The Breath as a Qi Exercise
Of all the ways to influence qi discussed in this course, breathing is the only one a person is already doing, all day, without being taught.
在這門課討論過的所有影響氣的方式裡,呼吸是唯一一個一個人整天都在做、卻不需要被教就會的。
Unit 59: The Breath as a Qi Exercise
This course has described qi through diet, sleep, emotion, and the seasons, but Chinese medicine also treats the breath itself as a direct point of access to qi, called "regulating the breath." The logic follows from an earlier lesson in this unit: gathering qi collects in the chest from what's breathed in, and lung qi is meant to descend smoothly as part of normal function. Breathing isn't just something the lung happens to do — in this framework, it's one of the most direct, moment-to-moment demonstrations of qi's movement available to observe.
The traditional practice built on this idea favors slow, deep, abdominal breathing over shallow, rapid breathing confined to the upper chest — sometimes described as letting the breath "sink to the lower abdomen." This isn't a claim that air itself travels down into the belly; it's a description of using the diaphragm fully, which draws the breath deeper and gives gathering qi more room to collect and settle, rather than staying shallow and agitated near the top of the chest.
What makes regulated breathing worth a lesson of its own, rather than a footnote to lung function, is that it's the one qi-related practice a person can do consciously, on purpose, in the middle of an ordinary day, without waiting for food, sleep, or a change of season. Every other lesson in this course describes qi as something shaped by circumstances outside immediate control; the breath is the one lever available right now, in real time, to whoever is reading this sentence.
