Matching Organs to Elements
Why liver, gallbladder, and anger belong to the same category — and how that explains symptom clusters.
為什麼肝、膽、憤怒屬於同一個類別——這如何解釋一群看似不相關的症狀。
Unit 14: Matching Organs to Elements
Chinese medicine assigns each of the five elements to a pair of organs, and this mapping is what makes the five-element system practically useful rather than purely decorative. Wood is matched to the liver and gallbladder. Fire is matched to the heart and small intestine. Earth is matched to the spleen and stomach. Metal is matched to the lung and large intestine. Water is matched to the kidney and bladder. Each pairing also comes with an associated emotion, season, and sense organ — anger with the liver, joy with the heart, worry with the spleen, grief with the lung, and fear with the kidney.
This matching is not anatomical in the Western sense — the "liver" in this system is a wider functional category than the organ a surgeon would remove, and it includes functions modern anatomy assigns elsewhere. What the mapping is genuinely useful for is noticing clusters of symptoms that, on the surface, look unrelated. A person under prolonged frustration who also develops a bitter taste in the mouth, tension headaches, and irregular digestion is, in this framework, showing a cluster that traces back to one element — wood — rather than four separate, coincidental problems.
This is the real payoff of learning the five elements: not memorizing five categories for their own sake, but gaining a way to notice when several seemingly unrelated complaints are actually one pattern wearing different disguises. Chinese medicine calls this "treating the root rather than the branch" — and the five-element map is one of the main tools for finding the root in the first place.

1. According to the passage, which organ pair is matched to the "Fire" element?
2. Why does the passage say the "liver" in the five-element system is not the same as the anatomical liver?
3. According to the passage, what is the practical value of matching organs to elements?
This lesson explains a diagnostic framework, not a self-diagnosis tool. Noticing a cluster of symptoms is a reason to see a licensed doctor of Chinese medicine, who can trace it properly.
這是診斷框架的說明,不是自我診斷工具;注意到一群症狀,是去看合格中醫師、讓專業判斷追溯源頭的理由。
