Can a Copy Be as Good as the Original?

The most admired piece of Chinese calligraphy has not been seen for thirteen hundred years, and a forger once fooled every expert in Holland. What a copy lacks, if it lacks anything, with Goodman, Benjamin, the Ise shrine, and eight cases for you to judge.

The big idea ·

This lesson closes the unit on beauty and art. If the value of a work lay only in how it looks or sounds, a perfect copy would be worth exactly as much as the original. Almost no one believes that it is, and almost no one finds it easy to say why.

Can a Copy Be as Good as the Original?

01A masterpiece no one has seen

In the spring of 353 CE the calligrapher Wang Xizhi met forty-one friends at the Orchid Pavilion near Shaoxing. They floated cups of wine down a stream and wrote poems, and Wang wrote a preface for the collection on the spot, 324 characters in running script. Tradition says that he tried later to write it out again and could not equal the first version. It became the most famous piece of writing in China. Three centuries afterward the Tang emperor Taizong acquired the scroll, had copies made for his ministers, and, according to an account written in the following century, had it sealed in his tomb when he died in 649.

No one has seen it since. What every student of calligraphy has studied for thirteen hundred years is a set of copies: tracings made at the Tang court, free copies by the great calligraphers of the day, and rubbings from stone engravings of those. The one thought closest to the original is a tracing attributed to the court copyist Feng Chengsu. The work that sets the standard for the whole art is known only through reproductions, and the tradition has not felt this as a scandal.

02The forger who fooled Holland

European painting had the opposite experience. In 1937 a newly discovered Vermeer, The Supper at Emmaus, was bought for a Rotterdam museum. Abraham Bredius, the leading authority on Dutch painting, had called it the masterpiece of Vermeer. It had been painted the year before by Han van Meegeren, an artist whom the critics had dismissed. He used old canvas and pigments of the period and hardened his paint with a synthetic resin so that it would pass the tests for age. More “Vermeers” followed, and one was sold during the war to Hermann Göring.

After the war van Meegeren was arrested for selling a national treasure to the enemy, a crime that could carry the death penalty. He saved himself by confessing to a lesser one. The Vermeer was his own work, he said, and he painted another in custody to prove it. He was sentenced to a year for forgery and died before serving it. The paintings had not changed by a single brushstroke. Their price fell to almost nothing, and the experts who had wept in front of them now found them clumsy. The case raises the question of what, exactly, had changed.

03If you cannot see the difference

One answer is that nothing of aesthetic importance changed. If beauty lies in what can be seen, and two pictures cannot be told apart, they are equally beautiful. The collapse in price shows only that buyers pay for names, rarity, and the right to boast. On this view the experts were right the first time and are snobs now.

Nelson Goodman replied in 1968 that “cannot be told apart” hides a question. Apart by whom, and when? That I cannot see a difference today does not show that I never will. Knowing that one of two pictures is a forgery gives me a reason to look for differences and trains my eye, and once Vermeer’s real paintings and van Meegeren’s were hung side by side the forgeries came to look obviously of the 1930s. Goodman added a distinction that explains why the question arises for some arts and not for others. A novel or a symphony is defined by a text or a score, and any correct copy is the work itself. He called these arts allographic. A painting has no such notation. Its identity depends on the history of its making, on its having come from a particular hand. He called these autographic, and only they can be forged.

04Here and now 此時此地

Walter Benjamin, writing in exile in 1935, gave the missing quality a name. Even the most perfect reproduction, he said, lacks one thing: the work’s presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it is. He called this its aura. An original has been through things. It was touched by its maker, has aged, changed hands, and hung in particular rooms, and all this history is present to a person who stands before it. Photography and film, he saw, were producing art that has no original at all, since it makes no sense to ask for the authentic print of a negative. Benjamin thought the result a loss and also a liberation. Art that can be copied without limit belongs to everyone and is no longer an object of worship.

A later writer, Denis Dutton, put the point in terms of achievement. A work of art is the trace of something a person did. When we admire the Lanting Preface we admire what Wang Xizhi brought off in one morning, with wine in him, and no chance to correct. A forgery lies about what was achieved. Van Meegeren did not solve the problems Vermeer solved in 1660. He solved the easier problem of imitating the solutions three centuries later, and it is this false claim, more than any visible fault, that makes the forgery worth less.

05Copying as a way of keeping

Dutton’s account also explains why the Tang tracings of the Lanting are treasures. They make no false claim. Feng Chengsu’s achievement was fidelity, and everyone knows it. Chinese connoisseurs kept four words apart: to trace, to copy freehand, to work in someone’s manner, and to fabricate. Only the last deceives. Xie He had listed “transmission by copying” as the sixth principle of painting, and every calligrapher still learns by copying models stroke by stroke. In this tradition a good copy is how a work survives the loss of its paper.

