The Generating Cycle
Wood feeds fire, fire feeds earth — a mother-child chain that explains why weakness can travel.
木生火、火生土——一條母子鏈,解釋虛弱為什麼會轉移到別的地方。
Unit 12: The Generating Cycle
Once the five elements are understood as five patterns rather than five materials, the next question is how they relate to each other — and Chinese medicine describes two main cycles. The first is the generating cycle, often described as a parent-child or mother-child relationship: each element feeds and supports the next one in a fixed sequence. Wood generates fire, the way dry wood feeds a flame. Fire generates earth, the way a fire's ash becomes soil. Earth generates metal, the way ore is formed and mined from the ground. Metal generates water, the way condensation forms on a cold metal surface. And water generates wood, the way water nourishes a growing tree, completing the circle back to where it started.
This cycle matters in Chinese medicine because organs are mapped onto the five elements, and the generating relationship describes how organs support one another under normal, healthy conditions. The kidney (water) is said to nourish the liver (wood); the liver nourishes the heart (fire); the heart nourishes the spleen (earth); the spleen nourishes the lung (metal); and the lung nourishes the kidney again, closing the loop. When one organ in this chain is running low, the "child" organ downstream may eventually run low too, simply from not being fed enough.
The generating cycle is not a claim that one organ literally manufactures another. It is a way of describing dependency: weakness in one place can show up, with a delay, somewhere else entirely — and a doctor familiar with this cycle knows to look upstream, at the "parent," rather than only treating the symptom where it finally appeared.

How are organs mapped onto the generating cycle, according to the passage?
According to the last paragraph, what does the generating cycle actually describe, and how does that change what a doctor looks for?

Quick Check · 小測驗
1. According to the passage, what comes after "fire" in the generating cycle?
2. According to the passage, which organ is said to nourish the liver in the generating cycle?
3. According to the passage, what does a doctor familiar with the generating cycle do differently?
This lesson explains a relationship between categories, not a treatment plan. Tracing a symptom back to its source is a judgment only a licensed doctor of Chinese medicine can make.
