The Five Elements of a Lifetime
The same five-stage pattern that describes a single year — growth, expansion, transformation, gathering, storage — also describes a human life.
描述一整年的同一套五階段模式——生長、擴張、轉化、收斂、儲藏——也能拿來描述一個人的一生。
Unit 65: The Five Elements of a Lifetime
This course's seasonal unit already applied the five elements to a single year and a single day, and Chinese medicine extends the same five-stage pattern one scale further, to an entire human life. Childhood and youth are matched to wood, the stage of rapid growth this course has already associated with spring — the body building itself outward with more raw material than judgment. Young adulthood is matched to fire, the peak of outward activity and expansion, the stage of highest physical vigor and social engagement.
Middle age is matched to earth, the stage of transformation and centering — no longer purely building outward, but converting accumulated experience into stability, the same role earth plays at the center of the five-element cycle rather than at either extreme. Later adulthood is matched to metal, a stage of gathering in and refining down to what matters most, mirroring autumn's turn from expansion toward selectivity. Old age is matched to water, the stage of storage and stillness, drawing on a lifetime's accumulated reserves rather than generating new ones.
None of this is a rigid timetable — people move through these stages at different paces, and the point isn't to assign an exact age to each one. What the mapping offers is a way to expect a person's needs to shift in a specific, recognizable direction as they age, the same way this course has already used the five elements to expect a season's or a day's needs to shift — treating a stage of life not as a fixed category to diagnose, but as a direction a person is currently moving through.
