Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids: The Organs' Raw Materials
The organs in this unit don't just have functions — they produce and manage three substances that make everything else possible.
這個單元裡的臟腑不只有功能——它們還生產並管理三種讓一切得以運作的物質。
Unit 44: Qi, Blood, and Body Fluids: The Organs' Raw Materials
This unit has described what each organ does, but not yet what, specifically, the organs are working with. Chinese medicine names three core substances that the organs produce, circulate, and depend on: qi, already covered in detail in the first unit of this course; blood, which nourishes and moistens the body as it circulates, produced through the combined work of the spleen's transformation and the heart's governing of circulation; and body fluids, a broader category covering everything from saliva and sweat to the fluid that keeps joints moving.
These three aren't independent of each other — they're produced from the same raw materials and constantly convert into and support one another. Qi is said to move blood, the way a pump moves water; blood is said to be the material foundation that qi needs to move through. Body fluids and blood share such a close relationship that heavy blood loss is traditionally expected to affect fluid levels, and severe fluid loss, in turn, is expected to affect blood.
Thinking of qi, blood, and fluids as one interconnected system, rather than three separate topics, explains why a single cause — say, a struggling spleen, discussed earlier in this unit — can ripple outward into fatigue (a qi problem), a pale complexion (a blood problem), and dry skin (a fluid problem) all at once. The organs aren't just doing separate jobs in this unit; they're collaborating on producing and managing this same shared set of three raw materials.

1. According to the passage, what are the three core substances Chinese medicine names as products the organs manage?
2. According to the passage, what happens to fluid levels after heavy blood loss, according to Chinese medicine?
3. According to the last paragraph, why might fatigue, pale complexion, and dry skin all appear together from a single cause?
This lesson explains a framework connecting qi, blood, and fluids, not a diagnosis. Symptoms like fatigue, pale complexion, or dry skin should be evaluated by a licensed doctor.
