Why Five, Not Four
Ancient Greece settled on four elements. Chinese medicine settled on five. The extra one is what makes the whole system close into a loop.
古希臘定下了四元素。中醫定下了五行。多出來的那一個,正是讓整套系統閉合成一個循環的關鍵。
Unit 63: Why Five, Not Four
A fair question, once earth, water, fire, and air sound familiar from other traditions, is why Chinese medicine insists on a fifth element rather than stopping at four. The answer isn't aesthetic — it's structural, and it comes down to what this course's earlier lessons on the generating and controlling cycles actually require to function. Both cycles depend on each element having exactly one "parent," one "child," one controller, and one element it controls, forming a complete, closed loop with no loose ends.
Four elements arranged in a cycle leave an awkward asymmetry: with an even number, opposite elements end up directly across from each other with no natural connecting step between them, and the neat one-directional flow the generating and controlling cycles depend on breaks down. Five elements, by contrast, form the smallest possible loop where every single element has a clean, single relationship to every other position in the cycle — one step to generate forward, one step to be controlled, and so on, with nothing left over and nothing doubled up.
The fifth element, earth, does more than complete the count — it's assigned to the center, matched to the transformation function of the spleen covered in an earlier unit, sitting at the pivot point the other four's movement passes through. Rather than four elements pointing outward in four directions with nothing holding the middle, earth gives the system a stable center that the other four rotate around — which is arguably the more important reason for "five" than simply needing one more item to complete a list.
