When One Organ's Problem Hides Behind Another's Symptom
The generating cycle from the five-elements unit isn't just a diagram — it's a map for tracing a symptom back to an organ that isn't showing any symptoms at all.
五行單元裡的相生循環不只是一張圖表——它是一張地圖,能把一個症狀追溯回一個完全沒有顯現任何症狀的臟腑。
Unit 68: When One Organ's Problem Hides Behind Another's Symptom
This course's five-elements unit described the generating cycle as a mother-child relationship between elements, and its organs unit assigned each element a specific pair of organs. Put together, they describe something Chinese medicine calls "mother and child conditions affecting each other" — disease traveling along the generating cycle from one organ to its neighbor, in either direction, rather than staying confined to wherever it started.
A disease can move "from mother to child," the pattern already covered in this course's five-elements unit: a weak kidney (water) failing to nourish the liver (wood), so liver-type symptoms appear even though the kidney is the organ actually running low. It can also move the other way, "from child to mother": a liver under sustained strain drawing so heavily on the kidney's support that kidney-type symptoms — lower back weakness, for instance — begin to appear as a secondary effect of a problem that started in the liver.
What makes this worth its own lesson, rather than being folded into the earlier generating-cycle lesson, is the diagnostic habit it trains: a symptom's location is not automatically where the underlying problem is located. A doctor who sees kidney-type symptoms doesn't stop at the kidney — the five-element map gives a short, specific list of neighboring organs worth checking first, turning what could be a wide-open guessing game into a small number of well-reasoned possibilities.

1. According to the passage, what does "mother and child conditions affecting each other" describe?
2. According to the passage, what happens in the "from child to mother" direction, using the liver-kidney example?
3. According to the last paragraph, what does this pattern train a doctor to do?
This lesson explains a diagnostic pattern, not a way to self-diagnose. Tracing a symptom to its source organ is a judgment for a licensed doctor of Chinese medicine.
