The lesson on personal identity asked what makes you the same person over time. This one asks an earlier question: whether there is, at any one moment, a subject who has your experiences, or only the experiences.

Is There a Self at All?

01The search 尋找

In 1739 a Scotsman of twenty-seven published the result of an experiment that anyone can repeat. Philosophers, David Hume observed, say that we are at every moment conscious of what we call our self, and certain of its perfect identity and simplicity. He decided to look. “For my part, when I enter most intimately into what I call myself, I always stumble on some particular perception or other, of heat or cold, light or shade, love or hatred, pain or pleasure. I never can catch myself at any time without a perception, and never can observe any thing but the perception.” If someone else thinks he has a different notion of himself, Hume adds, “I must confess I can reason no longer with him.” Setting aside such metaphysicians, he ventures to say of the rest of mankind that they are nothing but a bundle or collection of different perceptions, which succeed one another with inconceivable rapidity.

02A theater with no stage

Hume offered an image and at once withdrew half of it. “The mind is a kind of theatre, where several perceptions successively make their appearance; pass, re-pass, glide away, and mingle in an infinite variety of postures and situations.” Then: “The comparison of the theatre must not mislead us. They are the successive perceptions only, that constitute the mind; nor have we the most distant notion of the place, where these scenes are represented.” There is a performance. There is no stage on which it happens and no one in the stalls. This is the difference between Hume and Descartes, who had made the same inward turn a century earlier and reported finding a thing that thinks. Hume’s reply is that Descartes found thinking and added the thing.

03The king and the monk

The same conclusion had been defended in debate nineteen centuries before, and the record survives in Pali and in Chinese. Around 150 BCE a Greek king named Menander ruled a realm in what is now Afghanistan and Pakistan, one of the states left behind by Alexander’s conquests. Indian tradition calls him Milinda. He liked to argue with holy men, and one day he called on a Buddhist monk and asked his name. “I am known as Nāgasena,” said the monk, but that is “only a generally understood term, a designation in common use,” and no permanent individual is involved in the matter. The king saw the difficulty immediately. If there is no Nāgasena, who receives the robes and the food? Who keeps the precepts, and who breaks them? If a man killed you, there would be no murder.

He then conducts Hume’s search aloud. Is the hair Nāgasena? The nails, the teeth, the skin, the heart, the brain? Is it the body, or the feelings, or the perceptions, or the impulses, or the consciousness? All of them together? Something apart from them? To each question the monk answers no. “Then thus, ask as I may, I can discover no Nāgasena. Nāgasena is a mere empty sound.” The monk asks how the king traveled there. In a chariot. Then what is the chariot? Is it the pole, the axle, the wheels, the frame, the yoke? All these together? Something apart from them? Now it is the king who must say no each time, and the monk who announces to the applauding crowd that there is no chariot and the king has told a lie. The king’s answer, and the point of the dialogue, are in the exercise below.

04A hundred joints and no ruler

Zhuangzi carries out the same inventory in three sentences. “The hundred joints, the nine openings, the six organs are all present and complete. Which of them should I feel closest to? Are you pleased with them all, or is there one you favor? Are they all servants? Then can servants not keep one another in order? Or do they take turns as ruler and subject?” He draws a conclusion that is more guarded than Hume’s. “It seems as though there were a true ruler, and yet we find no trace of him.” Something makes joy and anger arise, day and night, and “no one knows from where they sprout.” He does not deny that anything governs. He reports that the governor cannot be found, and he lets the matter rest there.

05Who is looking?

The most serious reply to Hume came from Kant, who had been, he said, awakened by him. Hume describes himself as searching, stumbling on perceptions, failing to catch anything further. Who is this “I” that searches and fails? A heap of perceptions cannot look through itself and notice that something is missing. For there to be experience at all, Kant argued, the perceptions must be capable of being brought together as mine: “The ‘I think’ must accompany all my representations,” or they would be nothing to me. So the unity of the self is not one more item to be found on the stage. It is the condition of there being a stage. But Kant refused to give the old view its victory. From this unity, he said, nothing follows about what I am. It is a form that every experience must have, and it tells us no more about an underlying soul than the frame tells us about the painter.

06Why it feels as though someone is home

If Hume is right, a stubborn appearance needs explaining. The brain sciences have added three pieces. No place has been found in the brain where everything comes together for a single observer, and processing is spread over many regions working at once. Patients whose hemispheres have been surgically separated will act on an instruction shown only to the mute right half and then, when asked why, give a fluent explanation that the speaking half has invented on the spot. The talking part of us appears to be a commentator who takes itself for the author. And the sense of owning a body can be moved: in a well-known experiment, people who watch a rubber hand being stroked while their own hidden hand is stroked in time come to feel the touch in the rubber one.

Daniel Dennett proposed that the self is like a center of gravity. Every object has one, and engineers cannot do without it, yet nobody expects to find it by cutting the object open. It is an abstraction that lets us summarize how a complicated thing will behave. A self, on this view, is the center of the story a brain tells in order to hold a life together. The German philosopher Thomas Metzinger says that the brain builds a model of the organism and cannot recognize the model as a model, so that we look through it as through a window and take ourselves to be what it shows.

