Start a pendulum metronome, change its speed, and count the strong and weak beats in twos, threes, and fours. Then tap along and see how close you land to the beat.
A beat is a steady pulse that cuts time into equal steps. Strong and weak beats come back in a repeating pattern, which groups them into bars of two, three, or four. The speed is counted in beats per minute.

Press Start and watch the rod. Every time it reaches one end, that is one beat, and you hear a click. The row of lights on top shows which beat of the bar you are on. The gold light is the strong beat. Drag the gold weight up for slower and down for faster, or use the slider. Choose two, three, or four beats in a bar and listen for the strong beat that keeps coming back.

The speed range is 40 to 180 beats per minute. At 180, there are three beats every second.
The clicks are made by your browser, with a different pitch for strong and weak beats. They are timed on the browser's audio clock, so the sound and the pendulum agree.
Reading ·
Think of a song you love and tap your foot along with it. Everyone in the room taps at the same speed, and nobody had to count. What you are tapping is the beat. A beat is the basic unit of time in music, the pulse, and it keeps going whether the melody has a long note or a short one.
Beats come one after another, each the same length, like the ticks of a clock. We say how fast the beats are with the word tempo, which is Italian for “time.” Tempo is measured in beats per minute, or BPM. At 60 BPM there is exactly one beat every second, like the second hand of a clock. At 120 BPM the beats are twice as fast. For comparison, the resting pulse of a person aged ten or older is 60 to 100 beats per minute, counted in the same unit.
But beats are not all the same. Some feel stronger and some weaker, and the pattern keeps coming back. A set of beats from one strong beat to the next is called a bar, or a measure. The first beat of the bar is the downbeat, and it is usually the strongest. The pattern of strong and weak beats is the meter.
The most common patterns are twos, threes, and fours. In two beats, the pattern is strong, weak, like a march step. In three beats, it is strong, weak, weak, and you count one-two-three. In four beats, it is strong, weak, medium, weak. Written music shows this with a time signature. In 3/4, the top number says there are three beats in each bar, and the bottom number says that a quarter note gets one beat.
Chinese traditional music has its own names for the same idea. The strongest beat is the 板 (bǎn), struck on a wooden clapper. The weaker beats are the 眼 (yǎn), marked with a drumstick. “One 板 and one 眼” means two beats in a bar, and “one 板 and three 眼” means four. In nanguan music, the beats are counted in 撩拍, with its own clapper called the 拍板.
A metronome keeps the beat for you. The mechanical kind has a rod that swings like a pendulum and a weight that slides up the rod to make it slower. A German inventor named Johann Maelzel patented one in 1815, after an earlier design by Dietrich Winkel. Beethoven was soon the first notable composer to write metronome numbers in his music. Even so, the old Italian words such as allegro and andante are only rough guides, and different books give them different numbers.

A Clapper ·
In traditional Chinese opera and music, the strongest beat of a bar is the 板, struck with a wooden clapper. The weaker beats are the 眼, marked with a drumstick. So “one 板 and three 眼” is a bar of four beats. The phrase also became an everyday saying for someone who does things by the book. In nanguan music, the beat is called 撩拍 instead, kept with a clapper made of several wooden pieces.
A Pendulum ·
A mechanical metronome uses an upside-down pendulum: a rod with a fixed weight at the bottom and a weight you can slide. Slide it up and the rod swings slower. Slide it down and it swings faster. Most are adjustable from about 40 to 208 beats per minute. Dietrich Winkel built a version in Amsterdam in 1814, and Johann Maelzel added a numbered scale and patented it in 1815.
A Number ·
Maelzel knew Beethoven, and Beethoven became the first notable composer to write specific metronome marks in his music. This was in December 1815, in the corrected score of his Cantata op. 112. Since then, a mark such as M.M. = 60, for Maelzel’s Metronome, has told a player exactly how fast to go: sixty beats per minute.
Some Words ·
Tempo is the Italian word for “time.” Well-known Italian speed words include allegro, which means “cheerful,” andante, “walking pace,” and presto, “quickly.” People often give each word a range of BPM numbers, but the books do not agree, and one reference calls the numbers “very rough approximations.” The speed words tell you a feeling and a rough speed, and a metronome mark tells you the exact one.
有名的義大利文速度詞包括 allegro(輕快、愉快)、andante(走路的速度)和 presto(很快)。

Myth vs. Fact ·
Beat and rhythm are exactly the same thing.
The beat is the steady pulse that you would tap your foot to. Rhythm is the pattern of long and short sounds that moves over it, and it can be much more complicated than the beat.
All beats have the same strength.
In most music some beats are stressed and some are unstressed. The pattern of strong and weak beats coming back again and again is what we call meter.
A faster song has more beats in each bar.
The number of beats in a bar and the speed are two different things. A song in three beats can be slow or fast. The top number of the time signature counts beats in a bar. The BPM counts beats in a minute.
The speed words are rough guides. Two common references give different ranges for allegro, and even the order of two of the words, largo and adagio, is the opposite of what it was in the Baroque period. Only a metronome mark gives an exact number.
