The Twelve Meridians Outside the Twelve Meridians: Sinew Channels
Alongside the twelve meridians that connect to organs, there's a parallel set that connects only to muscle, movement, and physical strain.
在連結到臟腑的十二正經之外,還有一套平行的系統,只連結到肌肉、動作,以及身體的勞損。
Unit 71: The Twelve Meridians Outside the Twelve Meridians: Sinew Channels
Every meridian covered so far in this unit has one thing in common: it connects, sooner or later, to an internal organ. Chinese medicine also describes a parallel system of twelve "sinew channels," following broadly similar paths along the limbs but connecting only to muscles, tendons, and joints — never reaching an internal organ at all. Where the main meridians are the system this unit has used to explain referred pain and organ-related symptoms, the sinew channels are the system behind purely physical strain: a pulled muscle, a stiff joint, a movement-based injury with no organ involvement whatsoever.
This distinction matters diagnostically because two complaints that sound similar — pain along the same general path on the leg, for instance — can belong to entirely different systems. Pain following the sinew channel tends to be sharply localized to the affected muscle or joint, worsens with a specific movement, and has an obvious mechanical trigger, like an injury or overuse. Pain following the main meridian is more likely to fluctuate with internal factors — mood, digestion, time of day — the very things this unit's earlier lessons connected to organ function.
Recognizing sinew channels as their own system prevents a common mistake: treating an ordinary muscle strain as though it were an organ-related pattern, or the reverse, missing an organ-related pattern by assuming a symptom is purely mechanical. The two systems run alongside each other on the body's surface, but they answer to different causes — which is precisely the kind of distinction this unit has treated as worth making explicit rather than left to guesswork.

This lesson explains a conceptual distinction, not a way to diagnose your own pain. Persistent muscle, joint, or organ-related symptoms should be evaluated by a licensed doctor.
