The Five Sounds: Diagnosing by Voice

An earlier lesson matched faces to elements. This lesson does the same with something you can pick up without even looking: the voice.
稍早一課把臉對應到五行。這一課用一個不用看就能察覺的東西,做同樣的事:聲音。

Unit 84: The Five Sounds: Diagnosing by Voice

An earlier lesson in this unit matched facial features and complexion to the five elements as a way of reading the body without opening it up. Chinese medicine extends the same logic to something that doesn't require looking at the person at all: the voice. Each organ is associated with a characteristic tone of speech — the liver with a shouting quality, the heart with a laughing quality, the spleen with a singing quality, the lung with a weeping quality, and the kidney with a groaning quality — collectively called the "five sounds."

這個單元稍早的一課,把臉部特徵與氣色對應到五行,作為一種不用打開身體就能讀懂身體的方式。中醫把同一個邏輯,延伸到一個完全不需要看著這個人的東西上:聲音。每個臟腑都對應到一種特徵性的說話音調——肝對應呼(喊叫的性質)、心對應笑(笑的性質)、脾對應歌(唱歌的性質)、肺對應哭(哭泣的性質)、腎對應呻(呻吟的性質)——合稱「五聲」。

This isn't a claim that healthy people literally shout or weep when they talk; it's a description of an underlying tonal quality — pace, pitch, and forcefulness — that a trained ear was traditionally expected to notice long before a symptom became visible elsewhere. A voice that has taken on an unusually forceful, shouting edge, for instance, was read as a sign worth paying attention to for the liver specifically, the same way a flushed complexion was read as a sign worth paying attention to for the heart in the earlier lesson on faces.

這不是在說健康的人講話時真的會用喊的或用哭的;這是在描述一種底層的音調特質——節奏、音高、力道——一個訓練有素的耳朵,傳統上被期待能在症狀在其他地方變得明顯之前,就先注意到。舉例來說,一個變得異常有力、帶著喊叫邊緣的聲音,會被讀成一個特別值得留意肝的訊號,就像稍早講臉的那一課裡,泛紅的氣色會被讀成一個特別值得留意心的訊號一樣。

The five sounds is one more entry in a pattern this course keeps returning to: the five-element system was built to make full use of every observable channel — face, voice, season, flavor, emotion — rather than relying on a single kind of evidence. Reading a voice this way turns an everyday, easily dismissed feature of how someone talks into one more thread in a much larger web of correspondences, each one reinforcing or questioning what the others suggest.

五聲是這門課一直回頭提到的一個模式的又一個例子:五行系統被建構出來,是要充分利用每一種可觀察的管道——臉、聲音、季節、味道、情緒——而不是只依賴單一種證據。用這個角度來讀聲音,把一個日常、很容易被忽略的說話特徵,變成一張更大的對應關係網絡裡的又一條線索,每一條都跟其他線索互相印證或互相質疑。

Questions · 閱讀理解

According to the passage, what are the five sounds, and which organ is each one associated with?

Shouting (liver), laughing (heart), singing (spleen), weeping (lung), and groaning (kidney) — a characteristic tone of speech associated with each organ.

According to the passage, what is the five sounds actually describing, rather than claiming?

Not that healthy people literally shout or weep, but an underlying tonal quality — pace, pitch, and forcefulness — that a trained ear was expected to notice.

According to the last paragraph, what pattern does the five sounds exemplify?

That the five-element system was built to use every observable channel — face, voice, season, flavor, emotion — rather than relying on a single kind of evidence.

Quick Check · 小測驗

1. According to the passage, which organ is associated with a shouting quality of voice?

2. According to the passage, what does the five sounds theory actually claim?

3. According to the last paragraph, what pattern does the five sounds exemplify?

This lesson explains a conceptual framework, not a diagnosis. Changes in voice or speech should be evaluated by a licensed doctor.
這是概念框架的說明,不是診斷;聲音或說話的變化,應該由合格醫師評估。
