How Do Words Get Their Meaning? 字的意思從哪裡來?
A child points and says “dog,” and somehow the noise comes to mean the animal. Augustine’s picture of how that happens, Locke’s ideas in the head, Frege’s two stars, Wittgenstein’s beetle in a box, and Xunzi on names fixed by agreement.
一個孩子指著說「狗」,然後不知怎麼地,那個聲音就有了「那種動物」的意思。奧古斯丁對這件事的描繪、洛克說的腦袋裡的觀念、弗雷格的兩顆星、維根斯坦的盒中甲蟲,以及荀子的「約定俗成」。
Every earlier lesson in this series was conducted in words, and assumed that we understood them. This lesson, the first of a unit on language and science, asks what that understanding consists in. A sound or a mark is a physical thing like any other. What has to be added for it to mean something?
這個系列前面的每一課,都是用字詞進行的,並且假定了我們懂得它們。這一課是「語言與科學」單元的第一課;它問的是:那個「懂」是由什麼構成的?一個聲音或一個記號,是跟別的東西一樣的物理事物。要加上什麼,它才有意思?

How Do Words Get Their Meaning? 字的意思從哪裡來?
01Pointing and naming 指著,叫出名字
The most natural answer was given by Augustine, remembering how he learned to speak. “When they named any thing, and as they spoke turned towards it, I saw and remembered that they called what they would point out by the name they uttered.” Words are names, and each name stands for an object. To learn a language is to learn which name goes with which thing, and a sentence is a string of such names.
最自然的答案是奧古斯丁給的;他回憶自己是怎麼學會說話的。「當他們叫出某樣東西的名字,並且一邊說一邊轉向它的時候,我看見了,也記住了:他們用發出的那個名字,來稱呼他們要指出的東西。」字詞是名字;每一個名字代表一樣東西。學一種語言,就是學會哪個名字配哪樣東西;而一個句子,是這樣的名字串成的一串。
The picture fits “dog” and “table.” It fits less well when we try other words. Nothing can be pointed at for “five,” “because,” “perhaps,” or “hello.” And pointing itself has to be understood. If I point at a rabbit running past and say “gavagai,” you cannot tell from the gesture whether I am naming the animal, its color, its running, the number one, or the act of pointing. A child who learns from pointing must already know a good deal about what kind of thing is likely to be meant.
02Ideas in the head 腦袋裡的觀念
John Locke moved meaning indoors. “Words, in their primary or immediate signification, stand for nothing but the ideas in the mind of him that uses them.” I have an idea of gold, I attach the sound “gold” to it, and when I speak, the sound calls up the matching idea in you. The link between sound and idea is “perfectly arbitrary,” which is why there are many languages. This explains how words for absent or imaginary things can have meaning. It leaves a difficulty that Locke saw. I can never look into your mind to check that your idea matches mine. If meaning is a private item, no one can know that anyone else means what he means.
In 1892 the logician Gottlob Frege showed that meaning cannot simply be the thing named either. The morning star and the evening star are one object, the planet Venus. Yet “the morning star is the evening star” was a discovery of astronomy, while “the morning star is the morning star” tells us nothing. Two names for one thing can differ in meaning. Frege concluded that a name has a sense, a way in which it presents its object, as well as a reference. Sense, he insisted, is public. It is what a whole community grasps, and no one keeps it in his head as a private image.
03The beetle in the box 盒子裡的甲蟲
Ludwig Wittgenstein began his last book by quoting Augustine’s account of learning to speak, and spent the book taking it apart. He asked his readers to stop looking for the thing a word stands for and to look at what people do with it. “For a large class of cases,” he wrote, “the meaning of a word is its use in the language.” Words are like the tools in a toolbox, a hammer, a ruler, a pot of glue, and are as various in their work. To know what “five” means is to be able to count, and to know what “hello” means is to know when to say it.
Against Locke he offered a small story. Suppose everyone has a box with something in it, which we call a beetle. No one can look into anyone else’s box, and each says that he knows what a beetle is only from his own. It would be quite possible for everyone to have something different in his box, or for the thing to keep changing, or for a box to be empty. The word “beetle” would go on being used all the same. The thing in the box, Wittgenstein says, “has no place in the language-game at all.” It drops out as irrelevant. If the meaning of “pain” were a private object that only I can inspect, the same would follow for pain. Since we plainly do talk about pain and understand one another, the word must get its meaning elsewhere, from the cries, the winces, the comforting, and the shared life in which it is used.
