Rebellious Qi: When Direction Is the Problem
Some organs' qi is supposed to move only one way. When it reverses, the symptoms are exactly what you'd expect from something running backward.
有些臟腑的氣本來就該只往一個方向走。一旦反過來,症狀正好就是你會從一個逆向運作的東西身上預期看到的樣子。
Unit 58: Rebellious Qi: When Direction Is the Problem
Several organs covered earlier in this course have qi that is expected to move in one specific direction as part of normal function: stomach qi is supposed to descend, pushing digested food onward; lung qi is supposed to descend as well, spreading fluids downward through the body. "Rebellious qi" describes what happens when qi that should be moving in that expected direction reverses and moves the opposite way instead — and the resulting symptoms read almost like a direct description of something running backward.
Rebellious stomach qi, moving upward instead of down, is traditionally linked to nausea, belching, hiccups, and in more severe cases, vomiting — all of them, notably, involving something moving up and out of the body rather than continuing down and through it. Rebellious lung qi, similarly failing to descend, is linked to coughing and wheezing, both of which involve air being forced back up rather than settling into a calm, downward breath.
What makes this pattern useful, rather than just a colorful label, is that it gives a doctor a specific direction to correct rather than a vague target to chase. Qi deficiency calls for replenishing, qi stagnation calls for freeing movement, qi sinking calls for lifting back up — and rebellious qi calls specifically for redirecting qi back the way it was supposed to go, which is a different task from any of the other three, even though all four ultimately trace back to the same single concept introduced in this course's very first lesson.
