Qi Deficiency and Qi Stagnation Are Not the Same Thing
One is running low on qi. The other has enough qi, just stuck in place. Both can feel like exhaustion, for completely different reasons.
一個是氣不夠用。另一個是氣夠,只是卡住不動。兩者都可能感覺像疲憊,卻是完全不同的原因。
Unit 56: Qi Deficiency and Qi Stagnation Are Not the Same Thing
This course's first unit described qi deficiency in detail: a general shortage, where the body's functions aren't being carried out with full force. Chinese medicine also describes a second, easily confused problem with the opposite mechanism: qi stagnation, where the overall amount of qi may be perfectly adequate, but its movement has become blocked in a specific place, the way a traffic jam isn't a shortage of cars but a failure of cars to keep moving.
The two can produce a surprisingly similar complaint — a person might describe both as "tired" or "not right" — but the details point in different directions. Qi deficiency tends to produce a dull, constant fatigue that worsens with exertion and improves with rest; the person often speaks softly and prefers to sit still. Qi stagnation tends to produce a distending, moving discomfort — often in the chest or abdomen — that comes and goes with mood, worsens with sitting still, and can actually improve somewhat with movement or a long sigh, since sighing is traditionally read as the body's own attempt to force stuck qi to move.
The distinction changes the entire response. Qi deficiency calls for rest and gentle replenishment — pushing a depleted system harder only depletes it further. Qi stagnation calls for movement and release — resting a stuck system only lets it stay stuck longer. Mistaking one for the other, by resting when movement was needed or pushing through activity when depletion was the real issue, is a common and unhelpful error, which is exactly why telling them apart is treated as a first, essential step rather than an afterthought.

1. According to the passage, what is qi stagnation, using the traffic comparison?
2. According to the passage, what tends to improve qi stagnation's discomfort?
3. According to the last paragraph, what happens if qi deficiency is mistaken for qi stagnation, or vice versa?
This lesson explains a diagnostic distinction, not a way to self-treat. Telling qi deficiency from qi stagnation requires a licensed practitioner's examination, not just a feeling of tiredness.
這是診斷區分的說明,不是自我治療的方法;分辨氣虛與氣滯需要合格醫師的診察,不能只靠疲憊的感覺自行判斷。
