The Controlling Cycle
Wood controls earth, earth controls water — the safety mechanism that keeps each element in check.

Unit 13: The Controlling Cycle
Alongside the generating cycle, Chinese medicine describes a second relationship among the five elements: the controlling cycle, which keeps any one element from growing unchecked. Wood controls earth, the way tree roots break through and hold soil in place. Earth controls water, the way a riverbank contains a flood. Water controls fire, the way water extinguishes flame. Fire controls metal, the way heat melts and shapes metal. And metal controls wood, the way an axe cuts down a tree, closing this cycle as well.
Mapped onto the organs, this cycle explains why a problem in one place can create a problem somewhere else that looks, at first, unrelated. The liver (wood) is said to control the spleen (earth). When a person experiences prolonged frustration or anger — associated with the liver — that strain can, over time, show up as digestive trouble, the domain of the spleen. A patient describing "stress that upsets my stomach" is, in this framework, describing exactly this relationship, even without using its vocabulary.
The controlling cycle is a safety mechanism, not a punishment. Under normal conditions, each element checks the next one just enough to keep it from overreaching — the way a good editor checks a writer's excesses without silencing them. Illness, in this view, often isn't a single part malfunctioning in isolation. It's a checking relationship that has become too strong, too weak, or badly timed.