04Fixed by agreement 約定俗成
Chinese philosophers had argued about names for two centuries before the first empire. The logician Gongsun Long defended the claim that “a white horse is not a horse,” on the ground that “horse” names a shape and “white” a color, so that the two terms do not mean the same. Thinkers who wanted language to serve government found such puzzles dangerous. Xunzi replied with the clearest statement of conventionalism in the ancient world: “Names have no fixed rightness. They are fixed by agreement. When the agreement is settled and the custom formed, they are called right, and what departs from the agreement is called wrong.” A name is correct because a community uses it so. For Xunzi it follows that keeping names stable is a public duty, and that those who play with them unsettle everything built on them.
The Daoists drew the opposite lesson from the same fact. If names are our arrangement and nothing more, they cannot reach what was there before any arrangement. The Daodejing opens: “The name that can be named is not the constant name.” Zhuangzi put it as an image. “The fish trap exists for the sake of the fish. Once you have the fish, you can forget the trap. Words exist for the sake of meaning. Once you have the meaning, you can forget the words. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words, so that I can have a word with him?”
道家從同一個事實裡,引出了相反的教訓。如果名只是我們的安排、別無其他,它們就搆不到任何安排之前就已經在那裡的東西。《道德經》開頭就說:「名可名,非常名。」莊子把它說成一個意象:「荃者所以在魚,得魚而忘荃……言者所以在意,得意而忘言。吾安得夫忘言之人而與之言哉?」
05What use leaves open 「用法」沒有回答的
“Meaning is use” is closer to a direction for looking than to a theory, and it has costs. If a word means whatever a community does with it, it becomes hard to say how a whole community could use a word wrongly, and yet people once applied “fish” to whales. In the 1970s Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam argued that some words are tied to the world in a way that use does not capture. “Water” named a certain stuff long before anyone knew its chemistry, and what the word meant all along depended on what that stuff really is. Meanings, as Putnam put it, are not entirely in the head, and on his account they are not entirely in our practices either. The present view is a division of labor. Use and agreement explain most words, and the world itself helps to fix the meaning of some. Almost no one now defends the private image in the mind that Locke began with.

Augustine, Confessions, Book I, chapter 8; Xunzi, chapter 22, “Rectifying Names”; Zhuangzi, chapter 26 奧古斯丁《懺悔錄》卷一第八章;《荀子・正名》;《莊子・外物》 · Augustine translated by E. B. Pusey (public domain); Xunzi and Zhuangzi translated for this series
When they named any thing, and as they spoke turned towards it, I saw and remembered that they called what they would point out by the name they uttered. And that they meant this thing and no other was plain from the motion of their body, the natural language, as it were, of all nations, expressed by the countenance, glances of the eye, gestures of the limbs, and tones of the voice, indicating the affections of the mind, as it pursues, possesses, rejects, or shuns. And thus by constantly hearing words, as they occurred in various sentences, I collected gradually for what they stood.
Wittgenstein remarks that Augustine describes the learning of language as if the child already had a language and only lacked this one, as a foreigner would. Notice also how much of what Augustine reports is not pointing: faces, tones, pursuing and shunning. The passage contains the materials of Wittgenstein’s own view.
維根斯坦評論說:奧古斯丁描述學語言的方式,好像那個孩子已經有了一種語言,只是還不會這一種;就像一個外國人那樣。也請留意:奧古斯丁所記述的,有多少並不是「指」:臉、語調、追求與迴避。這段話裡,其實含著維根斯坦自己那個看法的材料。
Names have no fixed rightness. They are fixed by agreement. When the agreement is settled and the custom formed, they are called right, and what departs from the agreement is called wrong. Names have no fixed object. An object is fixed for them by agreement, and when the agreement is settled and the custom formed, they are called the names of those objects. The fish trap exists for the sake of the fish. Once you have the fish, you can forget the trap. The snare exists for the sake of the rabbit. Once you have the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words exist for the sake of meaning. Once you have the meaning, you can forget the words. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words, so that I can have a word with him?
名無固宜,約之以命,約定俗成謂之宜,異於約則謂之不宜。名無固實,約之以命實,約定俗成,謂之實名。 荃者所以在魚,得魚而忘荃。蹄者所以在兔,得兔而忘蹄。言者所以在意,得意而忘言。吾安得夫忘言之人而與之言哉?
