Why the Spleen Is Called "Later Heaven's Root"
If the kidney is the fixed inheritance from before birth, the spleen and stomach are the daily factory that keeps everything running afterward.
如果腎是出生前那份固定的遺產,脾胃就是出生之後,讓一切持續運作的每日工廠。
Unit 67: Why the Spleen Is Called "Later Heaven's Root"
This course's first unit distinguished prenatal qi, the fixed inheritance stored in the kidney, from postnatal qi, generated continuously from food and air. Chinese medicine gives the spleen and stomach a title that makes their role in this second category explicit: "the root of what comes after heaven" — heaven, in this phrase, meaning birth itself, and "after" meaning everything a person's body has to keep manufacturing on its own from that point onward.
The title isn't just honorific. Every other organ's qi, blood, and fluids, all covered in this course's organs unit, ultimately depend on raw material the spleen and stomach convert from food — meaning a struggling spleen doesn't just cause a locally digestive problem, but can eventually show up as a shortage anywhere else in the body, the same wide reach this unit's lesson on the kidney described for prenatal qi, but running through a completely different, renewable channel.
This is why a doctor faced with a wide-ranging pattern of weakness — affecting several organs at once rather than one — is trained to check two roots rather than one: whether the problem traces back to a limited, fixed prenatal inheritance, or to an ongoing, correctable postnatal shortfall in what the spleen and stomach are managing to produce. The two roots explain most of what the rest of this organs unit has already covered, just from their source rather than their symptoms.
