Why Some Meridians Are More Active at Certain Hours
This course's seasonal unit described an organ clock across the day. This lesson looks at the meridian-specific theory that clock is built on.

Unit 92: Why Some Meridians Are More Active at Certain Hours
This course's seasonal-wellness unit described a two-hour cycle in which qi and blood are said to flow more strongly through a different organ across the day. This lesson names the underlying theory more precisely: "ebb-flow of the child and midday hours," which maps that same cycle directly onto the twelve main meridians introduced earlier in this unit, assigning each meridian its own two-hour window of peak activity, in a fixed sequence that repeats every day.
The theory doesn't just describe when a meridian is busiest; it's traditionally applied as a timing principle for treatment, on the reasoning that working with a meridian during its own peak window makes a technique more effective than working against a meridian at a time when its qi is traditionally considered to be at its lowest. A point on the lung meridian, for instance, is traditionally considered most responsive in the early morning hours when lung qi is said to peak, and comparatively less responsive twelve hours later.
This is one more instance of a principle this course has returned to repeatedly since its section on seasonal wellness: Chinese medicine treats time itself as a variable worth tracking, not a neutral backdrop indifferent to what's happening in the body. Applying that same logic down to the level of individual meridians and specific two-hour windows is what this theory adds — reading not just which organ is active in a given season, but which meridian is most active in a given hour.

1. According to the passage, what does this theory map the organ-clock cycle onto?
2. According to the passage, why might treatment be timed to a meridian's peak window?
3. According to the last paragraph, what broader principle does this theory extend?
This lesson explains a conceptual timing theory, not a treatment schedule to follow on your own. Any specific treatment timing should be determined by a licensed doctor.
