What Makes Jazz Sound Like Jazz?

Slide one number and watch every off-beat note move later. Hear the same tune straight and swung, and play along with a small band.

Sound stays off until you press the button, and it starts quiet. If you hear nothing on an iPhone, check the silent switch.

Big idea ·

Swing comes from dividing each beat unevenly: the first eighth note is longer and the second is shorter. The beat itself stays steady.

Slide the Swing

We wrote one short tune of four bars, with a simple bass line and a hi-hat. Press play, then drag the swing ratio. The orange notes are the off-beat eighth notes: they are the only ones that move. The tempo and the pitches never change. This is our own simple model, not a recording of any jazz band.

Unit 14: What Makes Jazz Sound Like Jazz?

Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But jazz did not begin as a single musical tradition in New Orleans or elsewhere. It is difficult to define, because it includes a wide range of music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response, polyrhythms, and improvisation.

In swing rhythm the pulse is divided unequally. The first note of each pair of eighth notes is lengthened, and the second is shortened. The first note is often understood to be twice as long as the second, a triplet feel, a ratio of 2:1. But in practice the ratio is often much more subtle. In jazz, the swing ratio typically lies somewhere between 1:1 and 3:1, and can vary considerably. It tends to be wider at slower tempos and narrower at faster ones.

A typical jazz group has a rhythm section, which provides the underlying rhythm, harmony, and pulse. The standard rhythm section is piano, bass, and drums. A soloist, or a horn section of woodwinds and brass, plays the melody on top. The bass often plays a walking bass line: unsyncopated notes of equal value, usually quarter notes, like the regular steps of someone walking.

Improvisation is one of jazz’s defining elements. Jazz improvisation is the spontaneous invention of melodic solo lines or accompaniment parts in a performance. It is usually done over a chord progression, so it is not random. For example, the twelve-bar blues is based on the I, IV, and V chords of a key. And not all jazz is improvised: swing-era big bands relied more on arrangements that were written or memorized, and the soloists improvised within them.

Two more ingredients are blue notes and call and response. A blue note is sung or played at a slightly different pitch from standard, typically between a quartertone and a semitone. Call and response is a succession of two distinct phrases that works like a conversation in music: one musician offers a phrase, and a second answers. Syncopation places rhythmic stresses where they would not normally occur.

The tune and the band on this page are our own simple model, built to show one idea. Real players vary a great deal, and not all jazz swings: free jazz explored playing without regular meter or beat. Louis Armstrong (1901–1971) and Duke Ellington (1899–1974) are two of its famous figures. Ellington once said of the music, “It’s all music.”

Questions ·

What does “swing” do to a pair of eighth notes?

It lengthens the first note and shortens the second. The beat itself stays steady.

Is jazz improvisation random?

No. It is usually done over a chord progression, so it follows the harmony.

Does every jazz piece swing?

No. Free jazz explored playing without regular meter or beat.

Four things to try

Then try the two games below: tell straight from swung, and play along with the band.

Hear it straight

Each beat is split into two equal halves. The orange notes sit exactly on the dashed lines.

A gentle swing

A small step toward swing. In real playing the ratio is often much more subtle than a triplet.

The triplet feel

The first eighth note is twice as long as the second. This is how swing is often understood.

A wide swing

The upper end of the range that the sources give. The off-beat notes come very late.

Game ·

Straight or Swung?

Six questions. Each one plays our tune at one tempo. Choose whether the eighth notes are straight or swung. If you cannot hear the sound, press “What is in the music”.

Not one place, not one day不是一個地方、一個日子

Jazz is said to have originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But the Jazz article also says it did not begin as a single musical tradition in New Orleans or elsewhere. A single birthday for jazz is a convenient story, not a fact.

A Word ·

“Swing” twice

The word swing has two main uses in music. One is the technique we heard: lengthening and shortening the notes in each pair. The other is a style of jazz, “swing music”, that developed in the United States in the late 1920s and early 1930s and was dominant from 1935 to 1946. Taiwan’s dictionary describes 搖擺樂 as emphasizing the weak beats of the bar.

The Band ·

Who plays what誰彈什麼

The rhythm section, piano, bass, and drums, provides the underlying rhythm, harmony, and pulse. The core elements are usually the drum kit and bass. In a swing band, the classic rhythm section was a quartet of electric guitar, piano, double bass, and drums. As bebop evolved, smaller groups dropped the guitar.

  • Start with the volume low and turn it up a little at a time. The hi-hat is a bright, high sound, so it can feel sharper than it is loud.
  • With headphones, keep the volume at no more than 60% of maximum, and use personal audio devices for less than one hour a day, as the World Health Organization suggests.
  • At a live concert, stand away from the speakers, and give your ears a quiet break afterward.

Classroom Activity 1 ·

Straight, Then Swung

You need ·

  • A short, familiar rhyme or nursery song
  • Your hands for clapping

Steps · 步驟

  1. Clap a steady beat, four counts, and keep it going all the time.
  2. Say the rhyme with two equal syllables on each beat: “ti-ti, ti-ti”.
  3. Say it again, but make the first syllable longer and the second shorter: “long-short, long-short”. Do not change the clapping.
  4. Talk about it: what changed, and what stayed the same?

The beat stays the same; only the words move. If the clapping speeds up, start again.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

A Class Rhythm Section

You need ·

  • A desk or drum for the “bass drum”
  • Classroom percussion, such as a tambourine or blocks
  • One singer or player as the soloist

Steps · 步驟

  1. One group plays steady quarter notes, like a walking bass: one note on every beat.
  2. A second group plays only on beats 2 and 4.
  3. The soloist invents a short phrase over it, and the group answers: call and response.
  4. Swap roles and try again.

Let the soloist use only two or three notes at first. A small set of notes makes improvising easier.
