Unit 70: Why Acupuncture Sometimes Uses a Point Far From the Pain
An earlier lesson in this unit explained why meridians make it possible for a point far from a symptom to affect that symptom, using the example of the Heart meridian and referred arm pain. This lesson looks at the specific principle that guides which distant point gets chosen, summarized in a classical phrase: treat the lower body for an upper-body problem, and the upper body for a lower-body problem.
The logic follows from this unit's lesson on the twelve meridians running the full length of a limb. A problem high on a meridian's path — near the organ it's connected to — can sometimes be more effectively addressed at a point low on the same meridian, near the hand or foot, where the channel is more accessible and, according to this framework, more responsive to adjustment. A headache linked to the Stomach meridian, for instance, might be addressed with a point near the foot rather than a point on the head itself, even though the pain is entirely in the head.
This principle is one more piece of evidence, alongside referred pain and the fifteen connecting channels covered elsewhere in this unit, that the meridian map behaves less like a straight line from cause to effect and more like a genuine network, where the most effective entry point is a separate question from where a problem is felt. Choosing the right distant point, rather than simply the nearest one, is exactly the kind of decision this unit has repeatedly said takes years of trained practice, not something to attempt from a reading passage.
