Life · 生平

A life in three scenes

A citizen of Athens

Socrates was born around 470 BCE, when Athens was becoming the richest and most confident city in Greece. His father, Sophroniscus, is said to have worked in stone; his mother, Phaenarete, was a midwife, a fact Plato later turned into a metaphor. He was not rich and not handsome. His friends compared him to a satyr: snub nose, bulging eyes, the same old cloak in every season, and no shoes.

He served as a heavy infantryman in three campaigns of the long war with Sparta, at Potidaea, Delium, and Amphipolis. The young aristocrat Alcibiades, whose life he saved at Potidaea, reported that Socrates endured cold and hunger better than anyone and walked off the lost field at Delium so calmly that no enemy cared to approach him.

The oracle and the marketplace

At his trial Socrates explained how his odd career began. His friend Chaerephon had asked the oracle at Delphi whether anyone was wiser than Socrates, and the priestess had answered that no one was. Socrates, aware of having “no wisdom, small or great,” set out to refute the god by finding a wiser man. He questioned politicians, poets, and craftsmen, and found that each believed he knew things he did not. He concluded that the oracle meant something modest: he was wiser only in not mistaking his ignorance for knowledge.

From then on he spent his days in the agora and the gymnasia, questioning anyone who would stop. He charged no fee, which set him apart from the professional teachers called sophists, and he denied that he taught anything at all. He compared himself to a gadfly sent to sting a large and sluggish horse, and to a midwife who helps others deliver ideas while having none of her own.

Trial and death

Athens lost the war in 404 BCE and endured a brutal oligarchy, the Thirty, several of whose leaders had once kept company with Socrates. Socrates himself had defied them: ordered to arrest an innocent man, Leon of Salamis, he simply went home. Democracy was restored the next year, and in 399 three citizens, Meletus, Anytus, and Lycon, brought him to court. The charge, in Plato’s wording, was that he “corrupts the youth” and “does not believe in the gods of the state, but has other new divinities of his own.”

A jury of several hundred citizens found him guilty by a narrow margin; had thirty votes gone the other way, he says, he would have been acquitted. Asked to propose his own penalty, he suggested free meals at public expense, then a small fine. The jury chose death. He refused a chance to escape, arguing that a citizen who has accepted the laws all his life may not break them when they turn against him, and a month later he drank the hemlock among his friends. In Plato’s account his last words were a reminder to pay a debt: “Crito, we owe a cock to Asclepius.”

The central idea ·

Knowing what you do not know 知道自己不知道

Before Socrates, Greek thinkers had mostly asked what the world is made of. Socrates asked how to live, and he asked it in a new way. He assumed that anyone who is good at something can say what he is doing. A doctor can explain health; a brave man ought to be able to explain courage. When the explanation collapses under questioning, the person’s confidence has been shown to rest on nothing, and the search can start.

Behind the method lies a bold thesis, usually called Socratic intellectualism: virtue is a kind of knowledge. If you really knew what was good for you, you would do it; so no one does wrong willingly, and all wrongdoing is a form of ignorance. That is why examining beliefs was, for him, a moral task and not an academic one.

…the unexamined life is not worth living………
Plato, Apology 38a, tr. Jowett
Spoken after the guilty verdict, to explain why he would not accept exile on condition of silence.

The strongest objection ·

Weakness of will 意志薄弱

If virtue is knowledge, it should be impossible to know what is best and do otherwise. Yet this seems to happen every day: the smoker knows, the procrastinator knows. The Greeks called it akrasia, lack of self-mastery. Aristotle, who admired Socrates, said bluntly that the Socratic view is at odds with what we plainly observe (Nicomachean Ethics VII.2).

A Socratic can reply that the smoker does not fully know: at the moment of choice the nearer pleasure looks larger than it is, the way a nearby object looks bigger than a distant one, and what he lacks is an art of measuring (Protagoras 356c–357b). Whether that reply rescues the thesis or merely redefines “knowledge” is still disputed.

How we know · 史料

The Socratic problem

Because Socrates wrote nothing, everything we know comes through others, and they do not agree. Aristophanes, writing while Socrates was alive, shows a ridiculous charlatan in a basket. Xenophon shows a sensible moral adviser. Plato shows a philosophical genius, and he keeps using “Socrates” as a character for decades, long after the views expressed have become Plato’s own. Scholars usually treat the early, short dialogues that end in aporia (Apology, Euthyphro, Laches) as closest to the historical man, and admit that this is a judgment and not a certainty.

Dharma and the West ·

Socrates and the Buddha

The two were near contemporaries and never heard of each other. Both wrote nothing, taught by conversation, took no fee, and were remembered through dialogues composed by followers. Both held that the root of going wrong is a kind of ignorance: for Socrates, not knowing what is good; for the Buddha, avijjā, not seeing things as they are.

The difference shows in the remedy. For Socrates the cure is argument, and he seems to think that seeing the truth is enough to act on it. The Buddhist path adds training of attention and conduct, on the view that craving does not dissolve merely because one has reached a correct conclusion. That is, in effect, a Buddhist answer to the problem of akrasia.
