Which End of a Meridian Is the "Root"?
An earlier lesson explained why acupuncture sometimes treats a point far from the pain. This lesson explains the theory behind picking which far point.
稍早一課解釋過為什麼針灸有時候會治療一個離疼痛很遠的穴位。這一課要講的是,挑選是哪一個遠端穴位背後的理論。
Unit 112: Which End of a Meridian Is the "Root"?
An earlier lesson in this unit explained why a point far from the pain is sometimes chosen over a point right at the site of the problem. That lesson didn't specify how a practitioner decides which distant point to pick among many candidates along the same meridian. "Root and branch, origin and knot" is the theory that answers that more specific question, describing each of the twelve main meridians as having a "root" near the limbs, where the meridian's qi is considered most concentrated and easiest to influence, and a "branch" or "knot" near the head or torso, where that same qi is considered most spread out and expressed.
The root, typically located at or near the fingers and toes, is traditionally treated as the more powerful and more responsive location for adjusting a meridian's qi precisely because it's concentrated there rather than dispersed. The branch, located closer to the meridian's associated organ or the head, is where problems most often show up as visible symptoms, but is traditionally considered a harder location to influence directly, since qi arriving there is already spread thin across a wider area.
This is the specific mechanism behind the general principle covered in the earlier lesson on distal point selection: a point is chosen far from the pain not simply because tradition says so, but because the root end of the relevant meridian is traditionally considered the more effective place to influence qi that will, following the meridian's own pathway, eventually reach and affect the branch end where the symptom is actually showing up.

2. According to the passage, why is the root end easier to influence than the branch end?
3. According to the last paragraph, what does this theory explain about distal point selection?
This lesson explains a conceptual theory behind acupuncture point selection, not instructions for performing it. Acupuncture should only be performed by a licensed practitioner.
