Qi Sinking: When the Lift Fails
Qi deficiency has a specific, downward-pulling version — when the function that's supposed to hold things up simply gives out.
氣虛有一個特定、向下拉扯的版本——當本該把東西撐住的功能徹底放棄的時候。
Unit 57: Qi Sinking: When the Lift Fails
An earlier unit lesson described qi's five functions, one of which was containment — holding blood in its vessels, holding organs in their place, holding fluids from leaking out for no reason. Qi sinking describes what happens when this specific function fails severely enough that things that should stay up or stay in start, quite literally, to sink or slip: a persistent dragging or heavy sensation in the lower abdomen, a tendency toward frequent, urgent urination, or in pronounced cases, an organ prolapsing lower than its normal position.
This is best understood as a directional worsening of ordinary qi deficiency, rather than a completely separate problem — the same underlying shortage, but concentrated enough in the "holding up" function that gravity starts to win. It's traditionally linked most closely to the spleen, since the spleen's qi is specifically credited with keeping organs and tissues lifted in their proper place, on top of its more commonly cited role in digestion covered in an earlier unit.
The classic response follows directly from the mechanism: rather than treating this as a local, mechanical problem to be pushed back into place, the approach is to restore the spleen qi that was supposed to be doing the lifting in the first place — the same rest-and-replenish logic used for ordinary qi deficiency, just aimed specifically at the function that gave out. Recognizing "sinking" as its own named pattern, rather than lumping it in with general fatigue, is what lets a doctor connect a seemingly unrelated symptom like frequent urination back to the same qi framework this whole course has been built on.

This lesson explains a named pattern, not a diagnosis. Symptoms like organ prolapse or urinary urgency should be evaluated promptly by a licensed doctor.