Japan’s Ise shrine carries the idea further. Its wooden halls have been taken down and rebuilt on the adjoining plot every twenty years for some thirteen centuries. No timber in them is old, and the shrine is counted among the oldest in the country. What is preserved is the form, the craft, and the unbroken act of rebuilding. Whether the same holds for a painting depends on what one thinks a work of art is: an object, a design, or something done. Wang Xizhi ended his preface by imagining its future readers: “Those who come after will look on us as we now look on the past.” He did not expect the paper to last, and it has not. The words and the gesture have reached us through people who cared enough to copy them.

Wang Xizhi, Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection (353 CE), closing lines; Liu Su, “Record of the Orchid Pavilion,” in Fine Tales of Sui and Tang (8th century) 王羲之〈蘭亭集序〉結尾;劉餗〈蘭亭記〉(見《隋唐嘉話》) · Both translated for this series

Whenever I read what moved the people of the past, and find it fitting my own feeling like the two halves of a tally, I cannot help sighing over their words, and I cannot explain it to myself. I know for certain that to treat life and death as one is empty talk, and that to call the long-lived and the short-lived equal is a fabrication. Those who come after will look on us as we now look on the past. How sad it is! So I have listed the people who were here and recorded what they wrote. Though the times will differ and things will change, what stirs the heart is one and the same. Those who read this later will also be moved by these words.

Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection

The passage answers Zhuangzi, who had argued that life and death are one. Wang, at a party in spring, refuses the consolation. The irony he could not have foreseen is that these lines about being read by later ages are known to us only in the hands of the copyists who came after.

When Taizong was Prince of Qin he saw a tracing of it and was astonished and delighted. He offered a high price for the Orchid Pavilion in the Great Wang’s own hand, and it did not come. […] In the tenth year of Zhenguan he had ten copies traced and gave them to his close ministers. When Taizong died, the secretariat director Chu Suiliang memorialized: “The Orchid Pavilion was what the late emperor prized. It must not be kept back.” And so it was hidden away in the Zhao Mausoleum.

Liu Su, Record of the Orchid Pavilion

The better-known version, in which the emperor’s agent tricks an old monk out of the scroll, is a later and more colorful story. In this one a copy comes first: what made the emperor want the original was a tracing. The Zhao Mausoleum has never been opened by archaeologists.

Objections and replies

Objection 1 · 反駁

“Aura” is a polite word for superstition. To care which lump of matter Leonardo touched is to treat paintings as relics of saints.

Reply · 回應

Benjamin half agreed. He traced aura to the religious use of images and thought its decline a gain for democracy. But the feeling is too widespread to be dismissed. People keep a parent’s handwriting and would not exchange it for a scan. Psychologists find that young children already prefer their own toy to an exact duplicate. Caring about the particular thing with its particular past seems to be part of how humans value, and a theory of art should explain it before correcting it.

Objection 2 · 反駁

The Chinese acceptance of copies shows that the whole problem is a product of the European art market.

Reply · 回應

The market sharpened the problem. It did not create it. Chinese collectors paid vastly more for a genuine hand than for a copy, wrote treatises on telling them apart, and were cheated by forgers in every dynasty. What differs is the place given to the honest copy. In China it was a recognized form with its own masters. In Europe after the Renaissance it was a student exercise. The philosophical question of what a copy lacks is the same in both, and the Chinese answer, that it lacks nothing so long as it does not lie, is one of the better ones.

Objection 3 · 反駁

With digital files the question disappears. Every copy of a photograph or a song is identical, and there is no original.

Reply · 回應

Benjamin predicted this of film. What has happened since is instructive. People have gone to great lengths to bring originals back: numbered prints, signed copies, and digital certificates of ownership for images that anyone can download. This suggests that the wish for a unique object with a history is strong enough to be manufactured where the medium does not supply it, which counts for Benjamin’s view of what we value and against his hope that we would stop.

Dharma and the West ·

A view from the Dharma

The Buddhist tradition began with a decision about originals. The Buddha wrote nothing. After his death the monks met and recited what they remembered, and for some four hundred years the teaching existed only in memory and voice, passed from teacher to student. There was never an autograph, and no one felt the lack of one. When the texts were finally written down, copying them became a practice in its own right. A person who copies a sutra by hand is thought to gain by the attention the copying takes, and the tradition has not valued an old manuscript over a new one for its doctrine. In Goodman’s terms the Dharma is as allographic as anything could be. What counts is that the content has been passed on correctly. The teaching itself warns against attachment to the vehicle. It is a raft for crossing over, and a finger pointing at the moon.

The same tradition also knows the pull that Benjamin called aura, and has made careful use of it. Relics, the tree at Bodh Gaya grown from cuttings of cuttings, a robe or a bowl handed down through a line of teachers: all are valued for their history. The Chan image for transmission is one lamp lighting another. The second flame is not the first, and it is not a copy of the first either. The question whether it is the same flame is treated as badly put. This suggests a way of thinking about the Lanting. What Wang Xizhi did in 353 is gone, as every conditioned thing goes. What has come down is a line of people each of whom took up the brush and made it present again, and in each of them it was real (Dharma and Western Philosophy D3).
