The Body's Surface Zones: Where Meridians Reach the Skin
This unit has covered meridians, their branches, and their connecting channels. This lesson covers the outermost layer of all: the skin itself.
這個單元講過經絡、它的分支,還有它的連接通道。這一課要講的是最外層的那一層:皮膚本身。
Unit 111: The Body's Surface Zones: Where Meridians Reach the Skin
This unit's lessons on the twelve main meridians, the fifteen connecting channels, and the twelve sinew channels each described a progressively more surface-level layer of the meridian system, moving from deep pathway to muscle. The twelve cutaneous regions describe the final and most superficial layer of all: twelve zones of skin, each corresponding to one of the twelve main meridians, functioning as that meridian's outermost surface reach.
Because they sit at the very surface, the cutaneous regions are traditionally treated as the meridian system's first line of contact with the outside world — the layer an external pathogen, such as cold or wind, meets first, before it has any chance of moving into the sinew channels, then the connecting channels, and finally the main meridians themselves. A pathogen caught and repelled at this outermost layer, under this framework, never gets the chance to become the deeper problem an earlier lesson on hidden pathogens described lying dormant until a later season.
This layered structure — cutaneous region, sinew channel, connecting channel, main meridian, each one progressively deeper — gives the whole meridian system something this unit hasn't made explicit until now: a traditional model of how an external problem is expected to progress, layer by layer, if it isn't stopped early, mirroring the surface-to-core progression this course's four-layer fever model describes for warm disease specifically. Reading the skin itself as an active zone of the meridian system, rather than as a separate, purely cosmetic surface, is what makes catching a problem at this earliest and most superficial layer worth taking seriously.
