Are We Born Knowing Anything?
Plato’s slave boy, Locke’s white paper, Mencius’s child, and the long quarrel between reason and experience over where knowledge comes from.
Experience supplies the content of what we know, and yet a mind with nothing in it could not learn from experience at all. The live question is how much structure a mind must bring.

Are We Born Knowing Anything?
01Where does it come from?
A newborn can do very little, and within five years the same child speaks a language, recognizes faces, counts, and has firm opinions about what is fair. Where did all of that come from? There seem to be only two possible sources. It was put in from outside, by the senses and by teaching, or it was in some form there already. The first answer is called empiricism and the second rationalism or, in its modern form, nativism. The dispute between them is the oldest in the theory of knowledge, and it is unusual among philosophical disputes because experiments now bear on it.
02The boy and the square
The first great argument for inborn knowledge is a demonstration. In Plato’s Meno, Socrates calls over a household slave, a boy who has never been taught geometry, draws a square in the sand, and asks him how long the side of a square twice as large would be. The boy answers confidently and wrongly, twice. Socrates then draws a few more lines and goes on asking questions, and the boy arrives at the correct answer, which is a hard one. Socrates insists that he told the boy nothing. “Without any one teaching him he will recover his knowledge for himself, if he is only asked questions.”
Plato’s explanation is that the soul existed before birth and learned everything then, so that “all enquiry and all learning is but recollection.” Few people have accepted the explanation. The demonstration is harder to dismiss. The boy did not learn the theorem by measuring squares, and once he sees it he sees that it must be so. Truths of that kind, known independently of experience, are called a priori, and they are the rationalist’s best evidence.
03White paper 白紙
The classic statement of the other side is John Locke’s, in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690). “Let us then suppose the mind to be, as we say, white paper, void of all characters, without any ideas:—How comes it to be furnished?” His answer is one word: “from EXPERIENCE.” Experience has two channels. Sensation gives us ideas of yellow, hot, hard, and sweet. Reflection, the mind’s notice of its own operations, gives us ideas of thinking, doubting, and willing. Every other idea, however abstract, is built by combining and comparing these.
Locke had an argument as well as a picture. If any principles were stamped on the mind at birth, he said, everyone would be aware of them, and children plainly are not aware of the laws of logic. He also had a motive. Claims of innate truth had been used to put favored doctrines beyond question, and a mind that begins blank has to be given reasons.
04Veins in the marble
Leibniz read Locke’s Essay and wrote a book-length reply. He granted that nothing is in the intellect which was not first in the senses, and added three words: except the intellect itself. Locke had taken “innate” to mean “consciously present from birth,” which is easy to refute. The serious claim is that the mind has built-in tendencies. It is less like blank paper, Leibniz said, than like a block of marble with veins in it. The sculptor’s blows are needed to bring the figure out, and the veins make it easier to carve one figure than another. Experience is the occasion of our knowledge of necessary truths. It cannot be the source of their necessity, since no number of observed cases shows that a thing must be so.
05The child who loves his parents
In China the same question was asked about morality. Mencius, in the fourth century BCE, held that the beginnings of goodness are part of our original equipment. “What people are able to do without having learned it is their innate ability; what they know without having to reflect is their innate knowledge (良知). There are no young children who do not know to love their parents.” Humaneness and rightness, he says elsewhere, “are not welded onto us from outside; we have them from the start.” He did not think that this made anyone good automatically. The beginnings are sprouts, and a sprout that is neglected dies. His opponent Xunzi argued that goodness is the product of deliberate effort and ritual training imposed on a nature that would otherwise run to conflict. Leibniz’s marble and Locke’s paper had been set against each other, on moral ground, two thousand years before either man was born.
06Kant’s settlement
A century after Locke, Immanuel Kant proposed terms of peace. “Though all our knowledge begins with experience,” he wrote, “it by no means follows that all arises out of experience.” The senses supply the material. The mind supplies the form in which any material must be arranged in order to be experienced at all: it places things in space and time and connects them as cause and effect. We are not born knowing any facts, on this view. We are born with the framework that makes facts available to us. Whether Kant identified the right framework is disputed. That some framework is needed is now close to common ground.
07What the laboratory says
Three lines of research have changed the debate. Infants only a few months old look longer at events that break the rules of solid objects, which suggests that they expect objects to persist and not to pass through one another. Children acquire grammar from a small and messy sample of speech, a fact Noam Chomsky called the poverty of the stimulus and took as proof of an inborn language faculty. And a question that the Irish scientist William Molyneux put to Locke in 1688 has been tested. Would a man born blind, who knew a cube and a sphere by touch, recognize them by sight alone if he were suddenly able to see? Locke said no. In 2011 researchers in India examined children just after surgery for congenital blindness. They could not match what they saw to what they felt, and they learned to do it within days.
That result is a fair picture of where things stand. The newly sighted children had no ready-made knowledge linking sight to touch, as Locke predicted. They acquired it far faster than blank paper could, as Leibniz would have predicted. Neither side has been proved simply right. What has faded is the old either-or.
08Why it matters to a teacher
The question was never only academic. If the mind is white paper, education is everything, and differences among people are differences in what has been written on them. Locke drew that conclusion, and it has been a great engine of reform. If the mind has veins, a teacher’s task is to find them and work with them, which is what Socrates did in the sand. Each view has its danger. The first tempts us to think that children can be made into anything. The second tempts us to read our expectations into their nature. Mencius’s image may be the wisest of the three, since a sprout has a nature of its own and still has to be tended. He warns against the farmer who, impatient with his slow crop, went out and pulled on the shoots to help them grow.
Thought experiment ·
Try it: double the square
This is the problem Socrates set the boy, with the same wrong turnings. You will not be told the answer. Watch what the questions do, and decide afterward whether you were taught or reminded.
A second experiment
Molyneux’s question (1688): a man born blind knows a cube and a sphere by touch. He is made to see. Before touching them, can he tell by sight which is which?
Leibniz said yes, given time to reason: a sphere has no corners and a cube has eight, and that structure is the same for sight and touch.
Locke and Molyneux said no: he has not yet learned which look goes with which feel.
The test was finally run in 2011, on children in India who had just had surgery for congenital blindness. They could not match the seen object to the felt one, performing near chance. Within about a week they could. The connection is learned, as Locke said, and learned remarkably fast, which suggests that the mind was prepared for it.

