Sweat Is the Heart's Own Fluid
An earlier lesson warned that excessive sweating drains qi. This lesson explains why the drain specifically shows up as a strain on the heart.
稍早一課警告過度流汗會耗損氣。這一課解釋為什麼這個耗損特別會表現成對心的負擔。
Unit 80: Sweat Is the Heart's Own Fluid
This course's first unit warned that excessive sweating drains qi directly, without specifying which organ absorbs that particular cost. Chinese medicine answers that question with a specific pairing: "sweat is the heart's own fluid," meaning sweat is treated not as generic lost water, but as a fluid drawn specifically from the same pool the heart depends on, closely related to blood, which this course's organs unit already connected to the heart's governing of circulation.
This is why heavy, prolonged sweating is traditionally linked to heart-related symptoms rather than only general fatigue: palpitations, a racing or irregular heartbeat, and a specific kind of breathlessness that shows up alongside the sweating itself, not as a separate, unrelated complaint. A single sweaty afternoon rarely causes concern, but sweating that's excessive, spontaneous, or occurring during sleep is read as a signal specifically about the heart's fluid reserves, not simply about hydration in general.
This pairing is one more example of a pattern this course keeps returning to: a bodily fluid that looks generic from the outside — sweat is, after all, mostly water — is treated as belonging to a specific organ's own resources rather than as an undifferentiated substance the whole body shares equally. Reading sweat this way is what allows a symptom as ordinary as "sweating a lot" to become a specific clue pointing toward one organ rather than a vague sign of being unwell in general.
