The Sensation of "De Qi"
Acupuncture points were covered earlier in this unit. This lesson explains the specific sensation practitioners traditionally look for once a needle is in place.
穴位在這個單元稍早已經講過了。這一課解釋的是,一旦針放好之後,執業者傳統上會找的那種特定感覺。
Unit 90: The Sensation of "De Qi"
An earlier lesson in this unit explained what acupuncture points actually are — locations along the meridian system rather than arbitrary marks on skin. This lesson covers what's traditionally supposed to happen once a needle reaches one: a specific sensation called "de qi," literally "obtaining qi," described as a distinct heaviness, soreness, numbness, or spreading feeling around the needle, different from the sharper, more localized sensation of the skin simply being pierced.
This sensation is traditionally treated as a marker of a technique working correctly, not an incidental side effect to tolerate. A needle placed correctly at a point but failing to produce de qi was traditionally read as not yet having reached, or properly engaged, the qi traveling through that particular meridian — prompting an adjustment in the needle's angle or depth rather than simply proceeding regardless. In this sense, de qi functions as a kind of real-time feedback the practitioner and patient are both meant to notice together.
The sensation connects directly back to a concept from this course's first unit: qi as something that moves and can be directed, not a passive background presence. De qi is, in effect, a moment where an abstract concept introduced early in this course becomes something a person can actually feel happening, a distinct spreading or heavy sensation traveling along a line rather than staying confined to the exact point of contact — which is also why the sensation is traditionally described as confirming that the meridian itself, not just the local tissue, has been reached.