Primary text · 原典
In their own words
Two short passages, one from each side, written two thousand years apart.
John Locke, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690); Plato, Meno 洛克《人類理解論》;柏拉圖《美諾篇》 · Locke in the original English; Plato translated by Benjamin Jowett (both public domain)
Let us then suppose the mind to be, as we say, white paper, void of all characters, without any ideas:—How comes it to be furnished? … Whence has it all the MATERIALS of reason and knowledge? To this I answer, in one word, from EXPERIENCE.
Two words deserve attention. The first is “suppose”: Locke offers the white paper as a hypothesis to be tested by how much it can explain. The second is “materials.” He says that experience supplies the materials of knowledge. He does not say that it supplies the mind’s ability to work on them, and elsewhere he takes that ability for granted. (“Characters” here means written marks, and “whence” means “from where.”)
…for as all nature is akin, and the soul has learned all things; there is no difficulty in her eliciting or as men say learning, out of a single recollection all the rest, if a man is strenuous and does not faint; for all enquiry and all learning is but recollection.
The phrase to notice is “as all nature is akin.” Plato’s claim is that knowledge forms a connected whole, so that recovering one piece gives a hold on the rest. That part of the doctrine does not depend on a previous life, and anyone who has watched a student suddenly see how two topics fit together will recognize it. Note also the moral: “if a man is strenuous.” The theory was offered to Meno as a reason not to give up inquiring.
Both sides ·
Objections and replies
The slave boy proves nothing. Socrates asks leading questions and draws the crucial figure himself. The boy was taught, by a very good teacher.
The objection is fair as far as the discovery goes: the boy would not have found the diagonal alone. But Plato’s point concerns what happens next. When the figure is drawn, the boy does not take the answer on trust. He sees for himself that it is right and could not be otherwise. That act of seeing was not supplied by the teacher, and it is what needs explaining.
Talk of innate ideas is dangerous. It has always been used to declare some people naturally superior and some beliefs beyond criticism.
This was part of Locke’s motive, and the history bears him out. The reply is that the blank slate has been abused as well, by regimes that believed human beings could be remade to order. A doctrine’s political uses do not settle whether it is true. They are a reason to be careful about which claims of innateness we accept, and to demand evidence for each.
The whole debate rests on a false choice. Asking whether knowledge comes from nature or from experience is like asking whether the area of a rectangle comes from its length or its width.
Most researchers would now agree, and Kant said something similar. But the particular questions remain open and are worth asking one at a time. How much of grammar is built in? Is there an inborn sense of number, of fairness, of cause? “Both” is the right general answer, and it tells us nothing about any particular case.

Dharma and the West ·
A view from the Dharma
Buddhist thought contains both positions, and adds a third that neither Locke nor Leibniz considered. The empiricist strand is early and strong. Asked to define “the all,” the Buddha lists the eye and forms, the ear and sounds, the nose and odors, the tongue and tastes, the body and tangibles, the mind and mental objects, and says that anyone who claims to describe another “all” beyond these is speaking of what lies outside his range (Saṃyutta Nikāya 35.23). Knowledge begins from contact at the six sense bases, and mind is counted as a sixth sense, which is not far from Locke’s sensation and reflection.
The other strand resembles Mencius. An early text says that the mind is luminous and is defiled by visiting defilements (Aṅguttara Nikāya 1.49). The Mahāyāna doctrine of buddha-nature develops the thought: awakening is not manufactured, it is uncovered. When Huineng awakens in the Platform Sūtra he exclaims, “Who would have thought that my own nature is complete in itself from the beginning!” And the third position comes from rebirth. On the Buddhist account a newborn is not a blank, because it arrives carrying dispositions (vāsanā) laid down by earlier action. This is Plato’s answer, experience before birth, with one difference. What is carried over consists of habits and tendencies, good and bad, and includes no knowledge of eternal truths (Dharma and the West, D12).
