Unit 6: Yin and Yang Are Not "Good" and "Bad"
After qi, the next idea a student of Chinese medicine meets is yin and yang — and the most common misunderstanding arrives almost immediately. In popular culture, yin often gets treated as "bad" or "dark" and yang as "good" or "light," the way a villain and a hero get cast in a story. Chinese medicine uses the words very differently. Yin and yang describe a pair of complementary functions, not a moral judgment. Yin is associated with substance, rest, cooling, and the body's interior; yang is associated with function, activity, warming, and the body's exterior. Neither one is better than the other, in the same way that inhaling is not "better" than exhaling.
The two also cannot exist without each other. A body with no yin — no substance, no fluids, no rest — would have nothing for yang to warm or move. A body with no yang — no function, no activity, no warmth — would have substance sitting perfectly still, doing nothing. Health, in this framework, is not about maximizing yang and minimizing yin, or the reverse. It is about the two staying in a working relationship with each other, each doing its job without overtaking the other.
This is why a Chinese medicine practitioner almost never says a patient has "too much yin" or "too little yang" as a final verdict. Those words only mean something in relation to each other, at a particular moment, for a particular person. Learning yin-yang is really learning to stop asking "which one is winning" and start asking "are they still working together."
