Qi Commands Blood, Blood Mothers Qi
A classical pairing that splits the qi-blood relationship into two unequal jobs — one moves, the other carries.
一句經典的搭配,把氣血關係拆成兩個不對等的工作——一個負責推動,一個負責承載。
Unit 78: Qi Commands Blood, Blood Mothers Qi
An earlier unit lesson described qi and blood as interconnected substances the organs produce together, but Chinese medicine also describes a specific division of labor between them, summarized in a classical phrase: "qi commands blood, blood mothers qi." The first half describes qi's job: qi moves blood, holds it within its vessels, and can even convert into blood when needed — an active, directing role, the way a commander directs troops rather than marching in formation.
The second half describes the reverse dependency: blood provides the material substance qi needs in order to have anything to direct in the first place, the way a mother provides the body a child is born into. Without adequate blood, qi has nothing to move and nowhere to be held — which is why severe blood loss is traditionally expected to produce qi deficiency symptoms almost immediately, even though the blood loss itself is the more visible problem.
This asymmetry — command versus material support, rather than two equal partners — explains a clinical pattern that would otherwise look strange: treating a blood-deficiency complaint sometimes involves strengthening qi rather than directly replenishing blood, because qi is what will actually generate the new blood the body needs. Knowing which side of the pairing is truly "in charge" changes where a treatment starts, even when the visible symptom points to the other side.
