Excess Generating: When Support Becomes a Burden
The generating cycle usually fails by giving too little. Chinese medicine also describes what happens when a "parent" element gives too much.

Unit 64: Excess Generating: When Support Becomes a Burden
An earlier lesson in this unit described the generating cycle failing through shortage — a weak "parent" organ failing to adequately nourish its "child," so the weakness travels downstream. Chinese medicine also describes the opposite failure: a "parent" organ that is not weak but excessively strong, overwhelming the child it's supposed to be gently supporting rather than nourishing it in a measured way — support tipping over into a burden.
A concrete version shows up in the relationship between the liver (wood) and the heart (fire), where wood normally generates fire in a measured, supportive way. If the liver becomes excessively active — the same kind of prolonged, unresolved frustration discussed in an earlier unit — it can generate too much rather than too little, pushing an excess into the heart that shows up as symptoms of heart-fire: agitation, insomnia, a flushed face, and a racing, restless quality to the mind that looks like too much support rather than too little.
This matters because it means "the generating relationship is working" isn't automatically good news — the question is always whether it's working in a measured amount, not simply whether it's working at all. A doctor evaluating a heart-fire pattern needs to ask not just "is the heart getting support from the liver," but "is it getting the right amount," since in this pattern, the organ supposedly nourishing another is precisely the source of the problem, not the solution to it.

1. According to the passage, what is "excess generating"?
2. According to the passage, what symptoms does excess liver-to-heart generating produce?
3. According to the last paragraph, what question must a doctor ask about a generating relationship?
This lesson explains an advanced theoretical pattern, not a diagnosis. Symptoms like agitation or insomnia should be evaluated by a licensed doctor.