07Hume’s labyrinth

Hume was the first to see that his account was incomplete. A year after the first volumes of the Treatise he added an appendix in which he reviews his section on the self and writes: “I find myself involved in such a labyrinth, that, I must confess, I neither know how to correct my former opinions, nor how to render them consistent.” If perceptions are distinct existences, something must explain why these ones belong together as one mind and are not scattered among many, and he could find nothing that does. He never returned to the subject. The puzzle he left has three parts, and every later theory is an attempt at one of them. Something makes experience unified at a moment. Something makes it seem owned. And something makes the thought “there is no self” so hard to feel, even for someone who is sure it is true.

None of this abolishes the person who signs your letters. Nāgasena went on answering to his name. The claim is that the name refers to a great many things working together, and that our habit of picturing one small owner inside them is a picture and nothing more. What follows from the claim is taken up on another shelf.

The text was composed in northwest India around the beginning of the common era and exists in a Pali version and two Chinese ones. The Chinese under each passage is a modern rendering of the English.

The Questions of King Milinda (Milindapañha), Book II, chapter 1 《彌蘭王問經》;漢譯《那先比丘經》 · tr. T. W. Rhys Davids, 1890 (public domain)

If, most reverend Nāgasena, there be no permanent individuality (no soul) involved in the matter, who is it, pray, who gives to you members of the Order your robes and food and lodging and necessaries for the sick? Who is it who enjoys such things when given? Who is it who lives a life of righteousness? Who is it who devotes himself to meditation? … If that be so there is neither merit nor demerit; there is neither doer nor causer of good or evil deeds.

Milindapañha II.1.1 (the king’s objection)

The king is no fool. Before any metaphor is offered he states the strongest objection to the doctrine, and it is a moral one: responsibility seems to need someone to bear it. The lesson on personal identity met the same worry in Locke, who called “person” a forensic term. Notice that Nāgasena never answers by saying that there is, after all, a doer. He answers by explaining what kind of thing the word “Nāgasena” is.

‘I have spoken no untruth, reverend Sir. It is on account of its having all these things—the pole, and the axle, the wheels, and the framework, the ropes, the yoke, the spokes, and the goad—that it comes under the generally understood term, the designation in common use, of “chariot.”’ ‘Very good! Your Majesty has rightly grasped the meaning of “chariot.” And just even so it is on account of all those things you questioned me about… that I come under the generally understood term, the designation in common use, of “Nāgasena.”’

Milindapañha II.1.1 (the answer)

The king says “I have spoken no untruth,” and that is the hinge. It is true that he came in a chariot, and it is true that there is no chariot over and above the parts. Buddhist philosophers later named the two levels conventional and ultimate truth. The older Chinese translation puts the conclusion with great economy: “Bring these timbers together to make a chariot, and thereby there is a chariot. So it is with a person.” In the Chinese version the king, asked what the chariot is, “falls silent and does not speak” (王默然不語), and the monk supplies the answer himself.

Both sides ·

Objections and replies

Objection 1 · 反駁

The search is rigged. A self is the subject of experience and so cannot turn up among its objects, any more than an eye can appear in its own field of view.

Reply · 回應

This is the reply of Kant and, long before him, of the Upanishads. It concedes Hume’s finding and disputes what follows. The difficulty is to say anything more about this subject. If it has no observable features, we cannot know that it is one and the same from moment to moment, or that it is mine and not shared, or that it is a thing and not a feature of how experience is organized. Kant accepted all of this, which is why his “I think” is a form and no longer a soul.

Objection 2 · 反駁

The denial defeats itself. To say “I find no self” is to use the word “I.” Someone must be doing the denying.

Reply · 回應

The objection shows that English requires a subject for its verbs. Georg Lichtenberg, a contemporary of Kant, suggested that Descartes should have said “it thinks,” as we say “it rains,” where nobody supposes that an “it” is doing the raining. Nāgasena makes the same move with his name. He goes on saying “I” and answering to “Nāgasena,” and holds that the usage is correct and convenient and commits him to nothing beyond the parts working together.

Objection 3 · 反駁

If no one is there, no one deserves praise or blame, and no one is harmed by cruelty.

Reply · 回應

This is Milinda’s objection, and it mistakes the claim. Pain occurs whether or not it has an owner, and it is as bad as it ever was. What the view removes is the idea of an inner proprietor in addition to the pain. Responsibility likewise attaches to a continuous stream of intention and action, as it does in a court of law, where no one inquires about souls. Later in the same book Nāgasena says that the one who is reborn is neither the same as nor different from the one who died, as milk is neither the same as nor different from the curds it becomes.

Dharma and the West ·

A view from the Dharma

This lesson has been half Buddhist already, since the chariot is the tradition’s own illustration. Two things may be added. Nāgasena’s list is not random. When the king has finished with hair and bones he asks about five things in turn: form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness. These are the five aggregates, the scheme by which the Buddha sorted everything a person might take to be a self. Hume searched without a map and reported “some particular perception or other.” The Buddhist searcher is handed a map with five regions and told to examine each.

The second point is the purpose. Hume found his result disturbing, shut the study door, and went to play backgammon. In the Buddhist texts the same result is the beginning of freedom, because the search is undertaken in order to stop clinging to what is found. A companion page takes up the map itself: what the five aggregates are, and which Western account of the mind comes closest to them.
