deepest criticism came from his greatest reader. Blaise Pascal, two generations later, knew the Essays almost by heart, borrowed from them on every page, and condemned them. “The foolish project he has of painting himself!” Montaigne, he said, inspires indifference about salvation. He shows us how wretched and inconstant we are and then tells us to be at ease with it, and he thinks only of dying softly and without fuss. For Pascal the discovery that reason is weak and the self a muddle should drive a person to his knees. Montaigne makes a pillow of it.
A second objection is political. His skepticism leads him to conservatism. Since we cannot know that any new arrangement would be better, he argues, we should keep the laws and the religion we were born under, and he remained a Catholic and a royalist on those grounds. Critics reply that this is a comfortable conclusion for a landowner, and that the same argument would have told the Protestants of his day, and the slaves of the New World, to stay as they were. He saw part of the difficulty. His essay on the peoples of Brazil asks which is the more barbarous, to eat a man who is dead or to torture one who is alive, as his own countrymen were doing.
How we know · 史料
A book that kept growing
With Montaigne the problem is the reverse of the usual one. We have too much of him. He published the Essays three times in his life and was preparing a fourth edition when he died, working in a printed copy whose margins he had filled with about a thousand additions in his own hand. That volume, the Bordeaux Copy, survives. Modern editions mark the three layers with the letters A, B, and C, so that a reader can see a sentence of 1580 interrupted by a second thought of 1588 and a third of 1592. Which Montaigne is the real one is a question he would have enjoyed. His literary executor, Marie de Gournay, a young admirer whom he called his adopted daughter, brought out an edition in 1595 from another annotated copy, now lost, and scholars still dispute which text is closer to his final wishes.
There is also the question of how far to trust the portrait. He promises to paint himself whole and naked, and he was a public man during a civil war, writing under the eye of the Church, which placed the book on its Index in 1676. He says a great deal about his kidney stones and very little about his wife or his mother.
Dharma and the West ·
Montaigne and the Buddha
Montaigne did by temperament what the Buddha taught as a discipline. He watched his own mind, day after day, for twenty years, and wrote down what he saw without trying to make it consistent. What he saw was what the Buddha said one would see: no fixed thing, a passage. “I do not paint its being, I paint its passage” is as good a statement of impermanence applied to the self as European literature contains, and it was reached by observation with no doctrine to guide it. His essay arguing that to philosophize is to learn to die recommends keeping death always before the mind so that it loses its strangeness, which is the practice the Buddhist texts call mindfulness of death. And his refusal to assert, with “What do I know?” struck as a medal, recalls the Buddha’s warning against clinging to views.
What he does with the discovery is his own. Having found the self to be a flux, he settles into it and enjoys the view. He has no wish to be liberated from himself. The Buddha treats the same finding as the start of a path, because he holds that clinging to this flux as “me” is the cause of suffering and can be ended. Montaigne also lacks a method. He observes whatever comes up, where the Buddhist practitioner observes in a set order and with a trained stillness of attention. Pascal accused him of resting where he should have gone on. A Buddhist would make the same criticism more kindly, and would add that he had seen more than most philosophers by simply looking (Dharma and the West, D5).
