Qi Transformation: Turning Food and Air Into the Body's Own Substances
Earlier lessons described where qi comes from. This lesson covers the process that actually does the converting.
稍早的課程描述過氣從哪裡來。這一課要講的是真正負責轉換的那個過程。
Unit 100: Qi Transformation: Turning Food and Air Into the Body's Own Substances
An earlier lesson in this unit distinguished source qi, fixed at birth, from acquired qi, generated daily from food and air. That lesson named the raw materials and the organs that gather them, but left out the actual process that turns raw material into something the body can use. Chinese medicine names that process "qi transformation": the conversion of food, water, and air into qi, blood, and body fluids, and the reverse conversion of used-up qi, blood, and fluids back into waste to be expelled.
Qi transformation isn't credited to any single organ, but treated as a task shared across the digestive and respiratory organs working together in sequence — the stomach breaking food down, the spleen extracting usable essence from it, the lung combining that essence with air, and the kidney supplying the underlying heat that powers each of these conversions. A failure at any single step in this sequence is traditionally read as a failure of qi transformation specifically, distinct from a simple shortage of raw material going in.
This distinction matters clinically because it separates two problems that can look identical from the outside: a person eating enough food but still showing signs of qi deficiency may not have a supply problem at all, but a conversion problem — food going in without being properly transformed into usable qi. Recognizing which of the two is happening changes where support needs to go: toward providing more raw material, or toward strengthening the conversion process itself.
