The Four Directions Qi Moves In
Earlier lessons described qi sinking and qi rebelling as specific malfunctions. This lesson introduces the larger framework both malfunctions belong to.
稍早的課程把氣陷跟氣逆描述成兩種特定的故障。這一課要介紹的是這兩種故障共同屬於的那個更大框架。
Unit 99: The Four Directions Qi Moves In
Earlier lessons in this unit described qi sinking, where qi fails to hold things in their proper place, and rebellious qi, where qi moves in the wrong direction entirely. Both are specific breakdowns of a more general concept Chinese medicine calls "qi mechanism": the idea that healthy qi is always doing one of four things — ascending, descending, exiting, or entering — and that health depends on these four movements happening in the right balance and at the right time, not on qi simply being present in sufficient quantity.
Each of the four movements has an organ most associated with directing it: the spleen is credited with the ascending movement, lifting nutrients upward; the stomach and lung with the descending movement, sending waste and turbid substances downward; the lung, again, with the exiting movement, distributing qi outward to the body's surface with each breath; and the kidney with the entering movement, drawing qi inward and downward to be anchored in reserve. A qi mechanism working correctly keeps all four moving in coordination, each one making room for the others.
Read through this framework, qi sinking and rebellious qi aren't two unrelated problems — they're both cases of one of the four movements failing at its job: qi sinking is a failure of the ascending movement, and rebellious qi, most often, is a failure of the descending movement being overridden by an upward surge. This is also why this unit's advice has so often mentioned specific directions — lifting, descending, venting, storing — rather than simply telling a reader to "have more qi": in this framework, direction is at least as important as quantity.