Xunzi’s phrase 約定俗成, “fixed by agreement and formed by custom,” is still the ordinary Chinese expression for convention. Zhuangzi’s last sentence is a joke that makes his point: he needs words to say that he wants someone who is done with them.
荀子的「約定俗成」,至今仍是中文裡表示「慣例」的日常說法。莊子的最後一句是一個笑話,而它正好說明了他的意思:他需要用言語,才能說出他想找一個已經不需要言語的人。

Objections and replies 反駁與回應
If meaning is use, then to know the meaning of a word I would have to know every way it is ever used. No one does.
如果意義就是用法,那麼要知道一個字的意義,我就得知道它被使用的每一種方式。沒有人知道。
Knowing how to use a word is a skill, like knowing how to ride a bicycle, and skills come in degrees. A child who can ask for milk knows something of what “milk” means, and a dairy chemist knows more. Putnam added that we lean on one another. I can use “elm” correctly without being able to tell an elm from a beech, because others in my community can. He called this the division of linguistic labor.
知道怎麼用一個字是一種技能,就像知道怎麼騎腳踏車;而技能是有程度之分的。一個會要牛奶喝的孩子,知道一些「牛奶」的意思;一位乳品化學家知道得更多。普特南補充說:我們彼此倚靠。我分不出榆樹與山毛櫸,卻能正確地使用「榆樹」這個詞;因為我的社群裡有別人分得出來。他把這叫做「語言的分工」。
Xunzi’s view makes truth a matter of agreement. If we all agreed to call the deer a horse, it would be one.
荀子的看法使真理成了約定的事。如果我們全都同意把鹿叫做馬,牠就是馬了。
Convention fixes which sound goes with which kind of thing. It does not fix the facts about the thing. If we swapped the words, the sentence “that is a horse,” said of a deer, would become true, and the animal would still have antlers. Xunzi is clear on this. He says in the same chapter that names are made in order to point at realities and mark their differences. The story of the minister who called a deer a horse to see who would dare to contradict him is a story about power corrupting usage, and Xunzi’s demand that names be kept correct is aimed at exactly that.
Some things cannot be put into words at all. A theory that ties meaning to public use has no room for them.
有些東西根本無法用言語表達。一個把意義綁在公共用法上的理論,沒有位置給它們。
Wittgenstein agreed that there are such things and spent his early book marking the limit: “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.” The later view does not deny what Laozi and Zhuangzi say. It gives it a different description. Words are tools for shared activities, and where an experience is tied to no shared activity, the tools have nothing to grip. Much of the tradition of pointing, silence, paradox, and the fish trap can be read as a set of techniques for that situation.
維根斯坦同意有這樣的東西;而他早年的那本書,就是在標出那條界線:「凡是不可說的,就必須保持沉默。」後期的看法並不否認老子與莊子所說的。它給了另一種描述。字詞是用於共同活動的工具;當一種經驗不與任何共同的活動相連時,這些工具就沒有東西可以抓。指點、沉默、弔詭與「筌」的那個傳統,有很大一部分可以讀成一套針對這種處境的技巧。

Dharma and the West · 佛法與西方哲學
A view from the Dharma 佛法怎麼看
The Buddha treated words as tools and warned against two ways of misusing them. One discourse puts the rule briefly: “Don’t insist on popular definitions and don’t overstep normal labels.” The same thing, it explains, is called a cup in one district and a bowl, a jar, or a dish in others. A person who insists on his own word and says, “This is the only truth, anything else is futile,” has made the first mistake. The right course is to speak as the people there speak, thinking, “It seems that the venerables are referring to this.” The second mistake is to throw away ordinary usage because one has seen through it. The Buddha held that words like “I” and “person” name nothing lasting, and he went on using them. A verse says of the awakened that “skillful, understanding the world’s labels, they’d use these terms as mere expressions.”
This is close to Wittgenstein and goes a step beyond him. Both hold that a word has meaning through its use in a shared practice and that trouble starts when we take the word to name a hidden thing. For Wittgenstein the trouble is philosophical confusion. For the Buddha it is suffering. To hear “I” and suppose a fixed owner of experience behind it is, in his analysis, the root of craving and fear. The later tradition made this into a doctrine. Things exist as dependent designations: “chariot” is a name applied to wheels, axle, and frame, and “person” a name applied to body and mind, and neither names an extra thing (Dharma and Western Philosophy D3). Zhuangzi’s fish trap has its Buddhist twins in the raft that is left on the shore and the finger that points at the moon.
