Unit 5: Explaining Qi to a Friend
Suppose a friend who has never studied Chinese medicine asks, "What is qi?" A good answer follows a specific order, because getting the order right is what keeps the conversation from going in the wrong direction. Start here: "Qi isn't a substance you store — it's closer to the body doing its work. When we say someone's qi is weak, we're not saying a battery ran low; we're saying the body's functions aren't being carried out with full force."
Next, explain what those functions are: "In Chinese medicine, qi does five things: it moves things along, keeps you warm, defends you, holds things in place, and turns what you eat into something your body can use." Only after this should the conversation turn to measurement, because that question will come up regardless: "It's not a measurable quantity in the physics sense — it's a way of describing patterns of function. Asking how much qi there is is a bit like asking how much fitness someone has: real, observable in its effects, but not a substance sitting somewhere."
Finally, close with the boundary that matters most: "None of this replaces seeing a doctor. Qi is a framework for understanding how the body works as a whole — not a diagnosis, and not a substitute for one." Explaining qi well is not about finding a clever English word to replace it. It's about walking someone through the idea in an order that keeps them from getting stuck on the wrong question too early.

1. According to the passage, why should the question about measurement come after explaining the five functions, not before?
2. What is the purpose of ending the explanation with a note about seeing a doctor?
3. According to the passage, what is explaining qi well really about?
Explaining qi to a friend is a cultural and language exercise, not medical advice. If your friend has a real health concern, the answer is always to see a doctor — Chinese or Western.
跟朋友解釋「氣」是文化與語言的練習,不是醫療建議;朋友真的有健康疑慮,答案永遠是去看醫師,中醫西醫都可以。
