True Qi: When All the Named Kinds Combine
This course has named four kinds of qi separately. This lesson looks at what they're called once they've actually merged into one working whole.
這門課分別命名過四種氣。這一課要看的是,它們真正合併成一個運作整體之後,被叫做什麼。
Unit 79: True Qi: When All the Named Kinds Combine
An earlier lesson in this unit named four distinct kinds of qi — source, gathering, nutritive, and defensive — each with its own origin and job. Taken separately, this can make qi sound like four different substances working side by side rather than one coherent whole. Chinese medicine has a term for the combined, functioning result: "true qi," the actual qi circulating through a living body once source qi has been activated by gathering qi and distributed as nutritive and defensive qi together.
The distinction matters because the four named varieties are, in a strict sense, components and precursors rather than the finished product doing the day-to-day work. Source qi sits in reserve; gathering qi is freshly produced but not yet distributed; nutritive and defensive qi are already circulating, but describing them separately obscures that a living body experiences them as a single, integrated force rather than four separate streams running in parallel.
True qi is, in effect, this course's answer to a question a careful reader might have been holding since its first lesson: if qi is one concept with four sources and functions, what do you call it once it's actually working in a real, living person? The answer is that "true qi" was never a fifth, separate category — it's simply the name for the other four once they've stopped being distinguished from each other and are doing what qi actually does.
