The Kidney as the Root of Both Yin and Yang

Every organ in this course has its own yin and yang, but one organ is treated as the root system every other organ's yin and yang ultimately draws from.

Unit 66: The Kidney as the Root of Both Yin and Yang

This course's organs unit described the kidney as storing a person's inherited constitutional strength, and its yin-yang unit described every part of the body as having its own local balance of yin and yang. Chinese medicine connects these two ideas directly: the kidney is said to house kidney-yin and kidney-yang specifically, and these two are treated as the root supply that every other organ's own yin and yang ultimately draws from, the way a single water table beneath the ground feeds every well drawing from it.

This is why kidney-yin and kidney-yang deficiencies show up with an unusually wide reach compared to a weakness in most other organs. Kidney-yin deficiency, since it's the deepest reservoir of yin in the body, can show up as the deficient heat pattern covered earlier in this course, but originating from the root rather than staying local. Kidney-yang deficiency, as the deepest reservoir of yang, can show up as the yang deficiency pattern covered in the same lesson, again reaching wider than a single organ's cold.

This is also why prenatal qi, discussed in this course's first unit, and kidney-yin and kidney-yang are treated as different angles on the same underlying resource rather than three separate topics: the fixed inheritance from birth is stored specifically as this root balance of yin and yang, which is part of why depleting it is taken more seriously than depleting a more replaceable, locally generated resource elsewhere in the body.
