How Qi Deficiency Splits Into Yang and Yin
Qi deficiency has a direction — and knowing which one changes what actually helps.

Unit 7: How Qi Deficiency Splits Into Yang and Yin
The first unit of this course ended with qi deficiency — a state where the body's basic functions are not being carried out with full force. Once yin and yang enter the picture, qi deficiency can be described more precisely, because it can lean in one of two directions. When the "warming" and "moving" side of qi runs low, the result is called yang deficiency: a person feels cold, especially in the hands and feet, moves slowly, and often prefers warm drinks and warm weather. When the "cooling" and "moistening" side runs low instead, the result is called yin deficiency: a person may feel warm in the afternoon or evening, have a dry mouth, and sleep restlessly despite feeling tired.
It helps to picture qi as a single team that yin and yang split between them. Yang qi handles warming and moving; yin qi handles moistening and calming. Plain qi deficiency is a general shortage of staff. Yang deficiency and yin deficiency describe which side of the team is short-staffed. A person can, in theory, have signs of both at once, which is simply qi deficiency that has not yet settled clearly into one direction.
None of this is something to self-diagnose from a reading passage. What matters here is the logic: Chinese medicine rarely stops at a single, flat label like "weak qi." It keeps asking a more specific question — weak in which direction — because the answer changes what actually helps.

Quick Check · 小測驗
1. According to the passage, what happens when the "warming and moving" side of qi runs low?
2. What does yin qi handle, according to the "team" comparison in the passage?
3. Why does the passage say Chinese medicine keeps asking "weak in which direction" instead of stopping at "weak qi"?
This lesson explains a distinction, not a self-test. Whether a set of symptoms points to yang deficiency, yin deficiency, or something else entirely is a judgment for a licensed doctor of Chinese medicine to make.
